I have to admit I like this car way better than any of the other super fuel-efficient sub-compacts out there today. Still, its hard to wrap my head around the fact that it weighs a whopping 1000 pounds more than the original Honda CRX HF.

This car proves that even with less power you can have fun!
I'm driving this one for 3 1/2 years and I love it! Sure....a few secs faster to 60 would be cool, but its not necessary.
There is actually no road or highway without tempolimits where I'm living and so is no Racetrack.
But the car feels a lot faster than it is. I really enjoy driving and have a lot of fun with it! The handling is so precise and sharp. And I love that driven in sports mode, everything feels and sounds like...well...the best sports mode ever ^^
And for those who think it needs to be faster, theres a Turbokit from Jackson Racing, developed with HONDA. Whith it you can power it up to 160-200hp and go 0-60 in 5.5-6.5 secs.
Its quite affordable (~5000$) and I've read that its a "set it and forget it-kit", which means you don't need to cut or screw anything when mounting it and the kit comes with full Hondata ecu programming and drives like OEM with a lot more torque...
....can't wait to get it ^^

Underrated is correct. People judged it too soon thinking it was just bad at being a hybrid and worse at being a sports car. It is like a CRX HF in that is it sporty and frugal and still fun, not so much the CRX Si successor that people hoped for, but that could be coming by 2017. The CRZ is still a positive experience for the Honda enthusiast. I love the interior and dashboard, the shifter and pedals in the EX, and if you skip the overpriced navigation it's cheap, especially used. I really like the 2013- update.

They tried. It was originally intended to be released in hybrid and sport (k series) trims. The k20 version didnt have enough space between the rad/rad support for crash testing purposes. Good news is that since they originally intended for a k motor to go in they are swappable.

**From an owner**. Bought a 6 speed CRZ last year as a replacement daily driver from a 2001 Honda Prelude, I love the fact its super affordable to run, gas is 25-30 dollars to fill the tank, It has great storage because of the hatch, it can corner extremely well. But it's pretty slow (but still plenty fast for daily driving), though that's a good thing in some ways, first! You will have a hard time getting a speeding ticket, Second! It enhances any sports cars you own as a weekend toy. It makes your sports car feel so much faster. In short this car is a really good buy if you need an efficient, fun vehicle and don't care about top speed or drag racing.

      +Robert Bruin 2018 a TURBO with 280HP! - OH SHIT!
While more and more automakers are expanding their hybrid platforms, Honda is going against the grain by taking a hybrid model and transforming it to a gasoline-only car.
Honda has announced that the next generation CR-Z will be running a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Experts are expecting that Honda will use the same 2.0-liter, 280 horsepower VTEC that currently powers the Civic Type-R.
The car will most likely debut in 2017 as a model for the following year.
This will be the first time the CR-Z has been a gas-only car - ever since its debut in 2010, the CR-Z has featured a hybrid platform. The 2015 model (pictured above) is running a 1.5-liter gas engine and electric motor with a combined output of 130 horsepower.
Critics have complained that this powertrain is too weak for a sporty compact. And the coupe’s average 31 mpg is not enough of a fuel savings to justify the car’s watered-down performance.
Sales have been as lackluster as the car: Honda posted less than 3,600 sales in the U.S. last year for the CR-Z.
But Honda is betting that a turbocharged inline-four can get the CR-Z back on the right track.
“The two reasons that forced Honda to phase it out [in Europe and Australia], namely its weak street cred and lack of performance thanks to its ho-hum hybrid power unit, have been addressed.
“The new coupe will be a force to reckon with,” a Honda source told Car and Driver.

I own a CRZ. For a 2 seater, it's got TONS of trunk space. And as far as "busy" dash goes, it may be "busy" to someone who sits in it for the first 10 minutes but considering the overall amount of time you spend in your car, calling a dash "busy" is like critiquing mornings are too bright from the first 10 seconds you open your eyes. Base CRZ is 20k.

I bought one of these for my wife, and she absolutely loves it. As a guy that's driven nothing but 350+ HP sports cars for the last 15 years, I was a bit skeptical. But after sitting behind the wheel, I was actually really surprised! It may be slow by a racer's standards, but it's.......still fast. It's hard to explain. You never feel like you're crawling forward, inch by inch. It's peppy enough to "feel" fast, especially in Sport Mode. And for those of you living in snowy winter climates, let me tell you....this thing is an absolute SOLDIER! I expected problems, given its size, but it plows through the snow with zero trouble.

