A few things to keep in mind: -Your General has (usually) a pretty beefy unit you can often risk him to provide morale boosts, hit enemy on flanks, or to beat a weaker unit. For example, a general unit charge can sometimes destroy a unit of low cost spears like militia in one go. -Missile troops don't work well when bunched up. Try spreading them out for a proper firing arc. If they have to aim high they will suffer in terms of accuracy. Aim for targets that are either dangerous units for you to face head on or to make later fight easier. Cavalry are big walking targets. They can move fast but are easy to hit. A well timed arrow volley can decimate a charge or mess up any unattended cavalry units in the open. -One of the earliest problems to learn how to counter: Missile Cavalry. DO NOT CHASE THEM. They will just run away while still shooting you. To counter, use foot archers they have typically better range and are more accurate. -Sword and axe units should be what you use to kill infantry. Axes work well against the heavily armored. Spears to either receive a charge or counter cavalry. Light cavalry to flank an enemy position, hit weaker parts of a line, or run down routing units. Medium Cavalry(heavy cavalry that do not have horse armor) can work most cavalry roles in a pinch and usually shine in melee combat without sacrificing speed too much. Heavy or Shock Cavalry will brutalize an unprepared defender and cause large morale penalties as well as casualties but are slow and need protection. If using pikes remember that guard position works well for them to set up a fortified position. -Guard position is probably one of the most under utilized options in game. It tells your units to stay in formation at all times, obey all orders given even under duress unless routed(ie if given an order to charge a line they will continue to do so even if they get charged from the side), and also will refuse to chase down enemies who disengage from the fight(running away or luring you out of a defensive position). -Flanking is probably the easiest way to cause a unit to mass panic and run. if you cant go around the line try softening it with missile fire before striking or place your best units in the area to try to break. In this way one or more of your units has a better chance to get through and hit a neighboring enemy unit in the side. -As long as public order is at or above 100% there is no chance of rebellion. as long as public order is above 200% rebel armies cannot spawn(although brigands still can). generally rebels have professional units and brigands do not. -build economy buildings first if able. This will mean better support of multiple armies, meaning easier campaigns. -ROADS are hugely important they allow much faster travel between cities, provide growth from trade, and money from trade. -Mercenaries should really only be used for a major battle or war with one nation then disbanded so they don't eat up your finances. -utilizing special ammo abilities costs extra ammo per shot to compensate with lower rate of fire and extra status effects. -Don't neglect the papacy if you don't get into the cardinal promotion game you will find yourself on the receiving end of a 6 nation coalition to end you. -Your decisions on the campaign map and the battlefield will shape your generals. Chasing down the fleeing army, Exterminating a settlement, and crushing an army significantly smaller then you (10+ units) will certainly cause an increase in dread. occupying a town, ending a battle without chasing down enemies, releasing captives, and crusades will cause an increase in chivalry. -Chivalry is good for defense and best city growth and dread is good for attack and best for public order. -Inquisitions will target any and all generals and units in sight they will try to denounce your men and will cause public order issues until you eliminate heretics completely in the area and nearby areas. so spam priests to try to get rid of the inquisition or make assassins. -always examine menus and information buttons and such to find more options available (including moving your capital which is hugely important late game.)
I've been playing this game on and off since release lmao, and I'm still learning funny gimmicks. Today I learned you can reverse invade Europe with the Aztecs by gifting them territory
Another tip: Try to be smart what type of settlement you really need. You have two types of settlements: Towns and castles. Towns generally generate more income, but don´t have the facilities to train strong units. Castles can train stronger units, but generate lower income. I think you generally want more towns, especially as your empire grows. You can build castles closer to the frontlines to be able to quickly build and move stronger units to the battlefield and protect your empire.
Thank you for this tutorial, like many others the in-game one bugged out on me and although there are workarounds to continue it, there's a lot more wisdom to be acquired here.

Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it :). Yes I have played them all, my favourite is Shogun 2, I feel like it's one of the more challenging games, while also looking stunning graphically (even for a game now 8 years old).
What do i do with extra Generals that i don't need to fight, I've had three get a negative trait in loyalty because i wasn't using them. Should i join them with another army and have two generals in one army ? i just thought it would be better to keep them in a settle meant and wait until an opportunity arises
Tips for money; 1) Disbanding units - You have to be willing to frequently disband units, that's the secret. You need to plan your initial expansion carefully and quickly. You want to burn up your starting units on taking cities, and any that are too far from the action should be immediately disbanded. You can leave only 1 garrison unit per settlement, you can get away with that for a while. You cannot afford to pay for units to go on Gulliver's travels, forget it, disband them and build new units closer to where they are needed. You should also immediately disband any starting ships - you can do without ships for a while. Sometimes you are awarded units for completing missions, i usually immediately disband them! 2) Converting castles to cities - Also you usually do well converting castles to cities. You only need two or three castles over all. 3) The other important thing for money is actually the town garrison buildings up to level 2 at least, level 3 is ideal - they allow you to have more free upkeep units in the city and improve growth! 4) Crusades - you should always be on the lookout to initiate a crusade whenever possible. Armies on crusade charge no upkeep! Also you can use the crusade to improve the chivalry of all your generals (except dread ones). When you are ready to take the crusade city, the same turn join all your chivalry generals before you do! 5) Diplomats - get diplomats going in all directions as early in the game as possible, you want those trade rights agreements! Alliances are easier to form early on in the game too. 6) Watch towers - build watch towers adjacent to roads where you need line of sight but never 'on' a road. Any bandit armies will be drawn off the road to the watchtower thus preventing the bandits from stopping your trade along that road until such time as you can have an army available to take it out - or keep it to train your assassins (you will need assassins, like it or not). Remember, never use a chivalry general to attack rebels because they will be demoted - always use dread generals to attack rebels or separate the chivalry general from the army and have them as reinforcement. 7) Most of the early game you pretty much only want 1 attacking force. Occasionally raising a second force for emergencies and then disbanding it. Generally speaking, the money in this game only allows 1 attacking force in the early game, and possibly right through to mid game.
Only the first one, then once you have a foothold in the middle east, every crusade after that can be quick. The sooner you complete a crusade, the sooner the next one will become available. Also make sure you use a young commander on your first crusade, otherwise you may well lose your middle east conquest if you used an older commander who subsequently died. (thats happened to me a few times) Because you cannot control the moral in a far away city without a strong leader in it.... (A young low ranking commander gets lots of chivalry from winning a crusade, so he can then hold the city)
good luck. These past few weeks i have been doing the grand campaign with Hungary. I got about 35 provinces plus Jerusalem now stopped expanding since i dont want to win before Tumirids come which should not be too far off now. I am going to hit the Tumirids with a full horse archer army and full heavy cavalry AI reinforcements (AI controlled reinforcements not so good with horse archers). I am only using Hungary because i did not use them before - otherwise the best country to use is France.
They're both playable. Actually, if you go in your steam files you can edit a file to give you all the factions available, excluding the Papal States, The Mongols and the Rebels. If you want I can tell you how, or you can just search "How to unlock all factions in Medieval II Total War" and the first result should tell you how. Hope I could help!

TylerThaGamer put them in towns
how do you put up settle ments in the custom battle
2:41 Artillery Only you say?
My money gets negative often
Tips for money;
1) Disbanding units - You have to be willing to frequently disband units, that's the secret.
Clancy Long 😁thanks i understand. I always miss crusade because of long distance to travel..
Clancy Long oho thank u bro..i'll follow 😊
This is gonna sound dumb, but I never understood how Priests work. The game doesn't provide enough information. I don't understand how they work.
@Lone Gunman20 yeeeh, and it says they can convert. But how?
tried playing this but on campagin mode using the wasd the camera would pan too fast n was too annoying to try to play
How do you select more than one troop at once
Daniel Robinson thanks man
Im having problem defeating castle siegess
How do you stack units? Ive seen people that have 120 spearman in one whole unit.
You can change size of units in settings
Idk why but I can’t find the button to leave a quick battle
the best game in the world like call of duty to me
❤❤❤❤❤💎💎💎💎💎

My biggest Problem is with the camera keybindings
I use/ bind w and e for left to right helps a bunch. And those keys are not bound so it doesn't mess up anything else.
Is it possible to rotate the camera (not using the borders)
And is Poland or Hungary playable?
They're both playable. Actually, if you go in your steam files you can edit a file to give you all the factions available, excluding the Papal States, The Mongols and the Rebels. If you want I can tell you how, or you can just search "How to unlock all factions in Medieval II Total War" and the first result should tell you how. Hope I could help!
