- This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier, released in 2014 and directed by Anthony Russo. Oh my gosh, what a plot twist! And what an incredible movie! Steve, Nat, and Sam make an excellent trio and the Winter Soldier is my favourite "villain" so far in the franchise. Nick Fury is also excellent, as always. This movie is one of my top five MCU movies, if not top 3. It is that good. That you spotted Bucky before the big reveal makes you unique of all the reators I've ever seen cover this movie. Of course, us fanboys and long time readers of Marvel Comics knew long before we ever saw the trailer. But for a civilian? Unheard of!! 😋
Thanks Mike! I've responded to a few other comments about the Bucky reveal, but I recognized Sebastian Stan's whole face, I could see the details even in the shadows. Maybe a setting on my PC monitor allowing the shadows to look a bit different for me, I'm not sure.
One of my favourite things about the Fury Car Attack scene is that the bad guys did not underestimate Fury; they brought tonnes of people and tonnes of equipment. It wasn't really enough! But I like a competent enemy. It solidifies the stakes and tension.
Truth. I was also really happy Nick got his own action scene in one of these movies!

I hope that in the future, they'd make a show about Nick Fury in his young age 'till he became the Director Fury.
I think it's really cool how they gave Nick Fury a really long, cool action scene where mid-60s Samuel L Jackson can spend most of it sitting down.

@@kaiielle That's alright, it was a very quick cut so it's understandable. A lot of reactors also missed it so you have no worries there. You probably missed it because you were either checking the camera or talking over it.
This is the MCU at its pinnacle. Taking itself, the characters and story serious, but still infusing humor at the appropriate moments. Love how this is such a big love letter to spy movies and conspiracy thrillers. Casting Robert Redford was no coincidence, as he starred in "All the President's Men" in the 70s, "Three Days of the Condor" and also "Spy Game" with Brad Pitt in the early 2000s. This also took quite a bit from the James Bond movies and the Mission Impossible series.
Hope you might get to those series as well some time in the far future, haha.
Steve and Nat are the most unexpected and yet amazing duo we didn’t know we needed!
In the comics, Steve, Nat, and Wolverine team up on a mission. Wouldn't that be awesome to see Evans, Johansson, and Jackman in a film together.
The sequence were Nat reveals herself as a "board member"...the older actress is Jenny Agutter. She was in a 70's sci fi film called Logun's Run.
It was great to see her again.
I thought she looked familiar thanks for bringing that to my attention.
She was also in An American Werewolf in London. 🙂
This movie was what really sold me onto Chris Evan as Steve Rogers. Even after two movies I wasn’t convinced of him in the role but this movie really show cases what Steve is all about. His loyalty to people and to principles even when the world is telling him he is wrong for thinking and acting that way.
The movie works as the morally gray plot aspects of the movie challenge Steve’s black and white mentality. Things are more murky now SHIELD the ‘good guys’ was actually Hydra in disguise the institution he served unconditionally was secretly the enemy.
And the Winter Soldier who was just supposed to be another Hydra enemy Steve would have stopped is actually revealed to be his best friend. Yeah Bucky had a version of the serum injected with him that made him physically equal to Steve but it had limits as he lost his arm. In the end rather than fight Bucky Steve stood in his faith that his friend was the good man he knew him to be even when everyone was telling him he should kill Bucky. Steve stood in support and in the end his friend remembered.
The introduction of Sam was another staple of the movie he actually treated Steve as a fellow soldier rather than the living legend the rest of the world sees him as. While the other Avengers are more like co workers to him Sam bonded with Steve both from personal experience and helped him take his first steps to forging a life outside of battle. Sam is the first real friend Steve has made in the present day.

