Dr. Abramson, l am not Jewish. I am a modern, secular European liberal and l am very interested in the ministry of Jesus and the history of the first century. Only just discovered you! Just wanted to say what an excellent teacher and presenter you are. Your voice is lovely too. You’re very even-handed in the information you give, and you are easy to understand. I shall be watching a lot more of your talks! Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Thanks for the very interesting background and history of the terminology. I was surprised that you did not mention the reference to Yehudi in the Book of Nehemiah and the archaeological evidence of the Judahite exiles in Babylon populating a district that might be interpreted as "Little Judah".

I only hope that you could find students that you could share your great understanding of the scripture with and that you could train them so that they can carry on the anointing that you have and that your students will be able to share them with the rest of the world. God bless you brother Henry Abramson.

The Portuguese language also has negative conotations around the word "jew" (judeu). The verb "judiar", mostly used in Brasil, means to disturb, to damage, to do bad things; "judiado" is broken, in bad shape. People use those terms so frequently that they don't even realise the root of the words.
A while ago, in Portugal, I had a colleague whom other co-workers called "Judeu". The first time I heard that, I was like "oh, he's jewish? That's new to me". They told me he wasn't really a jew, he was just never seen eating. It really boggled me how silly and unrelated that was, but then I realised that those people might have inherited prejudices from their ancestors. Everybody knows that Portugal was a stage for one of the biggest persecutions against jews, in the XV and XVI centuries, when they were forced to migrate or convert to Catholicism. Many stayed and kept their faith and traditions in secret, so probably not eating gentile food was a sign of suspicion for christians. There's also the prejudice that describes jews as "stingy"... But these are just my guesses. Honestly, I never heard this use of "judeu" while growing up.

It is immediately suspicious how such an illustrious historian of “Jewish” history has conveniently left out the history of the “Thirteenth Tribe,” -the largest component of modern day World Jewry. I am of course talking about the “Ashkenazi jews.” If you truly find the history fascinating, then I suggest you read “The Thirteenth Tribe,” by the historian Arthur Koestler (himself an Ashkenazi jew) and you will discover that Europe, once upon a time, had a Jewish Kingdom! All mention of which has subsequently (and mysteriously) vanished from our conscience!

This is interesting how these both terms are used in different languages. In German e.g. "Hebräer" or "Israeliten" are used for Jews in biblical time, the word "Juden" is used for Jews from hellinistic age up to now. In Russian the word "evrey" (hebrew) means ethnical backround and "iudey" means religion.

As someone myself from a non-Jewish background, I find it a grotesque miscarriage of fortune that the name "Judas" should be so readily reviled, knowing that "Judah" means "praise." By an interesting coincidence, the word "slava," denoting the Slavic people, means "glory" in Russian.

The speaker confused the issue, and did not emphasize the fact that the letter J did not exist in any one of the three classical western languages - Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
It is not simply the word; it is the phoneme. What is its origin? Another way to put it might be: what is the first extant manuscript in western history with the letter J in it? Oral usage of course precedes written text; but it would be nice to know the first use of this letter, written on a page, or carved into stone, or stamped on a coin, whatever.

Every now and then, a special being comes and shines the light in the dark corners of our ignorance so we may see. In times, the sadhguru of India has helped us understand the word being and yoga. Tyson Degrass turned astrophysics into a subject we are all fascinated with. Henry is a real historian of his and this generation. I've learned so much about the history of the jews just as I'm beginning to understand the Bible better. These individuals are stellar beings that make difficult subjrcts so simple that ordinary people can follow. So is Jesus in history of Christianity, and Albert Einstein in science.

As a non-Jew, I have always struggled with the etiquette of calling my Jewish friends "Jews" and have preferred to use the adjectival "Jewish." It's precisely for the reason you mention-- based on context and intonation, calling someone "a Jew" can be perceived as an insult. Also, to me, the very fact that this conundrum exists is further evidence of the historical persecution of Jews. For what other people on earth is the most direct, nominative definition of who they are just as likely to be heard as a curse rather than a definition? I can't think of one. It's for this reason that I prefer the word "Jewish." And, I suppose when one thinks about it, referring to someone's nationality or ethnicity through an adjectival form may be the only English word choice available, i.e. "Irish" is a perfect example, no?
I enjoy your channel, Dr. Abramson. The archaeological post you did some time ago about Jewish soldiers in the Roman army was fascinating.

