This time we pay a quick visit to an abandoned & long disused reservoir near Buxton in Derbyshire.
Stanley Moor was never a success, and had leakage issues from the start. Join us as we take a look from above and below.

Very nice piece. As a resident of Buxton I fished fished at Stanley Moor throughout the 1970's and 1980's . 'Buxton Flyfishers' rented the water from Severn Trent Water. We ran a fly fishing club of around 50 members and stocked the water twice annually with Brown and rainbow trout. I lived two or three minuites from the water and went there most evenings to fish. I rememeber the line freezing onto my fishing rod whilst fishing in March in blizzard's! Great memories of bygone days. I have a couple of photos of the Reservoir when it was in service and full of water (and fish!) if anyone is interested.
Omg, went to boarding school in Buxton and used to swim in Stanley Moor resevoir and jump from the tower the 1970's . Swam in 'forty foot' pool just above the resevior (even in the winter)!. Remember being there during 1976 heatwave!! Can't believe its disappeared!!
When I was a kid in the 60s this was a trout fishery and it was where my grandad taught me to fly fish. I spent many happy hours fishing there. I'm sad to see it is now drained and redundant. The angling club used to stock it with 12 ounce trout but I once caught a 1.5 pounder which was a beast for a water with little natural food. Grandad used to smoke the fish we caught on his Abu smoker.
Hi. yes I remember walking round this many years ago, as the High Peak Railway nearby is one of my great interests. I suppose you know that there is another abandoned reservoir close to the place where the former C & HPR crossed the A54 Macclesfield road, on a iron bridge, hard by Ladmanlow, which was a former depot of the railway? Not only that, but I recall locating the outfall (and source of the river which flows through Burbage,) of the underground canal which once entered the hillside near the old coke ovens, still visible from the present A54 and the former old Macclesfield coaching road. This was known as the Duke's level and served many of the Buxton coal mines on the moorland above with small boats bringing out the coal. The High Peak railway had a sidings here to load coal from the mines.The portal of this canal tunnel disappeared many years ago but was located close to the old coke ovens.

Morning Bob, found this by chance when we did Solomon's Temple the same day. At the time not knowing it was the Cromford and High Peak Railway until last week so I'll need to go back 🙂 Hope you and the family are well 🙂

The Peak District is beautiful, and this lost reservoir is one of many a distant memory. Even though it's not still thriving, it's a wonderful place to visit. Love the drone footage in this video. You take care and stay safe Ant, GWR

I always heard some common localy held tale that some woman disapproved of it being built and cursed it, so it never filled up

Whilst being stuck at home mostly on my days off, I'm spending a lot of time looking for place to visit. M & GN is Norfolk isn't it? Norfolk is on the agenda, I visited Cromer Tunnel in November but I didn't Light it that well so need to go back
Interesting, it looks a little weak where it breached, not enough backfill maybe when it became full to capacity...Looked nice and calm again for the drone flight.

The reservoir was breached and became disused maybe 30 years ago. When I was at school in the 80's we used to go along that bypass culvert (it was ungated) and slide down the flume on plastic bags !

That was a very interesting video with all the history that went with it. Did you manage to explore the Cromford/High Peak railway line whilst up there? On a technical note, it has been interesting to see your presentation skills 'to camera' develop since your humble beginnings. I've been with you near enough from the start and you continue to get better and better, nice one!!
Morning Jim, hope you are all well 🙂 Funny thing is I had no Idea on the day that it was the old railway it's only last week when I edited it together I discovered it indeed was. I Just assumed it was an access road
Looking into it further there was a station and a short Tunnel nearby. We did this the same day as Solomon's Temple, the opening shot was taken whilst stood there, and the image at the end you can just make out the temple on the hill. I'll be back to look at this railway later in the year and see what is walkable. Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for being here as always 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration I just knew you would be the first one to like my Guards lamp post and photo. I bought it years ago in a sale and actually thought we'd lost it in one of our house moves, so I was really chuffed to find it this morning, glad you liked it.
I did I saw that Pop up and I remember when I fished one out years ago in the river Erewash at Toton when I was about 13 and took it on the bus. My mum made my dad take it back and leave it by our local line as I wasn't allowed it 😂

just looked on the National museum of Scotland OS maps and noticed that the Burbage reservoir has been destroyed. The outfall of the tunnel is somewhere near the place called "The Level" just below the HPR and is really a scource of the River Wye.Don't know if the outfall is still visible.

I wonder what those streams would of been like when we had those back to back storms and flooding, I think you would need more than an infaltable ring on that shoot.

That's how I discovered it whilst droning around above the temple. The opening drone shot is taken from above the temple, the very ending shot you can see the temple on the hill 😀

In a country that has earthquakes it would make me wonder if the reservoir could not these days be lined with a heavy membrane seal, I,m not an engineer but it would seem in this world today of high water useage this world be a good back up

Is it all up upon that hilly hinterland, (Harpur Hill), twixt Buxton/Macclesfield , near the High Peak Raceway, old RAF camp location ¿?

The reservoir was definitely still in water in the early 1990s (and still is according to the OS map!) - do you know when it was closed?
I tried so hard to uncover information on this place, it's like it never existed! I went through records, databases, websites. Very little on it. Thanks for watching :)
I remember it with water too, I wonder if it was breached around the same time lightwood reservoir was also breached?
I was deliberately breached as it was leaking
