Folding door controlled by cable

  • The door consists of two slider-crank mechanisms.
    Driving parts are violet sliders that are brought into motion by a motor via a cable drive of two pink pulleys. Lower branch of the cable is fixed to the left slider. The upper branch is fixed to the right slider.
    Thanks to the eccentricity of the slider-crank mechanisms there no dead positions when the door is at its closed position.

    might want to put some springs on those hinges, but otherwise, should work well.

      Notice tiny detail of doors set forward on their end pivots? Means Lines of compression forces attempting to open shut door, are slightly offset from line between end pivots. Provides a little force to push hinge away from opening.
      Would still probably benefit from spring etc!

    If your door goes completely straight you may have trouble starting the opening process with this mechanism, because you will just be pushing along the length of the door

      At the closed position of the door there is an offset between the moving direction of the violet sliders and the joints between the door panels so the slider motion can open the door.

    This would be great even without the motor cause if you replace the motor with a pully then when you open one side the other side opens with it in unison.

      The mechanism has 1 DoF.
      Only one motor used for controlling it.

    Well not so good, missing pulling rod to take inner doors out of position because force of cables will just produce force towards the doors and nothing will happen. It will just brake the cable or some other part, that's why you need pulling rod to take inner doors out of line.

    It will not work. The cable must be on opposit side to hinges/fold and cantilevered out a bit to give tilting force.

      @@autogyro333 it looks like the pivot points on slider and hinges are in a straight line and will give nada turning force to open the doors