The Steve and Nat scenes are definitely part of the reason this is my favourite. I love them both so much and I love their friendship.
🙈 You're probably the second person that I've watched to see that it was Bucky sitting with Pierce. Good catch. Glad you're avoiding spoilers. This had the best action scenes of all Marvel movies. Definitely in top five of franchise.
I love Sam. He, from the first interaction, only wanted to help a fellow vet. He does not want anything from Captain America. He wants to help Steve Rogers. I wish Sam had been Navy. He'd be a great shipmate.
Kevin Smith said it best when he said that he knew the geeks won when Robert Radford appeared in a Captain America movie and died saying the words "Hail Hydra"

The reason this is so many people's number one marvel movie is because it's not a superhero movie. Its pretty much a Tom Clancy spy thriller, but with a couple of superheroes in it. The stakes feel real, the tension of our heroes being hunted by some unknown opponent is palpable, and the real enemy is entirely a mystery for pretty much 3/4 of the movie until Zola tells us about HYDRA.
Evans and Johansson had done a film called The Perfect Score (2004) where high school students steal test answers to get into college. So there'd been good chemistry for awhile.
They were also a romantic pair in The Nanny Diaries (2007). She plays the nanny in the movie and he plays the role of "Harvard Hottie", a character who lives in the same building as the family she's working for as a nanny.
One of my favorite moments is when Fury says "you need to keep both eyes open" Pierce gives a very subtle eye roll like "jesus, that was so corny. Can't believe you actually said that".
This was the movie that made Captain America my favorite Avenger. And I really do like how much Captain America is the opposite of Iron Man on a character level.
Iron Man starts out without a moral "compass"/convictions and needs to develop it through what he experiences. He has to grow into a hero and we really relate to him through his struggles. We love him because of how much he's changed
Captain America was always a hero, even before the serum. The reason they made him into what he is is because he's just a good person. That is an insanely difficult type of character to write, the guy who's just a good guy, the Boy Scout if you will. It's the same problem a lot of Superman stories fall into. What do you do with a character that is morally perfect? Well this movie answered it. You change the world around him. Captain America is a good person, so his values at their core never actually change. But now, the world has gone topsy turvy and he has to try and fight to hold onto those values. We admire him because of how steadfast he is.
The villain that Cap fought on the ship in the beginning is from the comics: Batroc the Leaper, a master of savate (French kickboxing). Agent Brock Rumlow also ends up becoming a comic villain named Crossbones who has a grudge against Cap.
The title of the film and Bucky's new title are a reference to Thomas Paine's speech from Dec. 23rd, 1776: "THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value."
The summer soldier is one who will only pay lip service to their ideals when things get hard, but in contrast, the winter soldier is the one who will fight for what he believes no matter the hardship; Even though Bucky is "The Winter Soldier", Cap is the real winter soldier for standing up for what he believes even when the whole world is against him, and for believing in Bucky even though everyone else has declared him a lost cause.
Also, the quote on Fury's headstone in the cemetery is from the film Pulp Fiction, which is quoted in full by Sam Jackson's character in that.
Seeing Peggy with dementia and forgetting that she knew Steve was alive was so heartbreaking for me, it hits home because my grandma had dementia before she passed and those times when she was lucid were rare and precious.
This is my favorite MCU film. Not only is it a great Marvel movie but it’s downright great movie.
I love this movie so much! It's definitely one of the top MCU movies in my opinion, Bucky is one of my favorite characters.