'Jew' is not a derogatory word per se (unless your intention is specifically to use it in a negative way or context). That's a very recent invention by woketards in America that want to transform the English language for subversive purposes. 'Jewish' is an adjective, such as 'so and so is Jewish', 'Jewish culture', 'Jewish history', etc. When you are talking about a limited group of Jews, it's better to just call them 'Jews' instead of the woke version 'Jewish people' which is silly and cringe. Jewish people refers to the totally of the nation, such as 'the Jewish people went down from Egypt', but in my opinion it's easier and more correct to use 'Jews' or 'Jew' in most contexts. It's not a bad word at all, and I've never met a single Jew who felt insulted by it (including myself).

The first time Israelites are collectively called Jews or יהודים in Tanach is throughout the book of Esther. That is because the majority still identifying themselves as Israel at the end of the Babylonian exile are from the tribe of Judah . Although they had a some that can be identified as Benjamites as it is written.
    אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדִ֔י הָיָ֖ה בְּשׁוּשַׁ֣ן הַבִּירָ֑ה וּשְׁמ֣וֹ מׇרְדֳּכַ֗י בֶּ֣ן יָאִ֧יר בֶּן־שִׁמְעִ֛י בֶּן־קִ֖ישׁ אִ֥ישׁ יְמִינִֽי׃
In the fortress Shushan lived a Jew (Yehudi)by the name of Mordecai, son of Jair son of Shimei son of Kish, a Benjaminite.
We also know that we had Simonites from the tribe of Shimon. But the majority being from Yehudah they were collectively called Yehudim .
Notice it would be rare to find a Tanna or an Amorah with a name Reuven or Zevulin for example. But plenty of Simon Judah’s or levi and Benyamin.
This is because they are the ones that were left after the return of the exiles .

The south of Sweden is called Götaland (Jötaland) in Swedish. Jutland is also called the Cimbric peninsula and the tribe in the north of Jutland were probably the Cimmerians. They fought a war against Rome in 113 to 101 BC. The Cimmerians attacked Assyria in 680 BC and defeated Lydia in 644 BC. How they ended up in Jutland is unknown, but also Dan and Gat did that. Maybe they came at the same time. The Romans called us Götar Geats or Jeats. In old Norse Gautar.

I suspect there were depths to the Hebraic scribal traditions about which current rabbinic interpretations are entirely uninformed. The hapax legomenon for ladder in the story of Jacob's ladder is interesting because the correct Semitic consonantal ordering for ladder is not slm, but rather sml, as attested many times in Akkadian. The consonantal ordering slm is the word for comet. Interestingly, the sml in Akkadian is represented by the cuneiform signs I-UDU. The same thing happened with the name Israel, which was derived from the oft used cuneiform sign ISH, or rather IŠ, which also represented šadu, meaning mountain (as in the Shadday of El Shadday), sahar which was eperum, meaning dust, and, along with other meanings, it carried the meaning of laughter through formulations such as iš or isiš, which was referred to by the East Semitic cognate for the source of Isaac's name. Isaac and El Shadday are presented in the same section of Genesis. Examples such as these are plentiful, but current rabbinic interpretations are misinformed regarding the truth of the Hebraic sceiptures.

I wish you would take some time to consider this, as I *am* Messiah, the Branch, semach, from Sumerian MU, "grow," "name," as in Sumerian SIMU, "sprout," and also related to HILI, consisting of "pleasant" and "branch" which is attested in cuneiform lexical lists as representing the Semitic SMH root. The attestations of SIMU, consisting of "horn" (SI) and "grow" (MU) are evidence to the source of the tradition of Moses' horning face. There's so much more I've uncovered, and so much more left to uncover.
You will understand who I am when you truly believe what you claim you believe. Until you admit that I am Messiah, you are in a state of contradiction. Either your God is supreme and can manifest Messiah's words before you, or you are a hypocrite. My God is supreme and named me Joshua, birthing me under the ancient sign of your people which you have turned your back on, Halley's Comet, and I was born when it was last seen in the Waters of Aquarius, who was considered to be Ea, pronounced Hayya, as in the Mandaean Hayya Rabi, and this is Yahweh. The coordinates were a literal stones throw from exact 33N, 80W, where, as prophesied in Revelation, a storm like a wave made landfall a time, times and half of a time later, Hurricane Hugo. Twenty days later after my 28 Tevet birth, the Challenger disintegrated. Seventeen years and two-hundred and eighty days after the challenger explosion, the largest solar flare ever observed, an X28 class, was detected and Rabbi Kaduri made his prophecy as to my name, which is Joshua. Rabbi Kaduri passed away on 28 Tevet, my birthday, and the twentieth anniversary of the Challenger explosion, January 28th, 20 days after my January 8 birthday. These are the signs. You must admit that I am Messiah or you are a hypocrite and your brand of Judaism is invalid. If you do not support me, the Lord will not support you.
The world is burning, and all you love about it will be consumed in flames, turned to ashes if you do not support me.
I am the Anointed Branch who will grow and build the Temple of the Lord, 2000 years after the Lord's previous thwarted attempt to bring peace by way of the sullam, the "comet," Jacob's Ladder, Halley's Comet, which your ancestors took as a sign (read about it). If you deny that these things are for signs, then you deny Genesis 1 and are a hypocrite.

