The capture of Toretsk is more impressive than the capture of Sudzha in my humble opinion. From both an economic and strategic point of view I guess these Toretsk coal mines are much more valuable. I am quite puzzled why Ukraine didn't prevent the collapse of Toretsk. Of course, our media still says.. "Russians claim to have captured Toretsk, while it is a fact that they did after all". Kursk remains a PR offensive showing after each huge loss that they can still capture some land in the Russian Federation as well, but the trade off between these two pieces of land is obvious.

@deep_singh8055 that can only happen if they are allowed to properly hit targets in Russia. Far easier to grind down the economy than fight to take back their territory. Unfortunately trump is a buffoon who is way out of his depth. For instance, instead of adding the 10% tariff on Chinese goods for no sensible reason, he should have linked the tariff to Chinese firms supplying Russia. This punishment could then be followed by threats of higher tariffs if China dared to not stop trading with Russia. India could also have been threatened the same. Zelenskyy has clearly never served in the military (yet he seems to think himself qualified to make military decisions that put tens of thousands of lives at stake). The Russians DON'T WANT to push Ukraine out of Kursk. It is very useful to Russia to keep them there. There are no strategic vulnerabilities in Kursk (Ukraine hasn't come close to the nuclear power plant), so there is nothing strategic there to defend. But the resources diverted to Kursk means there are fewer resources that can protect the line of contact in Donbass. Since the incursion, Russia's advance has sped up, more Ukrainians have been lost, and fewer Russians have been put at risk. It has been a gift to Russia.

From the spin by Ukrainian guests that I hear on French TV, Kursk is growing in importance to them. They are talking up its significance as a bargaining chip. They point to the fact that Ukraine is still there after 6 months ("Russians have failed to expel us"). If negotiations were to actually begin, these arguments might have some force but, given the apparent fact that Russia has no intention of initiating negotiations, these appear to be idle words.

Thank you Putin for the new year presents of Kurakhove and Torestky. You have delivered on all your promises sir. Thank you so much
Do you think perhaps Trump is letting this play out whilst he gets his cabinet approved and also the longer they chew on this it will be more and more widely accepted that the proposals are non starters.
Keeps the crazies guessing while the work by Trumps administration gets done and his people confirmed. Stay on the Trump wagon its going to be one hell of a ride. Hopefully Vance will be the next President to finish the work Trump started.
Are you referring to the proposals that T himself made? If so, he's letting this play out for different reasons.
It seems plausible.
The Russian military has thwarted a Ukrainian effort to continue their offensive in Kursk Region, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Friday.
Combat in the area intensified on Thursday, when the Ukrainian military mounted a major attack to the northeast of the town of Sudzha, the largest settlement controlled by Kiev in the area. The attack involved dozens of armored vehicles and hundreds of troops.
A new video released by the Russian Defense Ministry on Friday shows one of the Ukrainian convoys, which appeared to largely consist of Western-supplied armored cars, come under artillery fire. The convoy deployed a smokescreen and attempted to hide in a wooded area, yet multiple vehicles were struck, the footage shows.
Ukrainian troops advanced in the open in large convoys, led by minesweeping and breacher vehicles. They were promptly detected and subjected to artillery and air strikes, and were also targeted by a multitude of assorted drones.
According to the latest estimates by the Russian military, the Ukraine lost over 200 servicemen during the unsuccessful attack on Ulanok and Cherkasskya Konopelka. At least eight tanks, five infantry fighting vehicles and over 30 other pieces of armor were destroyed. The attacking forces also lost three engineering breacher vehicles, a bridgelayer and other support equipment. - RT
"The attack involved dozens of armored vehicles and hundreds of troops."
Which shows you that RU estimates of 50,000+ UA losses in Kursk are pure bunkum....These are not large force on force engagements like in WWII...
Russian sources (re)confirm Ukraine controls Cherkasskaya Konopel'ka and Fanaseevka. Battles south of Makhnovka to reach the Psel river are expected.
"Our units are not in Fanaseevka. The enemy is there. And this success gives the Ukrainian Armed Forces the opportunity to try to clear the remaining part of Makhnovka and the plantings to the south of our forces. And then try to reach Plekhovo. Which will completely nullify all our successes here since September. True, the Psel River is helping us here for now. But if there is an attack from the Sumy region (and it is quite possible), it will not save us."
Thanks for the work you do. Invaluable analysis and commentary.
LOL. You not right in the head. You fit right in here.
On the validity of Russian numbers wasn’t pop of the Russian general dismissed very largely because his realistic numbers were were on welcome to drop them off who preferred in accurate optimistic numbers to realistic ones. The Russians are certainly not immune to this sort of thing themselves.

Hello all
What is good about all this is that at least various leaders are talking about peace and ceasetion of hostilities of course how it works out is another issue.
By the way Ruskaya Konopelka literally means russian weed
Russian Cannabis
No. Конопля is the weed. Konopelka is a word of polish origin

I was talking to my grandmother about the war when she pulled out a map of Ukraine and asked me where things were happening. I looked for Pokrovsk on the map but couldn’t find it, realizing that it wasn’t a large enough settlement to actually be on the map.
I was trying to find entire "Captured" by Ukrainian territory of Kursk, and find out it was a size of a small dots on Russian map. Meanwhile the Ukrainian Graveyards gains more area in 3 years, than the Kursk territory they are "controlling".
@Bean.Coy.In.Places-12 Don’t forget who divided Poland…
A town can be of great importance because of where it is even if it is small . Some such towns are heavily fortified and hard to take .

The world needs to hear from the Ukrainian people, not dictator Zelensky operating under martial law. Is Ukraine a democracy or authoritarian state? Latter looks closer to the truth at the moment.
Thanks much Alex. From the begining of my observ. you prove yslf wery good informated in matter.GREAT for us to make good picture on yours quality work.

How can the Ukrainian army accept this manner of doing?.