The directors of this movie, Joe and Anthony Russo, started out in comedy. They made some movies -- a debut future back in 1997 that I've honestly never even heard of, an indie movie called Welcome to Collinwood, and then a mid-budget semi-flop called You, Me, and Dupree. They were far more successful as TV directors, helming numerous episodes of "Arrested Development," "Happy Endings," and most importantly, "Community," on which they were also executive producers. It was this last job that ultimately got them into meetings with Marvel and led to them directing this movie. As a tribute to that, several "Community" cast members pop up in their Marvel entries, starting here with Danny Pudi, who played Abed Nadir on that show and has a little appearance here as the SHIELD technician who opens the door to discover Cap, Falcon, and Maria Hill near the end of the film.
Also, speaking of the Russos, Joe has a little cameo here as the doctor attending to Nick Fury in isolation. He credited himself not by his name but "Gozie Agbo," which eventually became the name of their production company.
When Cap opens his little book listing contemporary culture he needs to try so he can write down Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," there were multiple versions shot for different territories to tailor some of the references for local audiences.
I forget if it says anywhere in the film (I didn't see re-watching it yesterday), but Lieutenant Dan himself, Gary Sinise, is the voice of the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian. A pretty fitting choice.
I also thought it was fun for them to have brought back Garry Shandling as Senator Stern, last seen interrogating Tony Stark at the beginning of Iron Man 2.
Based on your review and Letterboxd, I'm guessing you have no frame of reference for Robert Redford, who played Alexander Pierce. It's possible that Redford is the most famous older actor who's appeared in a Marvel film to date (which is not a comment on the quality of actors in past or future Marvel movies, but on Redford's stardom, plus I could be forgetting someone. In any case, he's up there with Anthony Hopkins, but I'd say that Redford's stardom stretches back farther). His casting was a tip of the hat to the sorts of 1970s political thrillers this movie was trying to at least gesture toward, with Redford having starred in a particularly famous one called Three Days of the Condor. That one's not among my favorites -- I'd be more inclined to go with The Conversation or The Parallax View -- but it's a cool genre and it was fun to see him in this. Redford is also very famous for his team-ups with Paul Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting.

Yes, Redford has a long and impressive history in film. If you've got an interest in older (60's and 70's) movies, he's an actor worth seeking out. And I would love to watch your impression of films of that era. 🦸

This movie changed the personality of the MCU - the Russo brothers were a GREAT addition.
I find this movie to be very sleek.
I think a big reason that this movie resonates with so many people is that it was the first superhero movie that just came out and said, "don't trust government, and don't trust anything you see or read". This movie had twist (zolov speech) after twist (bucky reveal) after twist (fury not dead). Bucky and Cap's fight scenes were top notch, very few cuts, and the choreography was awesome too. We also saw a somewhat human side of Natasha in this one, what Nat is like when she's not being a spy. 10/10
For me it's about the idea of control. under present world circumstances with everything digital they can practically pull this in real world that's made this movie all time favourite for me in MCU
I know most everyone's fav Big 3 in the MCU is Cap Ironman and Thor but there's just something about the trio of Cap Nat and Sam that just does it for me. This movie is still in my top 5 all these years later

I just saw the face was Sebastian Stan's and knew there was no way he'd be cast as a completely different character.

If you're familiar with 1970's political movies like All The President's Men or The Candidate, you know that the casting of Robert Redford as the villain was GENIUS.

Mind you, those of us who had some familiarity with the comics story knew going in. We'd already heard of the Winter Soldier, so the title itself was a signal that Bucky Barnes would be back. Also, the introduction of Sam Wilson told us that Falcon would be joining the 🦸 roster. So the looks of surprise on the faces of new fans are always something to enjoy.