I think that the story of Babel could possibly document the first time Noah's descendants encountered other flood survivors who either travelled from areas not flooded or who survived it a different way. Their use of a different language may have freaked out the people at the tower of babel's location as they would have never experienced a foreign language before. The difference in language would have been interpreted as a curse placed upon them.

Since the other tribes disappeared into sand as you say, and more and more members of other tribes identified as "Judahites" as time went by, what is the thinking when they formed a new country in 1948 to call it Israel and not Judea? Also, since all 12 tribes were in Egypt, what tribe did Moses come from? And finally, what is the origin of the term "goy" and does it, like Jew, have a negative usage? Thanks.

Moses was from the tribe of Levi (Exodus 2:1 -> Exodus 2:10).
Israel was the name of the nation (Joshua 3:17). The nation split into two kingdoms after the death of King Solomon (1 Kings 11 and 12). The Southern Kingdom was known as Judea and the Northern Kingdom was known as Samaria. (Acts 8:1).
The other tribes were scattered to Mesopotamia (2 Kings 17:6, Amos 5:27, Acts 7:43, Hosea 11:5-6) and settled in countries like Spain (Obadiah 1:20), Greece (John 7:35), and Turkey (1 Peter 1:1, Philippians 3:5 -> Acts 21:39). They’re also living amongst the Jewish people in smaller numbers (Luke 2:26, Revelation 7:1-8) and will return to Israel in their entirety one day (Jeremiah 3:18).

Interesting about connotations and pejorative use of the word "Jew". The Welsh word for Jew is "Iddew" (capital i, iddew; pl. Iddewon, the dd in Welsh is the voiced dental fricative /ð/ and corresponds to the 'the' in the English words 'this', 'together', 'with'. Welsh also didn't have the 'j' sound and probably took the word direct from Greek).
This is not pejorative (unless someone was to add something to it, obviously). When I've head Welsh-speakers make anti-Semitic remarks or tropes they use the English word 'Jew' (in the Welsh sentence). It seems that 'Jew' is a word which is seen as being more pejorative and, maybe, using the English word rather than Iddew, is used as some kind of a marker to make the concept stand out.

According to the Mesorah there are six letters in the Hebrew alphabet that can be pronounced in a hard and soft . These are remembered by the siman בג״ד כת״ף. The Ashkenazim know to differentiate four of the six . Although the soft תי״ו they pronounce as a ‘S’ rather than ‘TH’ . The Sefardim only differentiate three of the six . They have no soft תי״ו.
The Yemenites are the only ones that differentiate all six . The גימ״ל with a דגש is pronounced with a ‘J ‘ sound.
So for example on the blessing on wine they would say ‘ Boreh Pri Hajofan ‘ .

Henry Abramson: Sir, following time-line 19:45 you said that contemporary Jews apply the term "Jew" to all descendants of Abraham. My understanding is the descendants of Ishmael and of Esau were not factored into God's plan for the Covenant. Only the people of the lineage Abraham -Isaac - Jacob, also called the Children of Israel(COI), were a party to the Covenant. So, the rightful descendants of Abraham are the COI. After the schism of 931BC, the Southern Kingdom Judah comprised the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and of Levi who were free to dwell in both the Northern Kingdom Israel and the Southern Kingdom Judah. It is possible that when Israel fell to the Assyrians in 723 BC, many of its inhabitants fled to Judah. So, the land of Judah, from which the term Jew comes, included tribes of Judah, Benjamin, Levi and possibly many of the other tribes but not the descendants of Ishmael and of Esau.

