I love the exquisite historical accuracy in this scene, right down to the smallest details. Notice how the madam is writing on a wax tablet, using a stylus. So when she makes a mistake writing, she has to smooth it out with the blunt end of the stylus. (The ancient Romans would have been amazed by modern wooden graphite pencils with an eraser, and the abundance of paper today). She also makes her calculations using an abacus. (An ancient version of a modern calculator---still in use today). Also notice how dark the lighting is. Most modern depictions of interior scenes of ancient Rome are brightly lit studio scenes. They actually only had small oil lamps for artificial lighting. Glass windows were rare, and were small and blurry. So things were very dark compared to today. And Octavian's hair style and clothing are exactly as depicted in ancient mosaics of upper-class young Roman males of the time.
Yes I agree, they really accomplished to make a historical accurate atmosphere in the room. Another film that accomplished the same was Barry Lyndon. Shame there's not more of that kind. Though I think it is quite an expense to build scenes such as this.
One of the things I love about this show is that almost every scene is used as an opportunity to show a different aspect of life in Ancient Rome along with advancing the plot or exploring characters. The attention to detail in Rome is insane. Shame it never got more than 2 seasons
0:10 Historical accuracy right there. Octavian (even as emperor) is historically known to be a notorious user of the phrase "I'm sick and can't go to work."
He meant "Narbo" as in "Narbo Martius" a city in Gaul, modern day Narbonne, France. It was a major location for the Roman expedition to Spain and Gaul. Nice place.
@@lewistaylor2858 The definition of "noble" was somewhat informal at that time. Octavian's father wasn't noble but his mother absolutely was (she was Caesar's niece and Pompey's cousin). And Pullo likely wouldn't have appreciated the difference anyway.
@erni muja I hate to tell you this, but Octavian probably did have a slave concubine or two growing up. Roman sexuality being what it was, they regarded sex as a healthy thing for a growing boy. Remember, their idea of being a good parent and our idea of being a good parent would differ greatly.
The Roman empire spanned most of the known world at that time. She could have been taken as a slave in Britain and ended up earning her freedom and starting a brothel.
@@vulpsturm It was for Cato! But he was very old-fashioned. She only said one thousand, and there are two common currencies in Rome (sestertius and denarius).but considering one thousand denarius for prostitute is ridiculous(record show that for 625 denarii you can get ones for yourself) I will count the price as sestertii. one modius(6.5kg) of wheat cost around 7 sertertii during 79Ad Pompeii,so let's say that 1kg of wheat is 1 sestertii give or take, and with today price of wheat is around $2/kg which make her price is 1000×$2=2000$.

@@nagihangot6133 Technically "Aryan" is a word from Sanskrit literature, not Persian, although Iranian is certainly a cognate. It's far from clear that "Aryan" ever represented a separate physical ethnicity, as opposed to a social class, in India.

@@farmerned6 It was the belief of the time. Giving a blowjob (if you were woman or man) was also seen as hideously shameful - as Roman's believed your mouth smelt and tasted of piss ever after. But yeah - they didn't think of homosexuality like we do - they didn't care much if a man fucked other men, but if you were fucked BY other men, that was a disgrace, because it 'meant' you were taking the female role and literally a pussy.
Also you'll note Pullo didn't get offended on behalf of Octavian when a boy was offered, as a modern man almost certainly would have. That's what's called historical accuracy and authenticity.
Interestingly Roman (men) seem genuinely to have believed that a woman could not enjoy sex with another woman, because what would be the point? No one was being 'the man'.
Modern tv shows and movies usually get the past very wrong. Rome was a rare exception ... it was probably a bit 'hyper-real' (I remember my classically schooled father hated it - and ranted about how good Roman women would never have acted as Attia did), but it did a good job of not falling into the usual traps of just dressing modern day people up in togas.
