At 19:11 A very cool thing happens, and I think it's totally worth shining a spotlight on as an example of great play. We have this very common situation. The players all have characters who are consummate bad asses but for one reason or another (in this case it was social status) an NPC is looking down on them and treating them as lesser. John didn't lay it on too thick, but Iramina clearly though of herself as better than the scoundrels. And so many times I've seen this particular interaction trigger a result where the players need their PC to prove the NPC is wrong, a jerk, less, etc. It's a status game and the player is determined to walk away with high status, thus starting some kind of conflict. But in this case, what Aldo did was brilliant, because he didn't try to insult or awe Iramina, instead he tried to find a common ground to connect with her. Yes, he did want to show her that he had educated tastes, but it wasn't to insult her. He praised her and gave her an opening to praise him. And yes, she was awkward about it too, because he caught her off guard, but she had no reason to walk away thinking Aldo was a jerk, or someone who was trying to jump up to her status, just someone who appreciated some of the same things she did. I think this is a fantastic example of a player finding a way to connect with an NPC rather than a way to humiliate, manipulate, or otherwise control them. Three cheers to @Ezekiel_III
Aldo is already one of my favorite characters in this game. The "cultured brute" is kinda cliche'd in some ways, but I honestly can't name that many times I've come across a character like it, and for some reason the accent Zeke's using, for some reason, just ties the character together all the better.
I've been trying to come up with a system ...or which system would work for a Sunless Sea roleplaying setting/campaign ... The SkyFarer/Seafarer rules are ok but a bit Mary Poppins steam punk instead of the TERROR that really makes the Sunless Sea video game, in particular super fun. The very 1st thing that came to mind upon getting Blades in the Dark was this is PERFECT. The system works great with stress, it's abstract mechanics work with the quirky story elements in the Zea, and the Leviathan Hunter hack is perfect for a Ship-centered crew. Maybe they set out from Duskwall and end up in at Kingeater's Castle. ;)

thank you. These timestamps help not just to keep track of where I left off from an entertainment angle, but also are a good reference for me as I prepare to run the game for the first time. So yeah thanks a lot.
I'm very happy that Geoff finally gets love for a character. I've noticed so often that people hate or dislike his characters like Vincent or Mr.Sicarian (though I'm not saying everyone does) but I'm glad people like his new characters like Janus and Carriless
I think he used to get shit because most of the time, his characters just want to kill people. Geoff would be quite happy murder hobo-ing his way around the world, not that that's bad. You can see with the blue fever stuff, Geoff made a character, not just a vehicle for murder. I feel the same way about this guy. Though I'm not a fan of Janus.
I remember playing a one shot of Shadowrun where we ended up spending a lot of time planning and then went "Wait the evening is nearly over, let's do the run real quick." I love the way Blades fixes that problem. It was only natural for a Shadowrun hack to be built based on the Blades rules.
digitalsignalx Maybe Art? he seems to be super into artwork. To the point of being in an art Gallery he probably shouldn't be in, but still just getting lost in the details of the pieces.
Cariless's vice is religion. I think a vice is just something you consider an obsessive indulgence to the point of carelessness. use of drugs to get high but addicted, use of gambling for thrill but addicted, use of religion as relief but brutally maiming others, art for its beauty, value & detail but gets into a lot of trouble being a non noble in high society galleries.
Oh yeah i totally get what john is saying about board room meetings. Saw several DnD groups like that which spent more time making these complex plans rather than actually doing anything. On everything. Really ruins the flow of the game, and it's even worse when your character is on the timid side because you can't really just go headfirst into the problem and force them to actually play the game.
totally agree especially about the timid part. Im seriously not the guy that hangs shit on the DM but the DM is the one with the power to fix those groups. If the DM 'springs' things on the group without warning its super detrimental to the players confidence. I always use traps as an example.. worst thing is you go to open a door and 'suprise' its trapped! No signal no warning and the DM says 'well you didnt check haha' what happens then is the team degenerates into 'I take a movement, I check for traps' & repeat. Players need to remember the DM isnt trying to kill them, if they wanted to they could. DMs need to remember unless they just want board meetings discussing every possibility or just want to play doungens & shopping they have to accept players mistakes and roll with it not punish the (too) hard so they become timid
My Star Wars homebrew game is like that! I am playing close attention to how Blades does this so my next edition of the homebrew system can squash the planning, 'cause nobody plans anything in Star Wars.
enternamehere2222 Ya a campaign I joined had that problem so when I joined I played a devious manipulative neutral evil in a neutral - good party and put together a truly Machiavellian plan to use them to regain my throne.
