In battle I would probably chose to leave those two normal troops to remain (as a Lazax player). That way he would collect more influence during the collect phase. And it is cheaper to get the mechanized troops back than to buy two more normal troops. But that is also situational.. What is not situational though is that in the battle the losing side discards all their commited strategy cards while the winner can choose if he wishes to discard them or not.
I think that if you try to find Twilight Imperium Lite I would recommend Eclipse. Also - perhaps they did make the box bigger, but I can fit everything inside my box of Rex.
I have a silly question: I know that the box said 3-6 players, but would it be possible to have just 2 people? My wife and I have both enjoyed this review, and decided to give it a try. Thank you!
The rules don't support a 2-player game, and everything about the racial powers and system balancing has the assumption that there are at least 3 players. It seems to me that having only 2 player wouldn't be as much fun, but if you guys want to try it, you're certainly welcome to house-rule it however you want. It's your game, after all.

Not in spirit, in actuality. FFG wanted to remake Dune, but couldn't get the license, so they re-skinned it for Twilight Imperium.
