Interesting though still not convinced, switching to ATs when upsizing, seems to me to alter the findings slightly, for consistency a MT all on 3 sizes makes sense if you are testing outcomes, I have both for my truck and I notice a difference on road mostly (different truck ) but is noticeable, though again they are different brands and my MTS are quite aggressive! Love that you showed the blooper at the front and its a lesson for all of us, no matter how much experience you have, you can make mistakes, never take your eye off the ball until through the obstacle, we all get over cocky, lucky you didn't do a rear quarter, as good as the 2.8l content has been, I would love to see you keep the Troopy and the 79, you wont get these again, 2.8l you know you can buy again new! That said I would love to see you sell the 76, do an upgrade on the Troopy with a Just Autos 6spd conversion, to me that is the ultimate 70s series upgrade if you are wanting an Auto option, the Troopy is an investment, you aren't throwing dollars away, the 76 has limited appeal and market if when you do sell it, but with the effort already in the Troopy Id hate to see it ditched at this stage, its unfinished as to what you can do, Id like to see the channel get back to trips more than builds, it was your forte now its getting like ASPs direction and others overly done love the sound of own voices too much less driving! Always enjoy builds but trips and using them is what we don't see enough of, plus miss Torbs, where is the old legend ?🤘
Bigger tyres will affect fuel around town where the rack wouldn't, on the highway its the other way around. Rarely do they both affect it at the same time.
I've rock packed several 79's in this situation and worse off camber. What I've actually realised is that sometimes in this situation, you are better to turn off the rear locker and keep the front engaged. This is because, the rear can cause the arse to pull side ways, which you can see the outcome in this vid.
Definitely worth having a cargo barrier with all that stuff in the back, can be a life saver. Lots of light ones available. A windshield would probably help heaps with fuel economy on the roof racks. Just probably wouldn't look as cool😅
After you compare with 35s, it would be nice to then do a dyno comparison. The 79 has no doubt lost power and torque over the years. I think this would really settle any doubt. Great work though mate. 👍
The nice thing about the 2.8 is family camping life is a bit easier. My girls hate the Troopy exit and entry into the back seats 🙈. The 76 can still get the Thor conversion. And you could end up having two setup for the back. One with seats the other without.
@@adamandresen9911 Adam AluCab have a roof conversion which is the same as the Hercules conversion that is done on the 76 LC called the Thor Conversion. i.e. makes it like a Troopy conversion. 🤙
I have had so many different 4x4 vehicles (4x4 van, short wheelbase 4x4s, long wheelbase 4x4s), traveled all-over Europe and part in Canada and in US (where I live now). Since I got my Jeep Gladiator (after 2 Wranglers JL), I will never go back to anything that is not a pickup truck. The way you can customize the space, and the sheer amount of it, simply makes for the best setup, also considering that the bed is completely separated from the front of the truck. With a good lift and decent sized tires the wheelbase is not too big of a problem, especially in the higher end trims (Rubicon). I do understand, and agree, that Toyotas can be more reliable, but I think by now they are about equal with Jeep having a few corks that you get to know in the forums and prepare about. Anyway this is not a Jeep vs Toyota argument, but more pickup-truck vs cab-truck. I would love to hear your opinion Ronny. Great videos as usual, long time follower here.
I don’t think you can make a Wagon vs Pickup conclusion just based off of a Jeep . The cargo space in the wranglers is a Joke. Can’t fit anything and can’t carry anything. 76,78s are a whole different anymals in terms of cargo space/load carrying abilities.
@@Arda86ca No, sorry, I haven't had only Wranglers. I have had many vehicles and also a couple of Delica mini van. The pickup truck is just simply a better option as it allows for a completely separate space. In my Gladiator I have plenty of space in the cabin, with 3 comfortable rear seats that can accommodate load of gear, and plus the whole pickup bed that can be used with the rooftop tent on the top as well. The amount of gear I have to carry with me for cinematography and photography is a lot and there is no way I would make it in a Wagon like that one. Plus my dog stays in the back and there are no hairs in the cabin, which also was a huge issue before. The bed can become a small camper, can be used as cargo plus rooftop tent, can be used with a canopy, and all of that without even touching the cabin inside. Is just a lot better. And arguably the Gladiator with a good lift is better than all of these other wagons offroad. I also tried a Defender 130 and I still found that to be less spacious and effective at most of the stuff.
Good viddo mate, i have the rear of my FJ cruiser set up with same with the same tie down points. I did vuild a cavity to alide my table in and out .That way, i dont need to remove anything for the table.
Great video! Im very interested on how you adapt to wagon life. I only have a wagon and really couldn't fully apply your touring lifestyle to my wagon because you've used a ute and a people carrier.
I love ma wagon . Light and powerful. I’ve been towing around my heavy builders trailer with my old hilux 2016 model, got my wagon back from gvm and 33s fitted plus track correction. Yes it’s a v8 . Yes the trailer is way less noticeable behind the wagon . I do not take my baby v8 wagon for granted I love her . Especially now with all her new mods . Bp51 shocks . So smooth . Has anyone ever done some stronger door hinge / latch to take the extra weight of the bigger spare wheel on the rear door . I can imagine some extra ratel is about to come my way from that . Good vid . Wagon life !
Can’t believe it, even if it passes will that be enough to sell one of your other babies? That’s exactly why I’m bit afraid of using my front locker, I’ve gotta use it heaps more to get used to a flow with on/off when/where for my FJ. Got me suspense building, great honest video. My FJ uses the same fuel around town as when loaded up with a full roof rack on highway. You have done a great comprehensive practical test for Toyota on the way.
I like the simple set up in the rear and the roof rack. I’ve been considering a drawer system but have pretty much come to the decision boxes is simpler and lighter. Is that a front runner roof rack? Great learnings from the drive.
apparently the 250 prado will have the ability to keep the torque converter locked up in sport mode (about time) - does this cruiser have the same ability or they've different gearboxes?
1:05 Ronny you didn't actually stick your arm out in order to hold your 'cruiser from falling sideways in the moment, did you? Because if you did, you must have a lot of faith in your forearm strength. 🤣 Also, at 3:50 seeing it wiggle after the tire touched it was a witty little touch. 😁

