  • Inside Edition's Mary Calvi unearthed long-lost love letters that were exchanged by Teddy Roosevelt before he became president, and his little-known first love, Alice Lee. For decades, many historians thought all but a few of the letters had been destroyed. However, Calvi discovered them buried in archives at Harvard University. The letters form the basis for Calvi’s latest historical fiction book, "If a Poem Could Live and Breathe: A Novel of Teddy Roosevelt's First Love."

The way they write their letters is like the way we text friends, loved ones and family in our own little language. That’s cute!

You don’t have to read the book, Alice and so did Theodore’s mom died the same day on February 14 1884 he was so devastated and drew a black x in his journal saying the light of his life had left him

He wrote in his diary the day he lost Alice (and also his mother): "The light has gone out of my life." And needless to say it did - he was never the same... and his grief had a great effect on his daughter Alice. His second wife Edith was incredibly jealous of Alice (Edith had been in love with him for years and he never paid her any attention) and took it out on his daughter... for example, Edith once told her that if her mother had lived she would have bored her father to death. Daughter Alice ended up being called Baby Lee by Teddy and then Sister by her half-siblings - mainly because Teddy could not bare to hear the name Alice. If you look up daughter Alice (Alice Roosevelt Longworth) you'll see that she grew up to be a bit... umm.. vicious? Most especially towards her cousin Eleanor.

I remember reading a quote of his that he couldn't possibly tend to his daughter's mischief and run the country at the same time.

Do you know if Alice and his mother died together? Or how? Or if it was just two coincidences on the same day?

Spoilers: She died during childbirth. The child lived, but Alice sadly passed. Want to know a big upset too? Teddy's mother died that same day. In the diary that Teddy owned, on the day both his mother and Alice(the love of his life) passed away, he wrote: The light has gone out of my life. It took a while before Teddy remarried but it did take a serious toll on him.

What a coincidence that the letters come out at the same time of the book
It’s crazy how a random lady can choose when to show announce the letters ina way she’s playing with history
