Choo Seng Quee even inspired this psychological fear on Soh Chin Aun as he was not able to play his normal game whenever he faces Singapore. When I was on the pitch there was Seng Quee eyeing on me like a hawk and I felt very uneasy.

I disagree. The 1980 team coached by Jita Singh was the best. They surprised everyone by qualifying for the Pre-Olympics final and had surprisingly beaten two top Asian teams, North Korea (3-1) and China(1-0). I still remember during the friendly games before the tournament, they had beaten European clubs like Sportsfruende from Germany 2-0, Grasshopper Zurich from Switzerland 1-0 and drew 2-2 with the then Yugoslav national team. The same Yugoslavian team had beaten the Malaysian national team 9-0 a few days earlier!
The 1977 team only beat Southeast Asia teams during the 1977 Pre-world Cup tournament but in the 1977 SEA Games, they lost 2-0 to Thailand and were thrashed 5-1 by Burma!

Singapore had a great run under coach Choo Seng Quee when they won the 1977 Malaysia Cup.They were unbeaten in all its Malaysia Cup matches.Even defending champions Selangor were victims of Singapore's relentless march towards the Malaysia Cup with the latter winning both legs at the National Stadium and at the Merdeka Stadium with 2-1 scores in the semifinals. It was Choo Seng Quee's off the pitch preparations and his dossier on the entire Selangor players led to the torpedoed of the defending champions. In fact Seng Quee had read Selangor's tactical plans like a book in the second leg semifinal at the Merdeka when the latter moved Soh Chin Aun upfront to play as an attacking defender.Seng Quee made meticulous preparations to counter this and it paid off handsomely in the end with Singapore winning 2-1.

Yes that was really the definitive Singapore's national team although they maybe some who would dispute that.
1977 the year it was and Singapore never had it better when it comes to football success.
It was the year not only Singapore regained back the Malaysia Cup after a lapse of twelve years but also the republic finished as runners up to Hong Kong in the 1977 pre World Cup held in Singapore.
It was the wily master tactician the shrewd coach Choo Seng Quee who masterminded those two successes.
It was in the 1977 pre World Cup that Singapore upset the favourites Malaysia 1-0 and that victory over the Malaysians was definitely one of the best achievements for Seng Quee.As Seng Quee came up against his former pupil M.Kuppan who was under the former tutelage in the late Fifties.
But the 1977 Malaysia Cup final victory over Penang 3-2 in extra time at the Merdeka Stadium was the crowning achievement of Seng Quee's career as coach.

Yes,the late Choo Seng Queen was a renown Malaya Cup player in the 1930s before an injury cut short his football career just before the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941.
Seng Quee indeed was a brilliant wing half and was a member of the great pre War Singapore team from 1939-1941.
But then Seng Quee too made a name for himself when he became a coach with his playing days over.
He had coached the Indonesian team in the 1950s and there after the Malayan national team that won the Merdeka tournament title from 1958-1960 and then the gold medal at the 1961 Seap Games in Rangoon.M.Kuppan,Ghani Minhat,Yee Seng Choy,Govindarajoo and even M.Chandran were among his pupils.
Late in his coaching career,Seng Quee won great honours with the Singapore national team.As a wily tactician and a shrewd coach to boot,it was Seng Quee whose coaching helped Singapore finished second to Hong Kong in the 1977 pre World Cup held in Singapore. The same year,he masterminded Singapore in their 1977 Malaysia Cup final victory over Penang.

  • @yiseng4602

Yes Singapore in 1977 was unbeatable under the guidance of the wily master tactician the late Uncle Choo Seng Quee.
Because of the shrewd and wily Seng Quee Singapore finished as runnersup in the 1977 pre World Cup held at the Kallang National Stadium and also won the Malaysia Cup.
The Malaysian state teams were always thrashed by the Lions whenever they faced Singapore at the National Stadium. The typical example being Johore who were trounced 6-1.
That year too when Singapore won the 1977 Malaysia Cup under Seng Quee it was holders Selangor who had to bite the dust in the two legged semifinals both at the National Stadium and at the Merdeka Stadium losing by 2-1 margins. With Selangor out Singapore were firm favourites to win the Malaysia which they did edging Penang 3-2 in extra time in the final. With Seng Quee around Malaysian football was at its lowest ebb with Singapore even beat Malaysia 1-0 in the 1977 pre World Cup at the National Stadium with the scorer of the penalty goal none other than the recently deceased Mohammed Noh.
Isa Bakar who was a member of the Malaysian team that lost 1-0 to Singapore had bitter memories when playing at the National Stadium said,"Whenever I play at the National Stadium I always ended up on the losing side be it with Malaysia or Penang. There is this force at the pitch that makes your legs weak when you are about to take a shot at the Singapore goal."

