This was deeply personal to Tyler. He fought with the label to keep it on the album. They thought there would be negative backlash. But Tyler was committed to get this message out.
He used a very stripped down spoken word approach to make sure his message was clear. And the piano part reminiscent of Moonlight Sonata set the perfect tone.
He’s incorporated suicide awareness into a lot of his music, but in a more veiled fashion. He became increasingly disturbed by what he felt was a glorification of suicide, particularly with celebrities.
It’s heartbreaking hearing him perform this 😿 But there’s a powerful BBC Radio 1 performance of just Tyler on piano in an empty theater. This song comes from deep within his soul. And I love how he ends it with uplifting encouragement.

The label asked if they wanted to rerelease it, but Tyler decided instead to just select certain songs from RAB to re-record and put onto Vessel. I don’t believe Tyler has ever said why he chose some tracks and not others. But that’s why the other tracks won’t be on Spotify.

Tyler doesn't just point out a problem, he offers a solution. A solution of looking to people who have lived and survived life, and can pass their lessons to those just beginning their struggles. It adds a whole new dimension to the larger conversation.

Chester Bennington was a HUGE TØP fan (posting about them and their music on social media regularly - even covering and practing their songs on his acoustic guitar. So glad you finally reacted to this. I've asked a few times. Neon Gravestones tore the heart out of me the 1st time I heard it. It's such an important track. Not just about getting people to talk about suicide, thus "beating a stigma that no longer scares up" but it also calls out the reaction, mainly on social media, when a young person or a celeb takes their own life. The news is usually followed by pages and pages of posts & comments bigging the person up, talking about how loved they were etc. Maybe we tell our nearest & dearest those things everyday while they're alive and it can do some good.
It's been scientifically studied and found that in the young, suicide can spread like a virus. Someone struggling with their mental health sees all the posts and love for the deceased person and it almost encourages or makes it easier for them to do it themselves. The boys touch on using suicide "as a form of a weapon.....thinking I'll show them....". Again, proven fact, beneath a certain age, young people don't understand the permanence of death. I saw a documentary on the subject a few years ago. One 13 year old boy was heard to say to his psychiatrist " if I top myself at the weekend, I can't wait to see how all the assholes at school react on monday"!
TOP literally saved my daughter's life. She'd been struggling with severe depression & anxiety for almost 2 years and we believe she was reaching a stage of despair when suicide would no longer be a huge stretch. By fluke, she heard Car Radio, never having heard of TOP before. The lyrics, she said later, touched her soul and made her realise that someone else knew exactly how she felt. She started listening to their other stuff back then and just bonded with them. She saw them live the 1st time they came to Ireland as a support act for another band. She's seen them every time they've come to Britain or Ireland since. I ended up loving them because she had them on in my car so much.
For my 50th birthday, we went to their Trench gig in Belfast. The morning before the show, I'd bought meet & greet passes as a surprise. The PR people were telling everyone in the queue no photos, no questions etc etc to keep the line moving. When we got to the table where the boys were signing autographs I said to Tyler " thank you so much for saving my daughter's life"! They both stopped what they were doing and stood up. The PR guys went to move us on but Tyler told them to back off. They came round the table and hugged my daughter 1 by 1. They took a few minutes to chat with her and then posed for photos with her. It made my girl's year! They say don't meet your heros! Maybe you just need better heros!!
    Great job boys xxx

a lot of what twenty one pilots thing is, is not just telling people to "just don't do it" but giving them an alternate option. like in "guns for hands" they ask us to change our hands from guns, into "fists" that are pumping to the beat of their songs.
they help us by giving us an alternative, rather than just telling us to stop. Telling us to stop serves no purpose when we feel no reason to keep going. They give us a reason to keep going.
Personally, I have struggled with what my purpose is; In life, religion, and the systems we've been put in. They have recognized this universal struggle, told us how they have the same problems, and helped us find reasons to stay. Without them and Jesus, I would either be a druggie or dead.

Thank you for the heartfelt reaction. Thank you for opening up. Tyler had to push to get this one on the album because the label thought it was too much. Reminds me of how ppl didn't accept TOP in the beginning bc they thought TOP promoted un-aliving, to use your term. But when ppl actually stop and take in the lyrics, they realize Tyler and Josh are, in fact, about the exact opposite. The marrying of the 'beat because of happy it sounds, but the lyrics are so down' and knowing that 'life has a hopeful undertone' really helps us feel right along with Tyler that 'no, they won't get 'em.' Such a powerful and necessary message. That's why we are the Clique, the Few, the Proud, and the Emotional. FPE |-/ 🤍🤍

They did a live performance of Heathens in Romania that they mixed with the Stranger Things theme song. They showed snips of the last season on the screens. In the most recent season, a character was brought back from the bad place where she listened to music (Kate Bush "Been Running up that Hill"). On the screen in the back it says "Music has the Power to Save Lives". It's kind of hard to see and I wish the camera focused on it more. You made me think of that at the end. *hugs for Kyle and *hugs for Eric, I certainly missed these reactions from you all, but I'm glad to have another one now. They have sung a lot about mental illness topics in their older music. But this was the first of this kind where it's more simplified in a sense. I freaking love them so much. They constantly try to tell their fan base that they also struggle and that those listening are not alone in their own fights.
This came out around the time when we lost Anthony Bourdain and Chester Bennington. Basically voicing frustrations that people are ignored until it's already too late. And then, all of a sudden, we start focusing on it after they are gone. Creating television specials, trying to release their biography early because they passed, buying their merch, albums, etc. Our attention should be placed on people to prevent them from struggling or alleviating them while they are. Not when it's too late. This song always makes me gosh darn sob because of how brilliantly genuine and thoughtful it is.
I can't remember if you reacted to it already but it would be wonderful if you could do a double-feature type reaction. My Chemical Romance created a song called Cancer and Twenty One Pilots did a beautiful cover of it. My Chemical Romance has a music video for it and Twenty One Pilots has an official lyric video for it. If you already reacted to one then it would be awesome if you could eventually react to the other one as well when you are in a good enough mental space to do so. I look forward to seeing more reactions from you listening to Twenty One Pilots, and I'm going to go revisit the older ones you've already done again. 💙

And amazing! I really could never pick a favorite song of theirs. I have some I like less than others but I still love them all. Some on No Phun Intended are very raw and could use a touch of what he can do now to polish them up, but the fact that he wrote those lyrics and put them to music at such a young age!?!? Just amazing.

I really have been loving these twenty one pilots reactions. An extremely important band to me. I agree with how they can change up their sound so much and still sound like themselves.
Despite tøp talking about mental health and su*cide consistently it was still jarring when I first heard this song when Trench released back in 2018. Definitely the most direct and carefully worded Tyler has taken this topic in a song before. I have cried a lot to this song, especially with the first couple of listens.

There is a video out there of a concert where you can see Tyler is not as energetic as always. For one of the repetitions he quietly says "promise me this, when i kill myself" instead of "if i lose to myself". And as a person who struggles with anxiety and depression since I have memory, it broke my heart from the inside out, but maybe it was just a little change to get that phrase out of his chest