So I'm loving the cast, ruleset, theme.....but has anyone else noticed how the rolls looks in the Roll20 window during the dice rolls?!?!?! Man, this only Part 2 of the 1st Ep....but damn this is getting good.
Cast and gameplay are awesome. I just found BitD recently while I was looking for something to replace D&D; can't wait to give it a try. The only thing I could wish for is better art in the book. Now the art in this video is just gorgeous (example at 40:00). Seriously, I will buy another copy of the game at an increased price if you use this artist's work.
Well I was hesitant about a new GM/DM it took me a while to get used to Adam. (( not that he was bad, people just have to grow on me.)) I avoided watching all the new shows until now. I must say - I love him already! =)
Criminals and low class locals typically call the city Duskwall. Skovlanders would know it as Do'skov'ol (translated to: the Skov's coal mine) Nobles, the wealthy, and high-class Imperials would know it as North Hook, its imperial designation. But they can all be used interchangeably. There wouldn't be many in the city who haven't heard of at least two out of three of the names.
Not really, she's just not taken her chance yet. She'll have plenty more as this goes on (at least I'm hoping), and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when she does step up and go, "Yo, let me handle this."
As someone who only knows Anne from her different appearances on Rollplay shows I don't know if this is her personally, but I always thought her characters were more on the quiet side and more often than not wait to be engaged with / only speak when spoken to. Then again, this is only the first Episode.
It's episode one. The DM even said that this is the way episode one is going to go before the players take over as director. Does that follow in future episodes?
man harper is expositing very slowly and not really getting the game going quickly. also loads of uhing and ahing. So far not really impressed by this. granted im only 12 minutes in so far

I loved that whole scene! Amazing roleplay
Well said, and what a great scene this early in a new series. This is looking so good.
Aldo is already one of my favorite characters in this game. I cannot help imagining Duskwall as an island on the Sunless Sea. Which makes me really wanna find it there.

People loved Mr. Sicarian and how Geoff played him.
People loved Sic, though.
Spec Parson the Third I thought was a great character of his
night4345 yeah I know, but I saw quite a bit of backlash for him as well
I think he used to get shit because most of the time, his characters just want to kill people. Geoff would be quite happy murder hobo-ing his way around the world, not that that's bad. I'm 9 minutes in and i have to say. This world , the characters and the structure of this game is awesome.
I'm so damn intrigued right now:)
Enter a name here I'm getting a very Dishonored vibe...I like.
Nick V one of the sources of inspiration is dishonord
Oh the Kinclaith family... we love them so much.
ROAHTE!!!!
Feels like roth, from night angel trilogy
I wonder if we will see Captain What's her face.
Every time I hear the name as "can cleave" x)
Hunting for gigantic underwater demons in a pitch-black botomless sea sounds like the worst time imaginable..
I love that the whole boardroom thing happened so much in Mirrorshades that it was no longer shadowrun and relationships happened
More geoff more geoff MORE GEOFF MORE GEOFF. And the others too. Everyone is awesome
I fucking love Zeke's character so far.
Same, but did they mention what his vice was yet?
digitalsignalx Maybe Art? he seems to be super into artwork. To the point of being in an art Gallery he probably shouldn't be in, but still just getting lost in the details of the pieces.
Possibly, however a vice is typically immoral like gambling and drug use with the other two.
Actually, Luxury is a vice as well in Blades in the Dark
Getting super Dishonored vibes from this game xD
Methinks each kind of plan needs a clever thief/conman jargon associated with it like the "Lost In Translation" scene in Oceans Twelve, for example.