1977 was remembered more for the semi-finals. Selangor purposely finished second in their group to meet Singapore because they wanted to humiliate Singapore by knocking them out in the semi-finals. Why? They felt that the Malaysian National team was robbed of victory during the pre-world cup , a game they felt they should have won. That's why the bitterness. The rivalry between Singapore and Selangor was so fierce that before the first leg at the National Stadium, the queue for ticket were so long that it resulted in a stampede which one Singapore fan died! Singapore won 2-1 but Selangor were very confident of overturning the tie. However, they were shocked 2-1 at their own home ground, still remember Hasli Ibrahim heading from a bad clearance by Santokh Singh and the ball sailed unexpectedly into goal during the final minutes! There were wild celebrations and Selangor was humiliated.
Every time Singapore played, the entire nation comes together to share the sorrow of defeat and the joy of victory. I loved those moments...

@@goolisonho1483 rightly so and spot on as Malaysian fans then had expected Selangor to avenge Malaysia's 1-0 defeat to Singapore in the 1977 Malaysia Cup semifinals.
The prolific striker Mokhtar Dahari did not feature in Malaysia's disastrous pre World Cup campaign but he was back in time for the two legged Malaysia Cup semifinals.
Malaysian football fans were aghasted and incensed at the bias refereeing of the Japanese referee Toshio Asami and claimed that they were robbed of victory with three sure goals.
Singapore won the first leg at the Kallang National Stadium 2-1 but Mokhtar Dahari did score when he outsprinted Syed Mutalib to score past Edmund Wee.
With Singapore just winning 2-1 many Selangor and Malaysian soccer fans had expected Selangor to thrash Singapore in the return leg at the Merdeka Stadium.
But as it turned the wily coach Choo Seng Quee had compiled a dossier on every Selangor and it paid off as Selangor were sent reeling to a 2-1 defeat. As such,Singapore won with an aggregate score of 4-2 to reach the Malaysia Cup final facing Penang.

Hassan Mansor yes that was 44 years ago to date and that 1977 pre World Cup match between Malaysia and the home team Singapore took place on March 6 1977.
Singapore was coached by the late Uncle Choo Seng Quee who was a wily tactician to boot.Whereas Malaysia whose coach was M.Kuppan who was one of Seng Quee's pupils when the latter took charge of the Malayan national team in the late 1950s and the early 1960s.
Yes as a seventeen year about to sit for my MCE I watched that match live on TV but unfortunately Malaysia lost 1-0 to Singapore with Singapore's winning goal came from the recently deceased Mohammed Noh who scored from the penalty spot after Quah Kim Song was harshly brought down by Yahya Yusof brother of Harun Jusoh.
After that defeat Malaysia had complained bitterly about Japan's Toshio Asami's bias refereeing and his controversial decision not to allow three certain Malaysian goals.
But as a football fan,Singapore that night were the better team and deserved to win.

    • @yiseng4602
      @yiseng4602 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@tlpor7309 It was rather ironic that Choo Seng Quee had chosen to coach the Singapore national team when his contract with the FAM ended in 1963.
Since 1958 SengQuee had been the coach of the Malayan national team.Under him,Malaya won the Merdeka tournament thrice from 1958 to 1960 although in 1960 they had to share the title with the Korea Republic. And Seng Quee also coached Malaya to the gold at the 2nd Seap Games at Rangoon in December 1961 and the year after the bronze medal at the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games beating South Vietnam 4-1.
As such, and all of a sudden it was agreed that Seng Quee was on loan to Singapore and he had no difficulty in steering Singapore to two HMS Malaya Cup victories in 1964 and 1965.
Thereafter Singapore did remarkably well to finish fourth in the 1966 Asian Games at Bangkok their best ever achievement abroad until now.
Mind you Send Quee could have offered his services to Singapore but then he had this rivalry with E.W.Barker who had held the post as president of SFA.Indeed E.W Barker and Send Quee's rivalry began in the 1950s.
It was only after Singapore had lost twice to Selangor in the Malaysia Cup final in 1975 and 1976,that N.Ganesan that sought the services of Seng Quee and the rest is history.
Mind you,Seng Quee was a wily tactician to boot and he wasn't scared of any team.Indeed when he coached Indonesia in the 1950s,Indonesia had given the visiting Uruguayan national team then the world champions a tough time before losing.
And 1977 was indeed an unforgettable and memorable year for Singapore football as the Lions finished runnersup in the 1977 pre World Cup and ended up as the Malaysia Cup champions.
Yes there is something special about Seng Quee as his knowledge of football was then well known. And it was Selangor then the reigning Malaysia Cup champions found this out to their chagrin when they clashed again with the Lions in the second leg of the 1977 Malaysia Cup semifinals at the Merdeka having won the first leg at the Kallang National Stadium 2-1.
Many Selangor fans had expected Soh Chin Aun and his men to easily beat Singapore to overturn the first leg score.
But the wily Seng Quee had other ideas. He knew from information that Chin Aun would play the role of deep striker and had come out with effective strategies to stop the latter.
Mind you Selangor with the support of their fans were pounding at the Singapore goal for long periods. But Seng Quee had it figured out that so long as Singapore didn't concede more than one goal they would beat Selangor.Indeed Singapore came alive in the last fifteen minutes to send Selangor reeling like in the 1965 HMS Malaya Cup final. Then Selangor had scored through Ibrahim Mydin but in the last fifteen minutes they were crawling to concede three goals.
Yes Seng Quee was a master tactician to boot as he often prepared dossiers on the teams that Singapore were facing.
