Incredible! I love... music words, but whatever key you were singing in, being higher and a little dissonant? Maybe? from the music? It gave it this real wave of longing. It's often sung like a promise, and you sing it like a prayer. As you know, this is one of my fave songs ever.
Thank you Justine! ❤️ I think of you when I sing this now, and am so glad you enjoy this version! 🥰 "It's often sung like a promise, and you sing it like a prayer" is so touching to me. You hear my voice 🫂
The one and only, the Master. A really good interpretation of this wonderful song, Johnny, and one I’m enjoying listening to, my friend. You’re bringing the poetry to life, and I like that a lot. My enjoyment of LC’s songs is enhanced by the backing of singers such as the awesome Webb Sisters. You are to be congratulated for getting the majesty of the words across in a more pared back manner. I like a lot.
Thank you so much for such kind words, Robin! 🙏 It's hard to express how deeply Cohen has influenced me, and I am constantly grateful for his music. I definitely agree about the backup singers, he always had excellent ones to augment his music, the Webb Sisters, Jennifer Warnes, Sharon Robinson, etc. It means a lot to me that you are still able to hear the majesty of this song in my simple version.
A wonderful cover version my friend...sung with a lot of feeling and great guitar sounds Johnny. Thanks for sharing, I love to listen to you...big thump up 15👍 Many greetings mate...🤘🎸Daniel
An interesting treatment of this fabulous song! One of my favourite Leonard Cohen songs, and I sing it too. I like the fact that you have put your own stamp on this song, and not tried to slavishly copy Leonard's original version. The song itself is so profound, and has layered meanings, both happy and sad. Your nuanced performance is a refreshing and welcome addition to the list of good cover versions that are already on TH-cam! Well done!
Thank you Robert! 🙏 Cohen's songs are incredible to cover, because it always feels like there is so much space in them! I'm never going to adhere too strictly to an original when I cover, often the joy for me comes from re-arranging. At the same time, of course, I always want to show reverence to the composer, particularly with an icon like Leonard. I know from listening to your covers that you understand this - the heartbeat of the tune is always evident underneath your singing and playing. I also wanted to say thank you for being an inspiration to me. There are a few songwriters on here that I have connected with recently whose works have encouraged me to start writing and recording original songs again, and you are certainly one of those!
Hello Friend How little is needed to have fun - just go to your excellent channel, watch what you propose... and that's it. Well done, Friend I wish you a great week, full of good music. Regards Richard
I love the guitar intro! Super lyrical. I also love the downward melodic vocal motive on “safely in” 😍 It’s interesting to hear different versions of this, because I’m really only familiar with Madeleine Peyroux’s version, which tonally is sort of halfway between yours and Leonard’s. Was I shocked to hear the jaunty original! I have come to think that your versions of his work show the voice that is underneath all that famous bravado, irony, cool… A very 20th-century mien overlays the vulnerability of his texts. Which is of course part of his genius… but for me it is a relief to hear such openness in the expression of these lyrics. Once again, I hear the real emotional meanings of the words rather than just how poetic they sound! I’m majorly loving the gentle colours of voice you’re exploring… like I said earlier about tiredness, or letting go/release. It’s moving to hear so much INTENTION coupled with such a light touch on the voice. And inspiring for me… I’m trying to find more Ease in my sound amid all the physical intensity. 🙏
Halfway between Madeleine and Leonard is an incredible thing for you to hear, because that is just about where I reside with this song! ❤️😊❤️ I've always loved the original, but often when I sing this, I'm hearing Peyroux's voice in my head. Her interpretation is incredible. Cohen was, of course, cool in a way I could never be, but that river of emotion underneath is water I happily wade into! His minor key compositions provide endless cover possibilities, and I'll probably keep re-imagining some of these songs as long as I can play the guitar and/or sing! Any control I have learned for my voice I lifted directly from listening to you sing, so if you're getting anything positive from my singing, it's just a time delayed mirror effect. 🥰