Wheats Irish accent has got better since swan song
"Tale as old as Time, Beauty and the Beast" Aldo and the Noblewoman
Oh yeah i totally get what john is saying about board room meetings. Saw several DnD groups like that which spent more time making these complex plans rather than actually doing anything. Once more Geoff will have my favorite character
So I'm loving the cast, ruleset, theme.....but has anyone else noticed how the rolls looks in the Roll20 window during the dice rolls?!?!?!
Man, this only Part 2 of the 1st Ep....but damn this is getting good.
how does he get all their webcams in the video and have the extra windows when they go to roll?
Aldo is so good xD
The lair looks like the library from the movie League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
I love that movie
Cast and gameplay are awesome. I just found BitD recently while I was looking for something to replace D&D; can't wait to give it a try. The only thing I could wish for is better art in the book. I mean he made the game
Blades in the Dark seems like a mix of Thief and Dishonored.
I know I'm late. But hot damn, I think I found an ezikal character I like. Reminds me so much of Tom hardy
favorite rpg plan charge with 176 goats
Mercilessly dragging Adam Koebel!
Blades is so freaking cool! ❤
Ezekiel's charecter is so awsome lol
This sounds like a really interesting ruleset. Ive seen the early access version on drivethrurpg, does it have a formal release date?
Evil Hat is publishing it, slated for 2017 Q2. You can find more updates on the Project Status page here: www.evilhat.com/home/project-status/
Thanks, much appreciated.
IF this goes well, I think it will go REALLY well. One thing only, I hope zeke gets a better microphone :P
Is there a place to find all of the screenshots for the different districts?
This is so awesome
If Aldo has to become a butler at some point, I'm just done.
heh Is that Laphroaig I see behind John?
here come mine weat. what up!!
Is it Duskwall or Doskvol?
Fuck's Doskvol?
Ranziel1 There's a campaign called Never Sunny in Duskvol on Eric Vulgaris' channel so I wasn't sure what the town was called.
It's both. Doskvol is the old Skovlander name for it.
Criminals and low class locals typically call the city Duskwall.
Skovlanders would know it as Do'skov'ol (translated to: the Skov's coal mine)
Nobles, the wealthy, and high-class Imperials would know it as North Hook, its imperial designation.
But they can all be used interchangeably. There wouldn't be many in the city who haven't heard of at least two out of three of the names.
abyone else feel like they hasnt given rune a chance for character development so far?
Not really, she's just not taken her chance yet. She'll have plenty more as this goes on (at least I'm hoping), and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens when she does step up and go, "Yo, let me handle this."
it's only the first session give it time.
As someone who only knows Anne from her different appearances on Rollplay shows I don't know if this is her personally, but I always thought her characters were more on the quiet side and more often than not wait to be engaged with / only speak when spoken to. Then again, this is only the first Episode.
what time period is this supposed to be set?
Mcface vaguely Victorian. so like mid 19th century
I think it would be more accurate to reference dishonored than any style or period in earth history.
I'd look for relations of the target, eg take his daughter hostage to get his consent to the duel
Hey Wheat I love you man, but not all RP characters have fake scottish accents.
Carl Bernroth no. Not all of them. Just the best ones
First... Cause I Can
5:12 so shamelessly Dishonored?
Dracologist The ruleset specifically lists Dishonored as a major inspiration, so hardly shamelessly.
it does?
imagine that.
tried to watch this again, and the uhm and uh counter is trough the roof, almost every sentence is punctuated with a uh or a uhm
Wow it's almost like he talks like a fucking normal human.
You are spending too much time telling stories to players. They are here to play for gods sake
It's episode one. The DM even said that this is the way episode one is going to go before the players take over as director. Does that follow in future episodes?
yeah, its the first session, this is the time for world building
man harper is expositing very slowly and not really getting the game going quickly. also loads of uhing and ahing. So far not really impressed by this. granted im only 12 minutes in so far
