They could have just made the window smaller to reduce plastic by only showing the figure and not the extra pieces for example the arms they can hide them behind cardboard like the extra faceplates with the same cardboard holders from inside the windowless box.

If they really cared they’d make every character with joints in the arms & legs, it would cut down on plastics as you wouldn’t need to keep making all these extra arms & legs. And Nendo’s with joints in the arms & legs are sooooo much better, they don’t fall to pieces every time I dust them, and much easier to display.

There is an authenticity sticker on the new box from what it looks like. My concern is more about the damage done to the figure in such a flimsy packaging that the figure is going to slide around in. So more paint transfers and damaged figures upon delivery are more than likely going to increase.

  • @BerryMontBlanc
    @BerryMontBlanc วันที่ผ่านมา +8

Oh lord that's even worse than I expected 💀
Any scrap of benefit of the doubt that it was for "the environment" vanished upon seeing the bubblewrap and styrofoam, which weren't even necessary before and CANNOT be recycled.
As already mentioned, most collectors/buyers don't toss the box to begin with; the original packaging wasn't also just helpful for resale if you no longer want it, but also those clamshells were fantastic at preventing damage. I've seen some intense box damages in my 15 years of collecting, including a scale figure that was impaled by a forklift (yes, really- that was certainly a fun surprise)- and the figures themselves always still came out unscathed. I've had to move with my collection several times and even long distance- always fine. 100% Team Clam Shell here, lmao. Seeing how much those parts will scrape and bounce around makes me SO nervous. And if the box won't properly protect the figure, what's even the point? Isn't that just more wasteful? ffs, just make the front window a bit smaller and remove the ones on the sides.
As for the bases- personally, I really dislike the easel ones, since they can be difficult to balance and make some poses impossible. The default base is pretty bleh, but at least easy enough to ignore since it's clear, I guess. I find usually I don't need all the extra holes aside from maybe one if there's any floating pieces (Animal Crossing Isabelle's music notes) or mascot characters (Kero from CCS) or something; but an easy solution there is the Nendoroid Petite bases, which they often include in cases like that anyway. If they're concerned about the environment- having an extra base as a pre-order bonus is just MORE plastic (the base itself and the packaging it comes in). Realistically you won't even use both, so that seems way more wasteful to me than the box that serves a significant function??
And I'm not even going to touch on how tacky and cheap it looks because that's preaching to the choir here, but that unboxing looked so sad and frustrating. I really hope they walk this back. =_=
Thank you for the in-depth packaging comparison!! 🙏

Probably. The one example I can point to is HASBRO. For maybe a couple years they attempted to do “plastic-free” packaging.
However, less people bought those and it forced them to go back to having some in plastic to (I believe) going back to all plastic. (After laying off a bunch of people)
So, depending on sales (and I mean global sales) they could come back. However, you have to take into consideration that the Japanese market may or may not have issue. On one side, in Japan a lot of figures already come in plastic-free packaging. On the other side, Japan is also the biggest users of single use plastic.

I didn’t realize the change would appear this quickly omg. I’m highly skeptical of this change largely being for environmental reasons too. It stinks of greenwashing. I’m both a figure collector and super into environmentalism so I was super interested in the news of this change. Some of the most environmentally friendly things about figure collecting is something people don’t even really realize most often, the circularity of anime figures. The secondhand market is really strong within anime collecting community and to remove the clear window discourages secondhand sales (people are not easily able to see what they’re getting + reduced ease of bootleg detection). This encourages people to buy new (which can be difficult depending on the availability of the figure) which goes against the environment (extracting new material, manufacturing, shipment, etc.) when collectors could have bought secondhand. Not to mention the new packaging seems like it won’t protect the figure as well. Putting that many resources into producing a product to then not properly take care of it because of the lack of proper packaging (which is likely far less resource demanding than the product itself) sounds counter intuitive. Can’t say I’ll stop buying Nendoroids all together if they strongly enforce this new packaging into future releases, but I definitely feel less inclined to buy overall. Thanks for showing the new box!

