WOW, You gave birth at home. That sounds scary enough but to do it during a severe storm that took out your powerlines, is amazing. And you calmly mentioned it only for context while talking about noisy birds. You are fearless. Enjoy your quilting!❤

Wow, I'm always surprised to find another connection with you. I too have been in my home the same amount of time. Fun to hear about the rooks! What a great story about the tempest that brought forth Owen, ushering him into the world! You should do a little booklet for each of your children about their birth story. I wrote one for my daughter.

Isn't it lovely when it's a nice day in winter? You almost feel the sun give you the energy you lack in winter sometimes. Like you I sit there with my eyes closed feeling the sunlight warm me and nurture me. I miss willow trees. In Holland I was used to many different kinds of willow. The knotty willow is very obvious in Dutch landscapes. Last year I tried to root some weeping willows in pots. Well.......somehow they didn't like that soil. So this year I'm going to try again, but I'll put them in the garden right away. I have to find someone with a willow to donate some cuttings.....lol. I can't believe I killed willow.....like you said...they are like weeds. I'm glad the rooks are still close enough for you to enjoy and see them. But far enough that they don't annoy you.

    • @thelasthomelyhouse

That is quite impressive to kill willow! they do like their feet in water! that might have been the problem in the pots. yes - that move the rooks made was the best thing - I actually quite enjoy hearing them in the distance now! ha ha!!!

Happy New Year! Looks like a nice day there. Very windy and raining here. We have lots of big white pines here that the crows live in - they do make a lot of noise! We have ravens too as we live in farm country. Crows are plentiful here and farmers can shoot them if they get in corn. Not sure if your Rooks are same as our crows or larger ravens? We have a HUGE population of squirrels this year - eating all my bird seed!
Hope you had great holidays. My son and family were here for a week's visit. Lovely to have them but those two little boys have worn me out! Now I am recovering and need to go back and finish last episodes of your reading. I've lots of catching up to do but Winter is long here. Seed catalogs are arriving so that will keep me busy!
Can't wait to see the quilt you are working on! Take care, oxox

do you remember the dollars? well my son and his girlfriend had christmas in New York and sent me a picture of the breakfast they bought with that money - it looked absolutely delicious! I like how that turned out!
rooks, crows, ravens, jackdaws, magpies ... they are all the same family - corvids I think they are called - noisy messy birds. and your squirrels are the big grey ones I think that are taking over here from out native red squirrels - they are half the size and don't stand a chance against the big greys - I used to see a family of reds most years - but not this past four or five - its such a shame.
I'll post the quilt when I've sent it - they should be the first to see it I guess!
Owen enjoying his new job very much and loving the city! xxx

@@thelasthomelyhouse The grey squirrels here mainly live in forest and only occasionally come to feeders. The red squirrels are the problem here! They are destroying our barn(CHEWING!!!), got in our attic and house (husband worked hard sealing up all the ways they were getting in house as they chew electrical wiring and cause fires!)and actually chew my wood feeders - very destructive! I do enjoy watching them in Autumn when they leave the apples or mushrooms in crook of tree branches to dry - very clever!
So glad your son and girl enjoyed their visit! oxox

Rooks are awesome birds. I would sit on rhe bench every day possible at least for a little bit. I am a fan of Rooks and their American kin. Used to have a lot of crows living outside my kitchen window Landlord removed all of the pine trees as the roots were wrecking havoc with the sewers. Its a sad. They all moved down the alley.

Good morning Kate! Here in Michigan it is a gray day, but not too cold will be in the 30s today. The snow has melted on the ground and a few days ago it was in the fifties and I spent the afternoon puttsing in my garden, it was wonderful! I just found your channel from the "What Vivi Did Next" channel and then spent much of my leisure time between Christmas and New year binge watching your videos from the beginning. My family and I just visited Scotland this past August, my Mom was born and raised there and allot of the area near your home brings me back there, lovely! We are kindred, I am 61 and have always been a Gardener and have been a permaculturist for the last 10 years. Love your energy and your positivity, thank you for giving us this peek into your life.

I visited Michigan when I was 24 - about a thousand years ago! I remember the trees and the lake and mile after mile of birch forest. It was autumn and the trees were beautiful. I should be in the garden getting the beds ready for the coming growing season - but its too wet and muddy - I'll stitch indoors instead! It is so lovely to have you here from Vivi's channel - she is a breath of fresh air isn't she! xxxxxxx

What great story Kate. Happy January 1st 2019!
Here in Canada we have large crows, and they are horribly noisy! A flock of them here is called a murder. I often wonder if they are called that because they are so noisy and disturbing that sometimes you feel like murdering them!
They can be so bad that in the large green space behind my home when they come home at night to roost, there can be hundreds of them and the noise can be deafening.
One morning there were probably about forty of them in my front yard standing in kind of a "loose" circle around a deceased crow and the noise from those forty or so was so much worse than normal. I came to find out that they were basically holding a wake for the deceased crow! From that incident I learned alot about crows and they are extremely social and intelligent.

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

they have a very complicated society but they are very loud about it! once a year, they all fly to the hill opposite me and stand about in groups, walking from one to another of these little groups of rooks - I call it their 'wine and cheese party' its fascinating to watch! xxx

    HI Kate,
What a beautiful walk on the first day of the New Year.
I would have loved to have gone along. With us it is absolutely dark and grey and does not want to get really bright. First I had to google what "rooks " are. In Germany, ravens or crows are said. When they stand on the ground, they are quite big. Most of the time, they can be seen with us in harvested fields, where they look for edible things.
Such a great sunshine makes the New Year begin well,
    Greetings
    Claudia

    • @thelasthomelyhouse
      @thelasthomelyhouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

there is a saying to sort out the rooks from the crows - 'if you see a lot of crows together - they are rooks and if you see a rook on its own - it's a crow' ! This explains the different nature of the two - rooks have a very complex society whereas crows are solitary birds. Ravens, magpies, jackdaws, jays - all the same family - carnivores and quite unpleasant - I have to used to them on the farm for they are everywhere!
I hope you get your share of sunshine soon Claudia! xxxx

Happy New Year. I decided to invite my two crafting sisters to lunch and dinner today. They had to bring a UFO ( unfinished object) to work on. Turkey soup from Thanksgiving frozen leftovers and dinner was Crock pot beef stew.
My son came over for dinner. One sister and I sewed quilting blocks and other sister crocheted.
Nice way to start the new year. Made some progress on projects.
Sunny morning in the 40s so I fed the birds (and squirrels). Relaxing day.
Enjoyed your room stories. I moved into my house and gave birth to my son the same Yeats as you but without all the adventures. Keep telling your stories.

Amazing story and interesting! Enjoy your bit of time in the sun. It’s sunny here also but still fairly cool-ish most days. Looking forward to seeing your new quilt and the tidy up project. Love your cabinet! Today I’m rearranging my sewing room - again! Perhaps a severe purge would be more helpful. Maybe your tidy up project will inspire me. One can hope. Lol 😂 😂

Happy New Year Kate! What a happy thing that you showed up in my roku feed about a week or so back and now your my new friend :) I enjoy these videos a lot, seeing what your up to, hearing the stories, watching Eileen or the chickens. As a 'want to be' away in a village instead of the sprawling noisy busy city your chats give calm and inspiration that may be one day I'll take myself off to a quiet spot along with my dogs and artwork and live peacefully with a lovely garden near the water. Keep up the good job and I love the ceramic stars!