I never understood people driving overpowered, gas-guzzling cars in public streets. When you said "it's a car that has enough" then that's a good thing. It has power, and is eco friendly. That's a good thing.

I just bought my 2012 CR-Z and I instantly fell in love with it at the test drive. Went from a gas guzzling Charger to a beautiful Hybrid.

    • @oHeihei
      @oHeihei 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

+MsTiauna27 I went from a Jeep to mine! I was at the dealer with my mom when she was test driving a CRV (which she ended up buying). I test drove the V6 Accord since that was my original first choice, then got in the CRZ for shits and giggles. Though it wasn't as fast, the CRZ was a lot more fun to drive, fit me more, and slightly used CRZs were more in my price range. The car instantly became a dream commuter car after the test drive so I found one on craigslist a few days later and bought it. Such a good car that I hope to own forever.

    • @efren9223
      @efren9223 9 ปีที่แล้ว

+Warheroguy I'm looking to buy one too. What price, year, and miles did you get it for? Does the AC absolutely have to stay shut off when on stops?

    • @oHeihei
      @oHeihei 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

E Cabotaje Late 2013 I got my 2012 base crz manual for $14,000 and about 25K miles and also was in excellent condition. Though now they can be found for about 10-12K and maybe even lower :) I've seen some 2011 EX models for 8K with 70K+ miles (which isn't really a lot of miles since it's a Honda). So right now it's a really good buy, even the updated 2013+ models.
Whenever you come to a stop, put the car into neutral, and the car shuts off because of start/stop everything works as normal. Like if you were to get in a car and turn the key just part way to "on". The AC is only effected if you turn the car into Eco mode where the car tries to be as economic as possible. I always keep it in sport, however. And the start/stop is never a bother, by the way. Many are concerned about it, but the car engine turns on faster than I can take my foot off the brake, and put the car into first gear. Hopefully that helps, if that was you meant by your question :)

Like dude if it's cheap plastic just say it is without a bummed out gloomy face that just bums out people that are looking for reviews ...... Like no shit it's not such an upscale car so then why even bother to just downgrade it like a price of shit ...... Got mine for a Month now and done around 1000km. It`s the 2011 model w 70k down. Bought it for a mere 8k Euros.
I must say that this car has a lot of potential and I love it. People consider it slow because it has a small engine and low torque but it jut isn`t. This car is not a highway reaver but it`s still pretty quick. The motor revs up to 7k really fast and when you set off from still stand the electric motor kicks in and just launches you out with no rollout I mean NO rollout(if you can use the pedals the right way). I don`t think I saw any common cars in traffic that sets off faster than the crz(maybe full electrics or dunno) making him a fun zoomer in the city and curvy hill roads.
Reving up to around 5-6k you feel like in a movie and hear the engine finally roar up, it goes up to 50 kmh really fast and does around 8 sec a 100 kmh in sport mode. The drivetrain and handling is just superb thinking that this is no sports car. This might not be a real torque sports car but it revs up like hell and then you have your desired fun. It goes up to 150 in 4th gear arund 5k rpm and max speed 200 so it`s quicker than you think. At least quicker than BMW 116 or basic coopers( as said this thing CAN rev up). If you like gocart you will love this. We went with a friend and his 170 hp 2.5 E46(automatic) on the forest track and this car was just as fast and much sharper, whilst on the highway the crz falls behind over 160kmh.

Thanks for the review, I see a good future for you as a auto jurno, a bit rough here and there, but you’re on the right path (from a fellow auto jurno).
Honda sells CR-Z where I live, but it’s a bit too expensive due to tax and regulation (two door cars incurs higher tax), it’s about US$45K. I had a very short time test driving the car but I just loved it. It’s not fast enough or frugal enough, but it strikes a good balance of both. It’s enough to scoot around and it’s also fun enough to be thrifty with fuel. Where I live, traffic is horrendous, urban speed average can get me about 20-30 KpH with 50% of the time idling. Highway speed average is not that good also with about 60-70 KpH with maybe a dash of acceleration up to 120 KpH before I hit another slow crawl. I test drove a Prius too, and compared to the CR-Z, it’s just damn lazy. Superior mileage, but damn it, feels like driving a boat.
The CR-Z is perfect for people who want to get into the hybrid scene but didn’t want to drive a boring ass hybrid. This is definitely my retirement car.