It wasn't his voice! Winter Soldier wasn't wearing the face mask during that scene at Pierce's house and I could see Sebastian Stan's face in the shadows! I think my PC monitor display settings might have made that possible. My "Wait" moment was because I was seeing his whole face for the first time. And thank you!
I agree. This movie is peak MCU. The casting of Robert Redford was probably a reference to the movie Three Days of the Condor (1975) in which he plays a CIA analyst caught "out in the cold," similar to the plight of Steve and Natasha in this movie. Condor is a classic movie touchstone that everyone should see.
I love your little after-edit when the Winter Soldier is reloading his gun… same girl, same. Also I’m obsessed with the knife fight choreography of that scene. I’m sure someone has already told you that Sebastian Stan did the whole knife choreography himself.
For me, Captain America: the Winter Soldier is, by far, the best film in the MCU -- it's put together with such care and craftsmanship, practically every scene is a master class in filmmaking. There are too many favorite moments to list. The breathtaking opening shot of the National Mall leading into Steve's first meeting with Sam, how quickly and effortlessly Sam establishes rapport with Steve based on their shared experiences as soldiers, the way that Steve casually drops "no polio is good" in between comments about improvements to diet and cooking and the advent of the Internet, the quick, flirty eye contact between Natasha and Sam as she whisks Steve off to their next mission... and we're literally *three minutes and twenty seconds* into the movie. Gasp!
But the moment I understood how good the movie was came at about 45:55, as Steve gets into the elevator at the Triskelion, just before the big elevator fight. There's a view of Washington, DC in the background. And in the middle of the shot, you see the Watergate Complex -- the DC office and hotel complex where the infamous Watergate break-in occurred. Now, I'd be surprised if one person in a thousand who saw the film would recognize the Watergate. It doesn't particularly stand out. But for those few who know what they're looking at, the shot tells you that the filmmakers know *exactly* what they're doing. (Robert Redford, of course, is famous in part for playing Bob Woodward in the 1976 film *All the President's Men*, which recounts the reporting which led to the Watergate scandal.)
I'm also blown away by the scene at the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian, because it's the deftest exposition dump I think I've ever seen. This movie came out before Marvel could just assume that everyone in the audience had seen all the prior movies, so the directors needed to explain Cap, his history, his cultural meaning, and his friendship with Bucky. And Steve's trip to the museum -- just to spend some time thinking about who he is, while the narrator explains to the audience who Cap is -- feels so natural that you hardly notice. And the backing score by Henry Jackman, doing his best (and excellent!) Aaron Copeland imitation, is perfect for the moment.
I could go on for pages.... But, mercifully, I won't.
5:05 Batroc was played by Hall-Of-Fame UFC fighter, Georges St. Pierre..In the comics, he's also a French kickboxing master, so nice casting, Including Robert Redford as the Head Hydra (First time in his long career I saw him do a evil bad guy role) 17:50..Loved the shocked look when u saw Zola's face! (How could shield have been so dumb as to draft former Nazis? Shoulda KNOWN something like that would happen!!) What I like most about this movie is that it stuck to the 1998 comic Marvel published in both plot/story.
Fun fact: the audio narration at the Smithsonian is performed by Lt Dan himself, Mr Gary Sinise. Military and veterans affairs is a pet interest of Mr Sinise, and whilst politically he and I may not see eye to eye on some things, his charitable ventures and advocacy has done a lot of good for veterans, and that's worth recognising and applauding; I suspect his involvement in this film is in part due to its stance on veterans and their needs.
The Fury chase changed everything for me. Kicked the movie into another level and easily top 3 MCU movies
It was a really excellent scene! I loved the focus on Fury for once in his own scene.
I can't stress enough how much I adore this film. The OSTs, acting, storyline, cinematography, the whole vibe and nature, they're just really well put together. The balance of action and one level down of the humor keeps the serious tone really solid compared to other films, just works. Also, Its how my love for Rogers and his persona really blossoms and sparks everything for me, absolutely stands high in my MCU list. Cannot wait for your future reaction!
Small data: Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, has previously played another Marvel character; he was the Human Torch in the Fantastic 4 movies.... If you compare both actings, you can have an idea of his range as an actor (he's more than a pretty face and a body sculpted by angels)
So many reactors never realize it’s Bucky! I was so surprised when you did. Hahaha. Knowing the comics, you go in expecting it. But if you don’t know the comics, they pull off a pretty great surprise!
Interesting fact: The voice of Nick Fury's SUV AI may sound familiar to some. The voice is by famous voice actor/narrator Robert Clotworthy. He's mostly known for being the narrator for History Channel shows such as "Ancient Aliens" and "The Curse of Oak Island" among other things. Great reaction!!
This is the first film in the MCU directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. You'll see these two attached to MANY of the best MCU films as directors.
There was intense episodes about Hydra overrun shield in SHIELD series. When characters who were doing good whole season before suddenly become hostile and you realize they were Hydra from very beginning all that time.
It’s funny how in the movie it was Captain America and his Howling Commandos but in the comics it was Nick Fury back in WW2 who had the Howling Commandos

Sebastian Stan gets all the credit for Bucky being in my top 3 favorite characters. He can go thru the entire spectrum of human emotions, all without saying a word. He would have killed it in the silent movie era.

