I only just found this video. Truly, it is a wonderful musical piece for harmonica, and I wept to watch it. Clearly, the harmonica he's playing has the stainless steel body that my partner, Douglas Tate, created especially for him. Doug also played this number flawlessly in a recording, and I heard it many times since, even in our home basement as he practiced. To find this video is priceless! Many thanks for the upload!
I still have the 78rpm record of this which someone gave me when I was a little kid. Couldn't get enough of it. It turned me on to Balkan dance music as well as classical, strongly influencing the direction of my life. Amazing to actually see him perform this complex work, and so close to his passing.
I was lucky enough to see Larry at the Civic in Darlington a few years ago and he was spectacular but at the very end of the show he dropped his favorite harmonica on the floor and it shattered, he was gutted !
Thank you for posting this memorable video on Larry Adler's performance with the symphony in Tokyo in 1997. I am amazed that he, at the age of 83, two years before his death, still could perform this difficult piece so wonderfully. Every harmonica players should view this and add it to your favorite list. Anthony Lau (Canada)
Thanks for uploading this great artist and his performance. I still have an old LP which I play on occasions. Strangely - I never thought of looking for him on TH-cam :-(. Just fell on this viedo by accident! He is one of the best ... dare I say ... THE best!!! What a joy -
If you are a chromatic harmonica player and you want to know what you should be aiming to achieve - watch this video. This is God in action. C'est Magnifique!
Thank you for your comment. Larry Adler was an outstanding soloist and your friend Douglas Tate was also a magnificent soloist and a brilliant engineer. I had the pleasure of knowing him personally, and have been talking and playing with him a little, in a world championship. Reminds me very well, having had my hands on his harmonica silver, which had the precious curiosity of having a large ruby embedded on the button. May rest in peace.

Stop all harp shows, everywhere - this is insane - I have reserved space at the top for Adler, based on live show c. 1976, and that Audio Fidelity album. Glad I did - because no one comes close to this technique and passion - Larry was an intellectual and it shows
+andrew gillis I saw Larry Adler in person in 1980's with the San Antonio Symphony. What a great show. I got to meet him & he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word! I will always treasure my autographed program from that show, as well as the memory. Happy Harpin' :)
I wonder how many harmonica reeds he went through practising and playing in concerts. What I saw in this performance I would say a lot. Poor reeds and slider
It is said, that Hohner made the harmonicas for Larry Adler, following the precise instructions of what he intended (thicker and longer reed, for him to "pull through".) True? False ? Only by having access to one of the harmonicas played by him, or getting information from those who prepared and tuned them in. Any information more?
@@HermenegildoMendes oh I see... So mean since its been worked on there is no way to know exactly what he has here right? Whatever he is playing here is perfect
I disagree: The Lord didn't create only one LA; only one, very talented LA took the time and effort to teach himself how to play like that. There are lots of very musical people in the world -- most of them just never do what it takes to become great musicians like Adler or other greats. It's really that simple, in my opinion. God is great, but the human spirit is supreme!
The grand Larry Adler. When I was teen ager I has one harmonica Honner - Larry Adler. Already I can watch in You Tube to this great artist.
I am sweating just looking at him giving his all breath to sing that harmonica. Breathtaking also for the listener.
Thank you for sharing this magnificent performance. May it be forever available! It must be! Please!
Makes me happy. That this exists.
Le maitre a l oeuvre Merci
I need this every day.

Larry Adler defined top level harmonica there was no one like him before or since he is a superb musician.
Good version.
As a Romanian familiar with The Romanian Rhapsody I can say that this is a truly unique and genial interpretation. Great artist at play!
I have never heard such mastery before. I think he killed that harmonica! Unreal!
I was lucky enough to see Larry at the Civic in Darlington a few years ago and he was spectacular but at the very end of the show he dropped his favorite harmonica on the floor and it shattered, he was gutted !
Thank you so much for uploading this gem of a performance Harmonicando!
It goes beyond my imagination that this can really be done.
I have always regretted never being able to go to one of his concerts. Unbelievable skill with such a relatively simple instrument.
That is the most difficult music instrument that there is. Chromatic Harmonica, look it up.

@drUmriel Thanks a lot for your comment
@ThaVyRuZ thanks for your comment
Now that's a rather interesting take on Enescu's work. :)
Did anyone ever her him play the blues?
It is a difficult and time consuming task, but if you've done once, you get going again. Best wishes
HOW CAN ANYONE DISLIKE THIS VIDEO?! They must be crazy!!
That would trivialize the genius!
Fucking terrific!

Thanks for comment
Well, now I understand, thanks for the tip
What harmonica did he use? A Honer in C?
Performance
It was his Favorite one given to him by George Gershwin
Oh Lord Why did you create only one Larry Adler. You could have created at least half a dozen of him.

Thats not a 270!!! What harmonica is he playing here?! Its not the silver concerto correct?

Ce locomotiva trage trenul intre Constanta si Mangalia,,?
He was gutted? But why? Just because he dropped his harmonica?
I wish to know which scale chromonica is he playing !
C major
