  • A big thank you to all those who have followed, viewed and commented on the previous 6 month video 'dump' of series' 2 - 4 of Who Dares Wins! Sadly I don't have any recordings of the complete first series but I do have the very first episode, after the pilot (which I wasn't in) - Here is my very first sketch on the show to a slightly confused audience who had never really seen anything like this before and didn't quite know what to make of it. We are all feeling our way somewhat but 'policing of the miners strikes' and 'spycops' are covered here and a slightly clumsy attempt at the breaking of the fourth wall, with an equally uncomfortable Martin Hawkins our head cameraman giving the performance of his life! #whodareswins #sketchcomedy #vintagecomedy #comedy #classiccomedy #the80s #comedysketch #80s #funny #80scomedy #spycops #minersstrike

    You were / are a brilliant actress, Julia. For what it's worth, I think you should've been a huge star. I guess you'll just have to make do with being highly talented. x

    Whilst researching something else entirely, I stumbled across this interesting snippet from The Sun (not a reliable source, I know, but bear with me) dated May 12th, 1982 -
    'ITV is planning a new LIVE satire show on the lines of the BBC's hit series Not The Nine O'Clock News. The programme is called QWERT - after the first five letters on a typewriter - and will feature four presenters, including a girl. Writers Colin Bostock-Smith and Laurie Rowley have already been recruited from the Not team. The show is part of a new package of light entertainment planned by ITV next year.'
    Was this a (very) early incarnation of Who Dares Wins, or something else entirely?

      Oo I don't know - it could have been as Colin and Laurie both worked on WDW at some point. I was inivited in to the BBC in 1978 I think it was to meet with Mel and Griff and Rowan to talk about a new comedy show (I'd been 'the girl' in a One Man comedy show that Rowan did whilst at Oxford with Howard Goodall providing the music and songs) but I was too busy trying to be a 'serious' actress at the time and said no 😂 - I'm glad I came to my senses and stopped being so bloomin precious. I was scouted by Rory and Jimmy whilst at the Ed fringe in 1977 who were on the look out for a comedy actor who could sing and that's probably how I ended up in WDW - weird 'sliding doors' moments in one's life

      @@julia_hills I played the Edinburgh Fringe once. I was in the room above the room above a pub. I got all the stragglers who couldn't get a decent seat and the two (much better) shows going on downstairs. After about twenty minutes I could see I was going down like a ton of bricks so I took the handful of punters to a nearby fish and chip shop, bought them all some chips, thanked them for coming, and went back to my hotel alone but happy.
      Before you ask why I didn't make a serious go of the comedy thing, the answer is very simple - I wasn't funny.

    Was this broadcast live?

    • @julia_hills
      @julia_hills  21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Initially it was broadcast live and I think this episode was but then Channel 4 got nervous and lawyers were involved in an 'as live' performance on the Friday that then went out on the Saturday just in case we said anything libellous on the day 😬
