Nice video! I am a native of Joplin but have since moved to Columbia MO. Joplin does not have a good history with taking care of its historical buildings, unfortunately. Many historical buildings were either destroyed or damaged beyond repair in the tornado, and other buildings are not being saved. A couple of other historical buildings are the Union Depot, which was a train station until 1970 and has since been abandoned, and Memorial Hall, which was previously a concert hall, and after being replaced by a larger performing arts center nearby has been marked for demolition. I have found that Columbia treats its buildings much better, buildings from the 1800s are in good shape and regular use, while it seems like Joplin treats any building older than 1930 as basically useless.
That's really a shame and very short-sighted for Joplin.
Not just haunted, but QUITE haunted! That is a great subject. Enjoyed it Keith.
Thank you Philip!
Hey Keith - loved that you came to Joplin (I live Webb City, right next door). Ironically, I had just went over to the old Freeman hospital the day before you released this to get some more pictures. As you referenced, this building may not be long for this world if the City's plan works out. I'm not sure if you saw it, but there is a cross to the south east of the hospital across the street and I have a picture of that on my Instagram with the hospital in the background. On the North side, there is a cornerstone with AD 1923 and Freeman Hospital written on it. It is covered up by a vine, and I plan on getting out there this week with my loppers to take the vine out and get a clean shot of that cornerstone before the building leaves us. I've wanted to do some amateur Urbex on this place, but I have heard it is full of needles, and structurally, it is questionable at best. In any case, thank you for sharing this video, I loved your take on how to capture this wonderful building and enjoy all of your videos. Have safe travels!
Thanks Doug! I didn’t see that cross! I think you’re right about the building. The news article said pieces are falling off of it too. I suspect it’ll be gone soon if they can find funding for demolition.
if youre still looking to urbex it, ive been in a handful of times and am looking for some folks to go with
This probably sounds stupid but I realised watching this video that the detail in your photos, actually brings back the buildings to history. In other words, each building looks run down or unloved until you see them as one of your photos. To me, they come alive again at the same time preserves their history. Thanks for another lovely video of your travels.
Thanks so much! That doesn't sound stupid to me -- I appreciate your thoughtful comments. What you say is one of the reasons I seek these places out.
Hello dear friends.
A short but certainly not bad video.
Too bad that these kinds of buildings have to be demolished.
I have this with many buildings in your videos.
Then I think there would be someone who would appreciate the historical value of this building and make something of it where the old building is still preserved only with a different purpose.
But there is only one thing that everything revolves around and that is the big money.
Many thanks, Keith and Teena for this video that I watched with great pleasure again.
Antoine.
Thanks for watching Antoine! You are right!
In 2011 I was driving by in Joplin 2 hours before the tornado
Wow! You just missed it. I witnessed an EF 5 tornado in Texas and it’s a terrifying thing to see
