    I have to thank the director James Conlon for this most sensitive rendition of Symphony n.2 of Brahms.I am very fond of this performance that recalls the autobiographic aspects of his not so easy life (his sorrows,feelings and melancholy)of this oustanding composer we feel also in Symphony n.3

    I've been enjoying your videos for several years. I especially value Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's Bruckner 4th, which I have seen a couple of dozen times or more and have linked on to others. This Brahms 2nd is likewise top-notch. Thanks for sharing your performances with the rest of the world.

      I remember that Bruckner 4 very well and with much love. I play viola in the section and we have a couple of wonderful moments in the second movement. He asked us all to play it 5 positions higher on the next lowest string. We were initially hesitant to feel confident in that but it was a truly marvellous suggestion. Those excerpts are asked at nearly every viola audition and probably none of us played it the way he asked us to do it for that concert. It was really a treat and as I mentioned, very memorable. Stanislaw Skrowaczewski was truly one of the greats. He did also a fabulous Shostakovich 5 with us. I really loved him.

    cant unhear 04:26 if it is a horn or a clarinet on a slide tone

    • @jlunch
      @jlunch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's live music. it was a trumpet, by the way. (neither horn nor clarinet) Your ears are keen, that's a plus. I played in this concert and I am hearing it now again, for the first time, if you will. James Conlan's Brahms is on a whole, super kick-ass. It's freaking awesome. The overall ark in the symphony is brilliant compositionally, or course! A conductor's job is ultimately to present a compelling proposal, a direction. He must seduce the orchestra with a conviction in his musical interpretation. This Brahms' 2 is really good. I've played it a lot of course yet I've listened to it many times more. I've heard maybe 50 different recordings , performed it myself probably 25 times , etc etc.
      We are playing in a dilapidated sports complex that has been more or less abandoned for fifteen years. It's concrete, in a remote outer ghost town-like part of the city. It's giant, super humid and cold. It has 11,000 seats, virtually empty and incredibly depressing. Our day to day rehearsals are all held there.
      Calling out a momentito from a player and offer nothing more about what you heard is ridiculous. Your comment lacked perspective and ultimately content. This is the internet and it's forever. You said it...., you went there. I'll give you credit. You can hear a momentito, (and we know it was misdiagnosed); but can you hear a symphony?

    Well this is a disappointment for me - having been very impressed with the beautifully balanced performance by the Sinfonica with Dima Slobodeniouk conducting ( issued 10 Aug 2020.) This conductor, though American has reverted to the all too heaviness of the Germanic conducting tradition (tub-thumping I call it, and could not enjoy the sounds created. I also get the feeling that the orchestra are not much at ease with this interpretation, certain movements were clumsy and plodding, albeit some passages were very beautiful indeed and a lightness was definitely attained in the third movement. I very much prefer Dima Slobodeniouks performance.

      I agree, James. A very heavy sound which left me rather cold all along. Nothing remotely close to the usually wonderful Dima-OSG chemistry.

      I played this concert. I've played here for over twenty years. Conlan coming here occasionally is a real treat. I think this is an awesome Brahms 2nd. I've played it probably 25 times and with several orchestras. Berstein, Ozawa, Heitink ..., you know, good ones. I really enjoyed this one. All of our rehearsals were in the sports coliseum. This was one of the few we actually played in the Palacio. The acoustic is completely different from what we'd been rehearsing all week. One space has no acoustic whatsoever and the other is awash with the sound of a cheap ceramic bathroom. You feel it sounded heavy...., That could go for the way it was recorded more than what we're doing. For me, the interpretation is not unnecesarily heavy at all. I think it's awesome.

      @@jlunch Conlon's rendition was very good and the orchestra played nicely. I just can't imagine the OSG playing otherwise! It's just that Dima's conducting the same work in 2020 was so recent that it's difficult not to compare. But nothing wrong with comparing, I think. It's fun and one learns a lot by doing it.