I test drove a couple 2011's and I liked them a lot. However, for me, the most fun for the dollar was a 2001 MIata. Miata was $6,000 compared to $15,000 for the CR-Z.

baby nsx. We didn't see it before but now I do. The new NSX employs the same features with the gas and electric motor and here we get a taste of that in the CRZ. Thank you Honda! Just made my mind up on my next purchase. I was looking at 2013+ CRZ, used Mini Cooper S, Fiat 500 abarth, 2013+ Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0, and lastly 2010+ Gen. Coupe V6.
Honda has better track record with reliability, and these are practically being given away by dealers. The only drawback is no rear seat. I know it's entirely too small for an American adult (glass is too low and no leg room) but it looks nicer and if I ever needed to carry more than one individual besides myself it would give me that option. I mean the Scion iQ fits 3 adults and one child comfortably and it's smaller.
I drove a 2015 model yesterday VERY briefly but I liked it. the lack of rear seats (I've been aware since its debut) isn't that bad in actuality. The car never feels too small either. It felt just right for me. I didn't have enough time or space to really get on it but it seemed liked adequate acceleration and made a nice noise after 4k rpm. It handles nicely and feels almost tossable with a fair amount of stability. Basically it doesn't feel like the rear can kick out (oversteer) like the Del Sol and CR-X. It could benefit from better tires and maybe a strut tower brace bar or better coilovers.
The dashboard is VERY busy when you first get in. The model I drove had the standard radio like this one and it's just so much to look at and so much is going on. Too many colors and lights emit from the gauge pod. I would use the dimmer switch to find my comfort level if I purchased one. Waaaaay too busy, but I did get use to it so there's that.
I didn't look at the trunk area but I let the parcel shelf down (our vegistale rear seats) and it's not very deep but a couple duffle bags for a weekend trip would be feasible.
Rearward visibility initially was a shock! I'm not use to looking out such a small glass. Yes the glass on the hatch is there but you only see the sky. The smaller up right window on the trunk is what you see out of. Took some getting use to I.e mirror adjustment and I was fine. It's reminiscent of a Toyota Prius or Hyundai Veloster.
That's my mini review I guess lol I hope this helps future buyers as well.

I couldn’t find a CR-Z when it was finally time, so I settled on a Veloster Turbo. I left with a 2011 BMW 328i coupe instead lol. Ultimately I wanted a bmw anyhow but was trying to go the more normal and responsible route. I do not regret my purchase. I’ve put 70k miles on the bimmer and it’s been okay.

    Really liked this video.
I am a huge fan of all the different variations on electric power train that are available these days. I truly agree about how the CR-Z really is a great car that unfortunately turned out to be a dud for Honda. I admire the ingenuity that Honda put forth in this project combining a 120 hp engine with an electric motor for instance assistance, without having to downshift? I mean that's thinking forward.. and this car came out a long time ago now. How amazing would it be if they focused more on that product and gave it a stronger battery! I would stop whatever I am doing and trade in my '08 5-Speed Civic EX Coupe and buy that CR-Z immediately.

Okey, it's an old video, but just wanna put down my opinion anyways.
So I own 2011 Honda CR-Z, it's my first car, and I live in UK so big block V8s aren't very common (unfortunately). So I was looking for unique car tbh, and people drive fiestas everywhere here, so obviously, I wanted to stand out.
Anyways, there is my review, I wanna make video for a while now but it comes hard for me hah
2011 CR-Z, is it good? Yes. Is it fast? No. Is it cool and quick? Yes!
First thing I wanna touch on, plastics. I sat in both, CRZ, GT86 and in 350Z, And I gonna be honest, my Zs feels least cheap, and it's made out of very decent materials. Plastic on the doors feels hard, but dash, leather door parts, gear knob, etc, feels pretty good and looks good too, it's not super cheap, it feels solid, and that's more or less what you expect from a cheap small sports car, quality is there for sure, when compared to GT86, it's at least decade forward in quality... GT86s plastic feel so cheap, it's hard to even look at them 😂 it's better then 350Zs interior too imo.
Power, not gonna lie, if I could afford to drive 370Z, I would buy 370Z. CR-Z is slow unfortunately, it's enough for everyday driving and for curvy roads, but when it comes to straight line performance, it's lacking, especially when you gonna drive something faster, like 300HP Skyline or something. For first car tho, enough power to have fun, not get in trouble and not crash, but be careful, cuz it suffers from lift off oversteer, which can be dangerous when you don't know what you doing and can scare the fuck outta you sometimes. Handling, it's mint, many people say it's better in Twisties then FN2 Type-R, and Z actually beats it at tight tracks! Definitely it's one of the best handling cars ever. It's nice and stiff, modes are amazing, sport mode, as mentioned in video, changes the character of the car so much, it feels like you driving other car, it's super responsive, to the point when it's hard to drive it in cities, and it just teases you into pressing that throttle harder, which can actually get you in a lot of trouble if you not careful 😂
Styling, it's mint, people either love it or hate it, you look at it and you know it's a modern CR-X.
Car has it's own, very unique spirit that people don't realise, because they don't drive it right, it's one of those cars that when you use them right, and you sell it, you gonna always regret it and eventually you will buy another one, I know way too many owners that are like that. It's so unique you can't just forget it.
It's true tho, it's quiet as fuck, and needs exhaust, intake noise isn't too bad, but new intake would make great difference, bigger throttle body and coilovers with spacers, unless you wanna superchage it, not much things to make it faster.
Definitely amazing car, it always makes you wanna go out and drive. I'm currently thinking about 370Z because more power, but this car... It's something else.

