    Thanks very much for explaining testing and adding calcium in pool. However, to make it easy for metric system, Calcium dihydrate (70%) raises 50 ppm with 3.84 Kg for 37900 litres after conversion. Anhydrous CaCl2 uses 2.69 Kg/37900 litres. Adjust litre figure to current pool capacity (nearest guess of water level) then work out calcium amount in proportion. Add calcium with advice/precautions and check level carefully before further top-ups. Correct those figures if I'm wrong. Never add alkalizer (bicarbonate/carbonate) together with calcium. You'll get insoluble scales on pool and equipment surfaces.

    Got it now. The metal sequestering agent eats up your active chlorine as a side effect. I know that Jack's Magic and Metal Out do this as well as most metal out products so I assume that Bioguard Copper will do the same. I treated a pool with Jack's Magic the Purple Stuff a few weeks ago and am still trying to get the chlorine back in shape. I would add some Shocktrine to get rid of the Combined Chlorine. Your FC reading is good. It is the sequestering agent that is messing things up.

  • @SPL

    They are two different types of disinfectants Chlorine based and Bromine . Most test will measure both. Unlike Chlorine where you can measure Free ,Available and Combined Chlorine- Bromine is only measured as Total Bromine. When you measure Total Chlorine it is just that and you will need to test separately for Combined Chlorine. I touch on this in my Taylor Test kit video. You find Bromine usage in Commercial spas or Cruise Ships. It doesn't produce a strong chemical smell like chlorine.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    They sell 1 pound bags of Shocktrine at your local pool store (I don't think Leslie's carries it). 1 bl of Shocktrine will treat 10,000 gallons. The Free Chlorine of 3.0 is probably countering any effects of the combined chlorine. Besides - getting an accurate combined chlorine reading is debatable in the industry. If the water is clear you probably can just ignore the Total Chlorine reading. The Shocktrine won't hurt - it is Potassium which counters the Ammonia in the water.

    I have a fiberglass swim spa and after playing around with all the fancy bromines, etc. they say work, I found just a good shock with a few cups fill every other day and getting all the leaves out and keep a clean pool.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    For some reason the readings at the pool store don't match up to the numbers you get at the pool side. If the shock you used was Dichlor it could raise your Conditioner level a bit not sure if it could raise it that much though.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you test your tap water and see what that reading is? My guess is that your test is off. It could be correct also. 650 is pretty high. If you verified the number as correct then draining a few feet of water and refilling should lower it down - unless your tap water is also hard.

    Also originally added 15lbs of the Bioguard copper stain remover which I think caused all my problems with my TC being so high. You say having any TC is bad, correct? I tested with my DPD Kit tonight and the TC is still at the highest reading.

    My Calcium Hardness is reading at 650. I know the only way to lower it is the drain the pool. If I rented a sump pump from Home Depot, will I be able to hook it up myself.
    Also my TC is high. I shocked my pool with 26lbs of shock but still the TC is as high. How can this be? Is it due to my CH being too high?
    Is liquid chlorine the same as buying the bleach in the grocery store? Should I stop using the tablets and the shock granuals?
    Your videos are very helpful.

    I messed up on one of my salt pools.
    It has high salt and high Calcium hardness and high alkalinity. I let the PH get high, and noticed white flakes building up in the corners of the pool. I could scoop them out with the net. I have been needing to clean the salt cell every other week. Now I'm struggling to get the PH down.
    I should have done a partial drain for the salt levels, but now it is summer and I don't want to drain a pool in the heat.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just lower the pH down.

  • @SPL
    @SPL  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Make sure your test reagents are fresh. That could give you a false reading - that is pretty high. Is your pool water clear or cloudy?
    What is your Free Chlorine reading? Do you have another test kit that uses OTO- drops (It turns yellow indicating chlorine levels - 5 in 1 test kit)
    Liquid chlorine is about twice as strong as store bought bleach.
    PS. I have to approve all comments - there are a few twits out there...

    One of my new accounts does not hold calcium. I added 50lbs it’s about 16k gallons. It’s at 120 ppm .I added it 10lbs a day tested and it would still be low. It does have a lot of bubbles coming out of the return line. Meaning it has a leak. I’m thinking the calcium might be leaking out? Starting calcium was about 30ppm.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet the leak is pretty substantial. Probably the new fill water is lower in calcium and thus you are getting a lower reading every week.

    Hi, here in Arizona we have absurdly high calcium levels. Fresh water starts around 500-700, and by summer the level is nearing 1000 ppm. pH control is difficult due to all the pollens and dust, plant matter, etcetera. It tends towards alkaline. In sumer I use baking soda to both soften and buffer pH. Is there any sustainable way to remove the metal that won't drive my other chemistry crazy?

    • @SPL
      @SPL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using a metal sequestering agent with the CuLator 4.0 is an effective method. You may want to add Borates to your pool and bring it up to 50 ppm. This will buffer both the pH and Calcium in the water. The Optimizer Product I recently reviewed works really well.

    I recently drained my 3 ears old aquartzscape pool and did fresh water in la. I noticed my calcium hardness is 130. It's been about 4 weeks. I'm going to increase it tomorrow. Can my pool surface suffer damage and etching in a matter of 4 weeks, or am i ok; I saw some stains in the deep end that looked like the surface top layer was dark spots or was removed layer i don't know if I'm just being paranoid or will the damage happen this quickly in the pool its has been more then 4 weeks that i refilled water everything is balanced right i didn't pa attention to calcium hardness

    I got my water tested from Leslie's and initial test showed reading of 700 and 2nd test reading showed 460. My questions is, can I drain some pool water and add water softener water that is hooked up in my house to lower the calcium level and if yes then how much water I can add. Will draining 6 inch of pool water and adding soft water help lower the calcium ? I am seeing whilte hardened stuff built up around the tiles so I am thinking it because of calcium hardness. I don't want to drain the whole pool so what could be the alternative.

    • @SPL
      @SPL  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TrendTrader4U I would say the 400 range is probably the more correct reading. Not much can be done about high calcium hardness except to drain some water out and refill the pool. Depends on how big your pool is as to how much water to drain out. I would get the levels retested just to verify the number before draining some out.

      There are a few things you can try to reduce the calcium build-up on the plates. Beautec by Easy Care is one alternative. Adding Borates to bring the levels to 30-50 ppm also has an effect on calcium build-up on the plates. I have several videos on adding borates on my Channel - a complete playlist also. As far as the flakes - sometimes Phosephates in the water react with the salt system. Adding Phosefree to the pool through the skimmer over a course of a month or so will help. Add 2 capfuls through the skimmer each week for 4-5 weeks and the flakes should dissipate. I know it sounds weird but it works.