Edit: I’m glad you mentioned that this is being done in part to increase preorder sales, this is probably in conjunction with changes like GSC US’s no preorder cancellation policy and their heightened shipping fees to make sure they can squeeze as much money directly from consumers as possible. The only reason for less plastic is that plastic has become more expensive. A while ago they changed from saying PVC/ABS to "plastics", meaning a mixture of anything that fit in said vague category. They reduced the packaging plastic because it got too expensive and along with the yen having such low value still, it hit their profit too hard. It's just money. If they really wanted to help the enviroment they could have donated part of their profit from their figures to some organization.

I think the biggest concern is this. The price would still be the same high price...shoot, if they made the prices more affordable with this change. I'll axcept this change lol.
But my biggest concern is this, if they are changing all figure boxes down the line: ones that once had the old (better) look, ones being restocked. My goodness, so many fricken people are gonna inflate the prices of figures with old box designs now...
Edit: Another rant, this type of packaging is more prone to have broken pieces when people get them now; since there isn't much protection for them. This isn't like Hasbro figures, where its more durable plastic and less paint. Made for generally kids, either way their packaging is the same bad taste... These are collector's items. I swear, bits of hair or accessories are gonna be delivered broken or chipped...

with how much plastic they had to insert to pad the nendos, I doubt they're even really saving all that much plastic compared to before. And the type they're using now is the type that's 100% going to be thrown away, because it's just packaging and nothing else, versus the old blisters which doubled as displays and storage, and that I'm fairly certain most people kept. *And* the packaging is still worse in actually protecting the figures, with all the ways the figs can move inside of the box and with how unsecure they are. Literally the only benefit of this is that this is probably way cheaper materials wise for the company; the box is easier to assemble since its solid and cardboard, the clamshell prolly cost _something_ in comparison to this method of placing in some plastic separators, wrapping the figure, then tossing it into a cardboard box (assumedly all done by hand), the stand is a smaller amount of flimsier plastic...and not only are they seemingly keeping prices the same for this junk, but they even put an item whose preorder ended before the packaging change announcement in it...
Biiiiiiiig yikes. Something's prolly changed at the company, and in a really bad way.

I don't mind the idea of package reduction but the lack of places to safely put the spare parts upsets me as I keep each part in its spot in the clam shell because it's the safest spot. I even keep the plastic rap and the tape because I'm scared of damage. I don't know how to protect the parts now. The outer box I don't mind but the inner box I hate. I don't like the new stand I prefer the old one. I wouldn't mind the change if they gave you a plastic box for the accessories that is designed for them and intended to be kept.

Jesus, that's prize figure status packaging. If they came in boxes that plain I wouldn't bother saving them. Its nice to save the boxes if you want to resell it at some point or just because they look nice and can be reused to repackage your figure if your moving out but these new ones suck.
Also don't trust that it will make it cheaper for the consumer. They will use this an an excuse to cut costs and maybe reduce the price ever so slightly but inflation will bring that right back up. So you'll pay the same for inferior packaging.

Man, now it looks like a cheap ichiban kuji figure. I'm not into nendoroids, but I can't deny how hypnotizing it was on shelf, that I wanna buy one if I saw it in stores. Those now-old boxes are really appealing, even if I don't really like the concept as a whole. I do get your "conspiracy theory" there. This is definitely just a public stunt, they don't really care. I personally used to buy Gundams, and they now used some more "eco-friendly" material. But said eco-friendly material is so brittle and easily break, you're bound to buy replacement if you're a casual builder that can't modify and fix it yourself. If they want to be actually eco-friendly, should've get rid off the runners and plastic wrap, and just used the same plastic they used to since it's less likely for people to buy duplicates to replace broken ones. Do what Lego did and have the parts already separated and inside a paper bag. But no, they need to sell dem modelling tools for more money, which they do. And intentionally making some parts color inaccurate so that you'll buy paint, which are in non-refill bottles, adding more waste. The new plastic is easier to cut without tools, but that doesn't mean it's clean and requires no sanding. Those nubs are still there, and nubs could prevent parts from snapping properly. Guess you need some tools still, teehee. Plus, now they're implementing a building technique called "Fine Build System", that meant to make building model kits easier, but the engineering caused it to be brittle. Adding the new brittle plastic, you're guaranteed to break it if moving and partswaping it too much. Oh yeah, they also incentivized partswaps, since they made a line of basically blank figures with high customizability via sold-separately parts...inside a plastic bag and still on runners, more waste yay. If you partswap it too much it'll break or at least being loose. The type of joints they used are the unfixable type (c-clips joint), so you're going to need to buy a completely new one to replace it. It is considerably cheap, which could incentivized people to not mind rebuying it. Yeah...not sure if they're being genuine about eco-friendly thing. But alas, companies being companies

