I love this idea from a male's perspective. I will eventually watch this later when I am through the series. I am on Chapter 9 of Throne of Glass just trying to get the motivation to read it. Happy reading!
I loved this video! I work in a male dominated industry and there was this really “manly man” (for lack of better words) who bonded with me over the throne of glass series. He started reading them because he has a daughter and wants to read more heroine stories 🥺
I’ve read the series up to Heir of Fire and I’ve been pretty lukewarm on it so far. I was considering dnf-ing the series, but this video gave me motivation to pick up the next book (Queen of Shadows). So thanks
Appreciate all of the work that went into this video! Had this one saved in my watch later for 2 months watching as I finished each TOG book. So exciting can finally watch the end since I finished Kingdom of Ash
I'm in the middle of Queen of Shadows but I was not fond of Heir Of Fire until the end. It took me so long to read. I literally skimmed over most of Manons parts so I'm glad to hear that her parts get better. I just haven't cared enough to really read Manons parts of the book.

Ian are you going to read & review any modern, classical or historical fantasy this year? I am currently reading Wyrd Sisters & Trials of the Empire. I just finished First Law with Wisdom of Crowds. One series that you and your wife might love is the Gael Song by Shauna Lawless. She was just tapped to also write a Romantsy series. I bet she is a great bridge for your viewers who want to try a well written historical fantasy. The Empire Trilogy by Feist/Wurst is another trilogy that has a big romance similar to the Outlander series by Diana Gablon.

Commenting to say thanks for agreeing Chaol was an ass lol. I was reading the comments of the review of QoS from like 8 years ago and a lot of girls were saying how they didn’t understand why Aelin was better with Rowan and how they liked Chaol. Clearly relationship standards have changed. Chaol was too weak for Aelin, I mean that in a non-physical way, he didn’t know what he stood for, betrayed her, and didn’t accept her flaws. Rowan is her match and accepts her for who she is with her past and everything!!!
Chaol wasn't too weak for Aelin. The fact that their relationship didnt work was also Aelins fault. Chaol didn't knew that Celaena Sardothien was Aelin Ashryver Galathynius bc she purpusely hid those parts from him. He didn't got a chance to love all of her. So for me it's kind of unfair to hate him for that when he wasn't meant to know all of her. Aelin was also an ass to Chaol as she blamed him for many things including abandoning Dorian and not killing King of Adarlan sooner, when she was the assassin who lived in his castle and had many opportunities to do so. As for not accepting her flaws, in Crown of Midnight Chaol still wanted to be with her after finding out that she was fae, she was the one that said no. You talk about how he betrayed her (I'm assuming you're talking about Nehemia's death) but then again if Nehemia felt that she was in danger she could've told Celaena herself about it. Not to mention that Elena Galathynius also knew about Nehemia's death bc she was the one who talked into that. I wonder why you don't hold her accountable for that? Even if Chaol tried to prevent Nehemia's demise, there's no posibility that she wouldnt have died later in the series? You say that Rowan is Aelins match when he pretty much emotionally abused her in Heir of Fire, to the point when she didn't even want to live and Emrys had to tell him to reconsider his attitude. He's not even a good mentor as he never properly explained her how she should've control her powers when she was unstable with it, he used Luca for training. He judged her for abandoning her ppl when he himself kïlled thousands in Maeves name and served her even before the blood oath. He bit her, when biting is considered a sexual act with fae in this universe. It was not only confirmed by Sarah J Maas herself in an interview but its also later mentioned in Kingdom of Ash by Cairn, so Rowan tecnically, sexually assaulted her. He's not better in Queen of Shadows. In this book he became slightly controlling, possessive and couldn't even stand Aedion being near Aelin. All his pov centered around how he was so horny over a 19 yo teenager while also thinking of her as brat. He thought that just bc he had claim onto her he would follow her around, disrespect her boundries and mock her for seeking independence. Aelin even calles him a territorial fae bastard at one point. You say that he accepts her past, and everything but just bc he accompanied her to see Arobynn doesn't change the fact that when she had to be Celaena the assassin (her past btw), he was disgusted by her. He even called Celaena a horrible monster. Apart from that he also showed that he's not a fan of ruthless Aelin.
I've started listening to the Throne of Glass audiobook about a month ago and slowly getting through it. What order, now that you've read these books, would you recommend to read them? I'm thinking ToG, CoM and then Assassin's Blade.
ToG finallyyyyyyyyy! Interesting, that you didn't like Manon in book 3 and 4 - I really enjoyed her pov (and the witches overall); maybe because I was a sucker for the whole "How to train your _Wyvern_" plot 😂 One thing I need to mention before I click off due to spoilers for book 6 and 7 (shame on me for not finishing them just yet👀) BUT the way you filmed the bookmark progress in the tandem read was fun! I know it's just a small thing to point out but nevertheless, liked it ✨ Now you need to get Ash to read the series as well👀
@@iangubeli Completely understandable, there is no sense in rushing your TBR - the enjoyment is what matters most ✨ I will look forward to it as well as other projects from you guys!
Hey, I just wanted to say that I really like your video but I don't agree with your take on Chaol from Queen of Shadows that you bring in 21:02. At the end of Crown of Midnight, Celaena told Chaol that she would always pick him and instead returned with Rowan. Before someone says that Rowan gave them time to sort things out, that's still not an excuse for shitty move. Don't make promises if you're unable to fullfil them. Aelin also blamed Chaol for many things in Queen of Shadows including abandoning Dorian, Nehemia's death (that was only partially his fault bc in Empire of Storms it's said that Nehemia planned her death, not to mention Elena Galathynius was also part of it) and not killing King of Adarlan sooner when she was the best assassin in the country, was living in his palace and had many opportunities to do so.
For me, is like saying that harry potter universe or the shadowhunter universe is girlish most fantasy books are across-the-board for everyone (in gender perspective) know the binding of a book (series usually as fantasy books usually are not standalones) is the problem, usually targets women without thinking the general population of readers.... and much later down the line, they craft alternative bindings of a book.... there's the problem and confusion for me.... I remember being in a bookstore a few weeks ago... I heard a group of guys asking were the english book section is ....and when they came they just give it one look... and said "that's all girly stuff is nothing for men to buy to read anymore" and I was confused, when I left looked again from a guy's prospective of the book shelfs.... and they were right .... In first site, the only thing you could see was colourful flowery patterns and you know what I mean ( what you see usually in every female on social media) It had authors for everyone but not in mind of the male buyers that don't want to look like a flower shop on their bookshelfs and is understandable.... 😅