Just shows you have to keep your head in the game, even the most experienced drivers come unstuck. I don't envy you having to choose between your 3 children, I guess the big thing will be reliability of the old vs new, both in repairs/spares and mod availability. Still not 100% sold on the 2.8, I feel it may be compromised over the long haul
An interesting video, What was the gauge you used to show the gear you were in, and was it a standard setting or a custom addon like in scan gauge ? I am interested in knowing what gear I am in when driving the prado.
Yeah definitely an OOPSIE on the obstacle!! That said we are all human and we all make mistakes. On the basic modifications that you have done so far. I can say that I do like the look of the 33's and the Roof rack as it just sits right with it. I feel a small lift(2-3 inch at best) would finish the look alone. For the back I say it's fine for now but maybe consider some basic drawer setup of sorts. Don't want to go too crazy with the 76 since I suspect you may sell it. How will it tow with bigger tires? Well in my experience with a 2019 Ranger here in the US running the 2.3 I can say it did fine towing with both 32 and 33 inch tires. Mind you the factory tire size was a 30 inch and I had it tuned with the 32 and 33 inch tires. If you don't have the 76 tuned I suspect it may do ok with 33's at best and do absolutely horrible with 35's. If you get it tuned you will be good with 33's but will still be questionable on 35's. Do you like Wagon Life? I'm going to suspect not entirely. To elaborate I feel you will prefer to stay in the 79 more often and thanks to how you set it up I feel you like the 78 as it is a House on wheels. Yes there are pros and cons to the 78 and 76, but I feel you should stick with the 78 and 79. As for the 76, try selling it to Harry!

As always Ronny... you make very good and informative videos and keep up the good work...I am sooo interested in this one... How can a 4 banger be better than V8... anyways... Did you have to correct the rear axle width?
A combination of heavier tyres, heavier wheels & larger diameter tyres which ruins your gear ratios putting more load on your gearbox which causes your lock up clutch to unlock every time you're using anymore than light acceleration so you're always loosing efficiency through your torque converter.
How are you checking the L/100km? after changing tyre size the odometer will be under reading 5%. What you will be reading as L/100km will really be L/105km. Even if the fuel economy didnt really change it will say its 5% worse
Good point , the same 2.8 troopy runs the bigger tyres from factory, can you adjust ecu settings to suit using Toyota tech stream or will Toyota workshop do it ???