See I exclusively pre-order for the most part now but there are some I ordered to display in their box... I also sometimes pre-order one to display in its box and another to open and display. This announcement came way after I made some pre-orders so... what..? Are they going to waive their cancelation policy..? This feels like a bait and switch to me, I would love to cancel the pre-orders I placed multiples of because whats the point now.. you can't see them. They should have made the announcement and listed NEW releases that would have this change. Not ones with existing orders already placed..
Also, how am I going to see if there are any major defects on the figure without opening it now? Previously if a part was missing or there was major paint issues you could see it in the window. Now if I keep them sealed I could be screwing myself because how do I know there isn't a major defect or missing parts. GSC has been pretty kind with their defect warranty.. but are they going to honor that in 4 years if I decide to wait until then to open the box? I doubt they would have stock then and complain saying I should have just opened it.
EDIT: I agree that the bonus item wasn't available on the US site when I pre-ordered Taiga but checking back now it shows in my order.... so they must have retroactively changed it. Guess we will see if it comes with it as it is shipping in the next two weeks.

Hasbro even start to sell less of their figs when they changed the boxes they start comming with worse QC and you cant see if the figure had problems, so i can easily see the nendos starting to come with bad QC or damaged on shipping
Plus.. we are the target audience, we buy the figs and never throw the boxes, we are more eco friendly that their factories 😂, if they start changing other figs boxes like figmas or even their scales GS is going down...

I can see the intention of the box design of being universal packaging rather than making a unique plastic cover to hold the nendoroid and parts together as that cost money to uniquely design and manufacturer to which I am guessing it's no longer sustainable. I really think there is room for improvement such as the box containing the figure made out of clear plastic with a universal design which can be seen from outside of the box

The new boxes are wasteful in their own way. What really sucks is how many people would pay the price hike to keep the better packaging, but Goodsmile likely saves a TON of money this way on top of keeping prices low. I'd even accept if they did the pre-order BS for exclusive bases (as much as I hate that), but changing the packaging is wild. So many people display in-box or keep the boxes. It just feels like the type of box a sketchy counterfeit would use.

New to your channel and I appreciate you walking through this fairly objectively. Saw this video under the YT recommendations since I started dabbling in collecting nendroids and some figures as an offshoot of collecting and building Gunpla and some Bandai metal build figures. As one who understands the deterioration of polycaps and posability, having these shipped in a way that could have already worn out the ability for the figure to hold certain poses is disheartening. It is interesting that Good Smile are just now they are removing plastic when so many Marvel, Transformers, and other US toys had removed plastic and the visibility for some time and finally have gone back to using plastic or open air for viewing the figure in the packaging. As far as making it a premium product (comparing to P-Bandai) they have a long way to go. But a figure that cannot be displayed in box, and even to validate the figure is there, pls it makes repackaging very difficult and flimsy... all that to say, It makes me not want to invest more in a Schrodinger's nendroid and more in the mecha. I get it cut costs, but will it cut consumer interest?

The same reason apple removed the wall adapter from the iPhone box
Make the box smaller so more product fits into the shipping box
Even just shipping them direct to customers the box is still small so cheaper shipping
Cheaper packaging cuz now there's no clear plastic that needs to be molded specifically to the figure
Everything was done to save a few bucks or pennies even for profit without lowering the price of course because the idea is to make more money without lowering the price to the consumer hahaha 🥴

Doesn’t goodsmile also make the popup figures? I don’t have a figure from that line but every time I see a figure in person, the plastic packaging looks wayyy more unnecessarily larger compared to the actual figure. And it’s all plastic. If they really are being environmentally conscious (which I doubt) they should have considered that line first.
For me, the original nendoroid packaging gives it a premium feel that sort of justifies how costly they are. Some of my figures I leave in the box bc I like the packaging design 😅
