Daggerfall Unity - 44 - Thieves Guild Quest - The Qualifying Examination

I wasn't going to stray from Mages Guild work, but it turns out I have done something to make Thieves Guild interested in my activities. And they want me to do a kind of 'exam' - I need to steal an item of clothing from a local mage. Thankfully, the owner didn't show up, so I've completed the job and got a gold piece as a token of mission completion. This is no "Thief Simulator 1996"!

Damn, I'm in the middle of my first playthrough and I'm being locked out of this. The guy won't talk to me after I steal the item. I've reloaded so many times and still nothing