You’re not selling the 79 and you know it 😉 Comparing the V8 to 2.8 Auto is like comparing a grill to a microwave. Yes, it might cook faster but no one wants a microwaved steak.
Ronny, I wonder if you considered 255/85r16? Just as an experiment or a change. It will still give you the clearance but lighter, bigger profile than 285/75. I know Maxxis don’t make the Razr in that size. Though I wish they did. But importantly, 255 is just better 😁
The last test will be ... "Asking the wife" which one she would prefer to drive the most ?. I will start buying lottery tomorrow for the chance of owning a well built Troopy.
I'd sell all 3. Get a 2.8 Auto dual cab 79. Pre rego modify: Rear coil, marks portals, 2.5 adjustable remote reservoir shocks with no lift but on 33's. You now have the lowest (less tippy) but with the most clearance 79 going. Wait, don't steel my idea homie.
ps Marks portals on 35's are dumb as it causes you to need brake upgrade, it brakes more stuff under load and defeats the purpose of portal axels, which is getting more clearance without needing bigger tyre and all the negatives that go along.
The 76 is such a shorty for no good reason. If you put a bed behind the front seats (done sometimes in European builds) you should be 1.6 m tall or less. They could at least have used the length of the 78. There's not a single touring 76 on planet earth without a city of boxes on top.
The 2.8 on 33’s seems like the perfect all-around vehicle.
Yeap

We’ll see what your better half has to say, hey? I reckon the Troopies days are numbered..!
Can you do a comparison between the dual cab use and a he Troopy? Which one is better to tour with
Depends if you tow or not? Troopy is mainly for couples dual cab for familys (unless you do personal custom mods to suit your needs)
Just by adding those 33" you've lost about 150nm torque.. a tune will help there .. 35" will be too much imo

[2:14] Why A-TRAC did not engage?
Pretty sure atrac is not sensitive enough to pick on that wheel spin
If in 4LO it most likely will not engage especially if you have the rear locker engaged.
Didnt engage because the rear was still locked
My Toyota 4Runner in tough situations I do both.
I reckon Ronny will end up with a 2.8 79
You need a bullbar on that on that LC
It would be great to know the difference in a new replacement motor for the v8 compared to the 4cyl
Give reverse a hard time with the bigger tires. See if the clutch pack can hold up
Yeah, you'll never ditch the V8.
I would very much like to see a 76 vs. Luxy video.
Max tracks are mass air disruptors. The max tracks probably effect your fuel economy as an empty rack.😮
Keep the 79
The only problem with wagons I find is fire wood
A combination of heavier tyres, heavier wheels & larger diameter tyres which ruins your gear ratios putting more load on your gearbox which causes your lock up clutch to unlock every time you're using anymore than light acceleration so you're always loosing efficiency through your torque converter.
Now you figured out the hard way why OEMs spend millions on Aerodynamics.

I measure at the fill ups and factor in 3% for the tyre size change as 100kph reads as on GPS and 103 on the dash
I found a roof rack got worse fuel economy than towing a small TRAILER I swapped a ARB roof rack for a Front Runner one and it was much quieter and more fuel ⛽ efficient
Ronny, why didn't you purchase the 2.8 Troopy? That may be the way if it handles 35's.

I find wind drag has more of an impact fuel economy than weight, mine is worse when I go away solo with swag and storage box on roof than when I go away with kids towing a light camper trailer (750kg) and nothing on roof (except rack and solar).
Hi Ronny, may I ask which brand of roof rack you are using?
The four-cylinder will be cheaper to put rego on which one is cheaper to get insured v8 or 4 cylinder lots of ways to save money

yes you are it has ATs they look similar to most brands RTs check around 3:30
@@OPTIMUS6LTR thanks and that's spot on. Cz later in the video, I only saw the MTs and was wondering what happened to ATs.
Standard guy from Perth, buys a 4x4 goes straight to the powerlines haha
Perfect place to test things, if its wet its will cross of 99% of what you will see in w.a ahahaha
If 1 or 2 ltr/h/100km are the main concern, you cant afford the car itself or running it. First thing I learned as a kid, decades ago. 🙄
35’s and 4.88s and you’ll lose your mind
The 76 is such a shorty for no good reason. If you put a bed behind the front seats (done sometimes in European builds) you should be 1.6 m tall or less. They could at least have used the length of the 78.
There's not a single touring 76 on planet earth without a city of boxes on top.
Cable ties around fuel/break lines 😥