I'm pretty sure this engine is very similar to the car I drive, a 2009 Honda Fit. I recently got a cold air intake for the Fit and it makes it sound wonderful. It's still quiet on the highway, but when you step on it and get into VTEC it really screams. I'm sure there'd be something similar for the CRZ, if people bought one and wanted a bit more sound.

For a relatively inexpensive car, Hondas are the way to go. My dad's 1986 Civic manual lasted for just under 25 years. I'm driving our 2000 Honda Accord manual and there hasn't been any bad mechanical issues.

The CR-Z was fun, but when it was sold alongside the second generation Honda Fit Sport which wasn't much slower (actually, basically tied-- magazines were running around 8.3 seconds or so for the manuals between the two). Fit had back seats, more soft touch surfaces, better cargo capacity, etc. There simply wasn't a point in the CR-Z as it was. Fit's usually posted better than advertised economy, even at the magazines, again hitting the CR-Z. Don't get me wrong, I love a fun slow car (the Chevy Spark manuals are way slower and still a hoot in my eyes... hell, I've had fun in the CVT if you can believe that).
The updated CR-Z not only had the little boost button, but a slightly retuned suspension that gave it a bit better rotation, and gave it a darker interior trim. They are fun in general-- sweet shifter, low slung seating position, nice turn in and rotation, and the back end feels less floaty than the Fit. These feel a bit more like the last generation Celica GT, honestly.
There were so many more practical and cheaper econoboxes out at the same time as the CR-Z, which weren't much slower (and some quicker), it simply wasn't worth the added cost for such a compromised package. Much like a BRZ or FRS, the CR-Z had quite a bit of road noise and compromises in terms of back seat/lack there of, but with even less benefit (it wasn't a dedicated, balanced sport coupe). One could get a manual Focus hatchback (not even an ST) and have a full second shaved off the 0-60, a still sweet chassis, throaty soundtrack, and mid-30's fuel economy.
If someone is looking at this era as a one-car used purchase, a second (or even third gen) Fit Sport, Fiesta manual, Mazda2/Scion iA (different cars but similar ethos), even the Yaris SE (which upgraded suspension, brakes, steering rack, seats-- way more than the aesthetics the Fit Sport did)-- any of those can be just as fun while being more useable as a one-car solution.
And if you have one of those cars already (I have a modified Toyota Echo manual coupe, which thanks to being light holds its own against those cars listed above in many ways), so even as a second car/fun toy, why go for something so similar? At that point get the Miata/ToyoBaru, or something else along those lines. I was looking for a second car alongside the Echo, cars like a '16 Mustang V6 coupe, the ToyoBaru's, or even a second gen TT 3.2, with the 328i Wagon being very much on the list-- a 128i ended up coming through my work and I jumped on that. And I love it and the Echo for fun in different ways. Loving the light analog econoboxes for their rawness, though, the CR-Z is simply nowhere near where it should have been to be compelling, then or now, even though it really is a fun experience, it's a fun experience I would drive, but not buy.
We'll see how Honda does with a sporty hybrid yet again with the upcoming Prelude, but IIRC manual is still an "if," which is a shame.

Good review from some one who spent some time understanding the car. Funny almost every fault you mentioned are ones that I first addressed on my crz. Rear sway bar to deal with the body roll, and a sweet HKS exhaust to make it sound "sportier." If you figure out how to manage the electric boost you'll have even more fun.
