Dmitri would be a sensation in this role. But then, when isn't he? The mere presence of such a star raises the temperature of the whole performance. Sumi Jo is excellent here, as always.
Dimitri.
My God! How difficult it must be to be a professional singer. Everyone's always comparing you to the best sounds you've ever made and the best sounds ANYONE ever made. I think the performance is lovely. Thanks.
Yes my friend, to be a professional singer is very difficult, but is a charming life. When the people claps you, your heart shine forever ❤️💗Francesca Maria Sassu Mezzosoprano.
Sumi Jo & Hvorostovsky - Rossini - Il Barbiere di Siviglia - 2005 "Dunque io son tu non m'inganni?" Rosina - Sumi Jo Figaro - Dmitri Hvorostovsky bravissimi e deliziosi entrambi in questo brano Rossiniano.
Well, I have to agree with you. This was the best of all of the baritones I listened singing this. Very big, and beautiful voice, but I still think that the tempo goes back a little, there's a ritard. in tempo, because I know that passage is very dificult, but fact is fact and none of them has convinced me that much, though Herlea was the best so far! Thank you for the advice!
I love Sumi, she is wonderful! I love the lightness of her voice, even though I know that some think she isn't dramatic enough. And hey, her dress, while it IS a bit silly--this is opera! Over-the-top is the name of the game!
He used to do a lot of Rigaro and Almaviva, but he's been specializing in Verdi recently... I've uploaded this duet from 1994 with Larmore, it was his role debut, amazing.
Oh, come on, it seems to me that 50% of people say "come on, he's a Verdi baritone, can't sing these light things" and the other 50% "come on, he's not a Verdi baritone, shouldn't do these heavy things". They did a wonderful Rigoletto duet at this concert, otherwise it's great fun and amazing seeing him go through the coloratura so easily. Yes, he's grown much heavier recently, but if you can say that this is not amazing, you... I don't know :-)
Bette DAvis once said that there'd never be a rivalry between two women movie stars--they'd be two clever for that. But then she said that she could give a list of rivalries between men and women actors. You have to wonder if there is similar such things between high powered baritones and sopranos like these!!
@frufruJ I think the 50% who are saying that he's a Verdi baritone and can't sing these light things (like me) are mainly referring to his *delivery*. He's singing this stuff as if it was Verdi or Onegin- he sings EVERYTHING as if it was some raging Verdi aria like Cortigiani or Eri Tu or whatever. Rossini fun duets, lyrical Mozart recitatives, whatever- everything sounds like he's a hero or epic villain running amok.
You should hear his performance of *the role* of Figaro which he sang together with Jennifer Larmore. For many, it was the best Barbiere they had ever heard. But then, again, he has been focusing on Verdi. This is a concert where he sang also Cortigiani, the Rigoletto duet and the aria from Prince Igor. Please, don't forget to see things in context, or have you never been to a concert?
Fantastic, what a lovely performance! Pray, is there a video recording of the complete Barber of Seville with Hvorostovsky singing Figaro? What else did, if anything, did Hvorostovsky sing during this concert, and will you upload it? Thank you so much for sharing this with us! :D
Figraro was originally for a rather lower baritone just as Rosina was orginally for a mezzo. On early recordings of the Largo most of the baritones skip the high Gs. Later the barber was sung by heavy Verdi types like Ruffo, Merrill, and Ausensi. Today it's often sung by high baritones like Hampson. Hvorovtosky IMHO is just about perfect. He has the agility that is sometimes missing. His only problem is that he looks naturally aristocratic. He looks like the disguised Count not his servant.
Actually, it was supposed to be stuck in her sleeve, but I think it was a bit hot then, no sleeve available, so let's make it even spicier sticking it into the bra. Hmm! Sumi makes it even more adorable. Brava! Bravi tutti i due!
The low quality of this recording doesn't either... May I direct you to Jose Carbo (not difficult to find as well as being a very good quality recording) as a more-than convincing, virtuoso baritone in this duet.
They're great! Sumi is better here, but I prefer BErganza or Cecilia. And I haven't heard yet a baritone who convinces me vocally in those faster passages. It seems their voices are so strong and heavy that they slow down the tempo.Neither Terfel, nor Prey, nor Hvorostovsky, none of the, who are excellent baritones, convinces me in that specific place: 1:14. if you know someone who does it any better, please, notice me. But, yet, they are very good! I like Dimitri a lot!
Sumi is amazing! Dmtitri's voice, on the other hand is sounding rather dry in harmonics, which is not really usual on him. Also, I believe that his voice is a little bit too heavy to sing Figaro... his coloratura doesn't really come out that easily.
wow, Rossini is really not Hvorostovsky. Just like Mozart's comical operas. He's a great singer for Verdi and Russian repertoire, but he simply doesn't have a single bit of humor or buffo quality. I mean- Figaro isn't Rigoletto. He shouldn't look like he was about to take out an axe and beat someone up. I mean, just take his 'Gia! Era scritto!' part. It's like he was singing 'She wrote the letter! We're doomed and everyone will die!'
I disagree. Most heavy baritones can't do this passage work - hear Merrill or Ausensi. I'm sorry now that I skipped hearing him do this role when I had the chance a couple years ago.
NO..... anche se la grande musica di Rossini li fa' sembrare bravi..... dono niente in confronto a chi li a preceduti....... manca l'intenzione giusta, manca una buona e Chiara dizione....... non ci sento Anima ma solo una mera esecuzione di notte

Sumi Jo sounds so fresh. Sumi Jo is born at the feast of Sancta Caecilia Romana and Hvorostovsky has died at the same day.

Très agréable : deux jolies voix !
Haha, this Figaro is SO aware, just how much Rosina depends on him. And then - "Un biglietto ? Eccolo quà":) And, Sumi is superb (Hvorostovsky too:))

Absolutely extraordinary voice. And her Mozart recordings...awesome. Let`s forgive these ridiculous dresses she wears :-)
gustopheles, you have great taste.
Oh, come on, it seems to me that 50% of people say "come on, he's a Verdi baritone, can't sing these light things" and the other 50% "come on, he's not a Verdi baritone, shouldn't do these heavy things". EXQUISITO DUO
Can you imagine if she would have sung or recorded with Pavarotti?
Just look up the version with Larmore on TH-cam, but if he's not your cup of tea in Rossini, not even that can change that ;-)
Best wishes

Try listening to Peter Mattei. he is pretty good
does anybody think as well that he does sometimes have almost the same kind of smile like Alan Rickman? or am I alone?
Sumi Jo is way above Mr Hvorostovsky.....stylistically I mean !
Sumi Jo: "Come on! Let's have some fun!" =P
Dmitri Hvorostovsky: "I'm boring"
@piasecznik Exactly at 'Gia! Era scritto!' I think it's hilaaarious! So funny! If you can't read the hyperbole, don't criticize it :-)))
she specializes in coloratura repertoire, he doesnt.