It doesn’t get spicy until the tandem read. Before that, the series had NOTHING spicy, which was a refresher for most adult fiction nowadays. The spice level isn’t too bad, I really didn’t have to skip around as much as I thought I would have to!
@@iangubeli that is definitely good to know! And SERIOUSLY THOUGH that’s why I’ve stuck to YA , I wish in general all authors understood that sex isn’t a storyline . I don’t understand why do we need male perspective on fantasy? Just because it’s written by a woman it must be not serious and for women? It’s not less good of many others written by men and it’s not even erotic or anything. WTH.
I took the idea from some other booktubers. The title is just for fun. I never intended this to seem as if Throne of Glass was lesser or not serious. I think Sarah J Maas is an excellent writer, and I think how I praise the series throughout the video shows that. In fact, this is one of my favorite series now. @@iangubeli thank you for taking the time to respond to me, you earned a new follower. To be honest I did indeed assume like 99% of the men out there you want to say fantasy written by women or romantasy is not worth it and you felt like your perspective would be so unique since it’s made for women and it’s not fantasy lol. Love that you saw its true value and didn’t need to manspalin anything 💅
I followed your channel as you reviewed and recommended high fantasy and some interesting historical fiction works. Now I feel like you’re morphing into every other channel with only picking overly saturated popular titles. I’ll still watch but I hope there isn’t just romance from now on.
I also really loved your reviews of Stephen king, made me prioritise needful things.
Trust me, I have felt that way too. The things I am reading now, and the videos I plan on making won’t come anywhere near romance and stuff like this for a while. I was just trying some things out.
Omg finally someone who also doesn't care about the witches in the third book 🥲i gave up on the series on that book actually lmao
I almost did! I eventually just ended up skipping the witch portions.
@@iangubeli I did the same but since the book was overall slow I ended up giving up 😭
@@nightly.chapter Understandable! If ever I reread them, definitely skipping that book entirely!