Fun trivia - the Bible verse on Nick Fury's gravestone is the same one that Sam Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction quotes before he kills someone.
My favorite of all the MCU movies by far. As you stated, this had some of everything. But my appreciation comes from the fact that it's an espionage/spy thriller in the mold of the classic film Three Days of the Condor which, ironically, stars Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce in this Cap film). I highly recommend that one in the future. Evans, Johannson, Mackie, and Stan were all in top form for this one. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this. Since you love the dynamic of Steve and Nat here's a comics fun fact (NOT A SPOILER): In one of the comics Steve and Nat got married and had a son who took up the mantle of both his parents, he's essentially a super baby since his parents were super soldiers imagine his potential.
Another fun fact: In some of the comics Nat and Bucky are also romantically involved.
Definitely one of my top five MCU movies to this day, MAYBE the best one in terms of raw filmmaking (though not my favorite to re-watch.... That's coming next). What I really appreciate about this film is that it does something that the MCU has used to mostly great effect ever since: breaking out of the superhero genre. Sure, the previous MCU films had some fun with their tropes. "The First Avenger" is very much a Golden Age-style "pulp" superhero film. "Thor" borrows all sorts of Shakespearean elements. But they're still just superhero films with flairs added in. "The Winter Soldier" does the opposite: it isn't a superhero film, it's a 1970s-style hard-boiled spy thriller that just happens to be set in a superhero milieu. This is where Marvel starts getting creative, and just-in-time, too. As beloved as "Avengers" was, by the end of 2013, there were already quite a few people taking pot shots at the MCU with comments like "every film ends with a sky beam," or "the villains all suck (except Loki)." The MCU was starting to be seen as formulaic (one wonders how much that influenced Warner Bros. into giving the DC IPs to Zack Snyder around the same time, so he could get all angsty and grimdark with them). "The Winter Soldier" stopped those hot takes dead in their tracks, mostly, and the next film even more so. This is where it starts to get WEIRD. And the franchise is all the better for it. :D

A cool little Easter Egg for this movie is most of the time they show Bucky they play that eerie music. It kind of solidifies how dangerous he can be when he is in Winter Solider mode. Also if you noticed Fury's tombstone the quote was "The path of the righteous man..." from Pulp Fiction.
You just gotta give a shoutout to the comicbook writer's and artist that came up with these characters and storylines.
i have a theory or more like a wish, and it goes like this... at 9:35 yellow truck hits two cop cars (bad guys) and saves fury, i always believed that marvel would make it so the person driving the truck is the punisher. that would be awesome! 😎
also at 21:36 the yellow truck appears again when bucky drags sidwell from the car and throws him out of the window.
Somewhere in the back of my mind every time I see Cobie Smulders character in the prisoner transport kicking butt is a voice going “Damn… Robin Sparkles is a bad ass”. 😜
Rewatching this and reflecting on when Steve chooses to let Bucky beat the crap out him rather than fight his best friend, I realized that Captain America actually loses (or would have lost if not for an intervening circumstance) many of the climactic fights he's been in in the MCU yet fans still love him for the physical and moral courage in his character and for love and loyalty in his heart. It kind of reminds of how the old movie "300 Spartans" affected Frank Miller (creator of the graphic novel that Zack Snyder's "300" movie is based on) when he saw it on TV and showed him that a hero isn't the person who always triumphs but the person who stands firmly by their values even to the point of self sacrifice.

I watched the First Season of "Agents of Shield" on TV, Didn't watch this in theaters, Soo Season Two didn't make sense.... Cause on the TV Show they only referenced "What happended in DC" never explained............