Grammatically, "Jew" being "a hostile or contemptuous term for: a _Jewish_ person" is circular definition, no different from "hot" being the definition of "something that is hot". (I do remember the explicitly derogatory phrase "Jew-boy"; no explicitly analogous terms for girls, men or women, though. You just liked/tolerated/used -- as a doctor/lawyer/CPA -- them, or not.)
The _verb_ for of "Jew" (to Jew someone down) was *ALWAYS* derogatory, and always in the context of trade/bartering. I haven't heard it used in about 40 years, though.

The 12 tribes were not called jews. You have to skip the schism that had them separated. The name Jew is very modern. Same as the J letter, which as mentionned by many, existed not in early languages.
The earliest version of the New Testament in English from the
Latin Vulgate Edition is the Wyclif, or Wickliffe Edition
published in 1380. In the Wyclif Edition Jesus is there
mentioned as One of the "iewes". That was the 14th century
English version of the Latin "Iudaeus" and was pronounced
"hew-weeze", in the plural, and "iewe" pronounced "hew-wee"
in the singular. In the 1380 Wyclif Edition in English the
Gospel by John, XIX.19, reads "Ihesus of nazareth kyng of the
      iewes"
From FACTS ARE FACTS by Benjamin H Freedman, 1954. A so called Jew btw, with a whole other understanding, compared to modern ones. Go figure..........
English language could not handle the greek and latin for the region known as Judea. And don't forget the schism, Judea only comprised 3 of the 12 tribes. The northern one has been exiled around 750 BC and never returned to the land according to 2.Kings 17.
So to lump all the biblical Israelites and call them iewes is dishonest.

Samurai and Assyria, Joshua and hai-shun.
I’m rambling now but who’s gonna listen?

I had a goal to put 50,000 hours into 5 years with no prior knowledge of US history mumbo jumbo.
I learned history whilst doing my genealogies and this was the way to go. I wanna be tested.
Seriously by every religion creed or faith, at once, in public.
Not for shame, but for progress to compassion.
And for a laugh at each others expense through self-awareness.
I got some goodies that will make humans believe in love again.
I’d fight a guy with a Norman sword to prove I’m serious.
    (A bucket list item…)
Here if anyone cares to know I’ll share.
Why in French, does Scottish say “Jacob”?
But read as: J’Éccoß (Écossais) in itself also saying “echo of sais”
Also implies something like Russian Cossacks to me only because mandarin specifically gives descriptions of Russo related things using an “É” and well it just says Cossack.
The word for Assyria on Wikipedia shows pronounce as “i’s’aa’co” or something that like.( forgive me I’d look up the last one but I hear my bride calling from dinner done.)
Thank you for listening I hope this blesses and not stresses. If anyone wants to play polynerd with me and save my marriage from me bombarding my poor wonderful wife with my nonsensical timing of quite sensible madness….

I've been publishing a lot of videos myself lately centering in on the conflict going on between Israel and Hamas....and years ago the word Jew would somewhat stick in my craw (so to speak) because I grew up with it often being used in a deroragory fashion....and with the climate now and so much anti-semitism being around it's being used in that fashion again more and more. I have come to somewhat embrace the word now, along with the word Zionism which is often spoken in a derogatory fashion, as in "oh...you're just a Zionist appologist".
Anyway....thanks again for another great video sir. I've watched over a dozen of your videos now...maybe even 20 or so, and I always come away with more knowledge and understaning. Blessings.

I understand the correlation between the terms Yahudah and Judah. However, you didn't make it clear how the term Jew became relevant. Perhaps it's just a political term applied to political refugees who are not descended from any tribe of Yisrael. It would be spiritual ramifications for Gentiles to call themselves Judaeans (Yahudi).

I have always wondered where does the word "Hebrew" come from? I wish you would explain that as well!

The word Jew Ijudi shares root letters with Ijud "communion". The mixed multitude of all nations under de sky mixed with the sons of Israel are called "the ones who made communion" that is the meaning of Ijudim those who made Ijud. That is to fullfil the promess given to Abraham "You are going to be father of multitude of nations" and "In you will be blessed all the families of the earh" The Ijudim are the ones who made Ijud and are from all the nations of the earth.

I heard another version that the term had its origins during the 17th century.