This is definitely in my top 5 MCU movies, I love how this is a spy thriller/espionage movie that just so happens to be a Captain America movie.
And funnily enough, I saw this movie before I saw the first Cap movie, so the Bucky reveal didn't hit quite the same way but even on its own, it works so well and Steve's reactions sells the pain and history there.m

🦸 My favorite part of the reaction is a toss up. While I completely enjoy Black a widow and Cap as a duo, I loved how you predicted Nat kicking Stilwell off that roof. Also your reaction as Peggy’s dementia kicked while Steve was visiting. I saw it pull your heart strings. But I’m glad Steve was able to reconnect with Peggy.

that elevator scene is one of the best scenes in the whole catalogue of marvel movies imo. what's so great about this movie is it could work wonderfully as a spy/conspiracy thriller even if it wasn't a comic-superhero movie. (similar to how Rogue One was. a great war story that didn't have to be set in the Star Wars universe to be good)

The elevator scene and the Nick Fury SUV scene are the very reason that the Russo brothers were picked to helm Infinity War and Endgame. Two of the most amazing scenes in all of Marvel (IMO).
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is hands down my favorite Phase Two MCU movie. It totally is one of the few sequels that is better than the first movie.
One of the things I like about the MCU is that they take B/C-tier characters from the comics and turn them into flavor in the films. The kick fighter that Cap fights early on in the film named Georges Batroc is based on a minor villain from the comics named Batroc "the leaper". He came into existence during the martial arts craze of the late '60s and early '70s and he's supposed to be a master of Savate which I guess is a French kick fighting martial art.
This remains, to this day, my favourite mcu movie (and up there as one of my favourite movies of all time tbh). I've lost count of how many times I've watched it at this point, it's just become my number one comfort movie for some reason. Just the characters, the storyline, the tension - 10 out of 10.

I liked the Agents of Shield television show. It takes place as the movies do and before the first season was done they brought the cast of the show to a screening if this movie, and they wondered if they were now agents of nothing.

The STRIKE Team leader, Brock Rumslow, has a different history in the comics since Red Skull has been used in the first but not this movie. In the comics, Brock was among a group of mercenaries sent to a chalet in the Alps to kill a man. The other two stne cold killers died in the climb and facing the target. Brock was nearly killed before he found out the target was a revived Red Skull. Brock had been a cruel, brutal kid who idolized the Red Skull.
He actually got mad about an impostor and started fighting harder. Instead of killing him on the spot for sport, Red Skull took him on as a partner and gave him the name Crossbones.

In the MCU, simply a Hydra double agent fighting Falcon, the chosen fighting partner of Captain America.
This was when the MCU was making great movies that happened to have costumed heroes.

30:27, I was always a little disappointed that it wasn't really Jenny Agutter's council character who was mopping the floor with those Hydra guys. I figured she was like an early SHIELD member that Peggy recruited from Britain. But considering she got shot the day before, Natasha is one bad ass.
A few things. First, the bad guy ( Robert Redford) this is the first movie he played the bad guy , but when he was young in the 70s , he did a movie ( this movie is very similar too ) cia instead of shield and he played the cup role. ( three days of the condor), but everyone turns on him, doesn't he doesn't know why . And and a world class assassin is looking for him . ( less action) but still s great movie.
Also, in the file , a couple of the ( winter soldiers) previous missions were ( the Kennedy assassination) and the murder of Tony starks parents, ( and made it look like an accidental car crash) and Tony's father was a director and Co founder of shield. ( from the 40s to the 90s ) as well as ceo of stark industries.
Sometimes the "don't set expectations" admonition is so hard to abide by...there was a particular moment when my eyes opened wide

Around the time this movie came out, someone online pointed out that Evans looks quite a bit like a young Redford, and that's stuck with me since. I wonder if it was a deliberate casting choice, implying that Pierce was chosen as handler because he kept Bucky more compliant, with his 'save the world' spiel and looking like the guy Bucky would have followed anywhere.
