  • My time in Zambia was characterised by long stretches of straight roads through dry bushes and charcoal production sites, followed by tough days on sandy tracks through national parks. I slept right next to the Luangwa river, where I could hear the hippos in the river, monkeys in the trees and other mammals walking around at night.
    This video was shot during August 2021

    A classic adventure by a classic adventurer. To travel through Africa on a bike with zero support in this day and age is something only contemplated by the brave and super-resilient. Not only do you withstand the thousands of daily trials and tribulations (and the occasional good day, of course, when food, water and a campsite come easily, nothing breaks, no health issues, the road is "reasonable" and flies, mosquitoes and other irritants are few) but you take the time and effort to charge loads of batteries somehow, cart a drone around and make sure that it is protected,take excellent footage, edit, publish......A modern-day hero.

    Thats your best film yet ! You really captured the essence of Africa ,dirt tracks through the bush, idyllic bush camps, the wildlife and even the f..king flies 😁 that is the Africa of my memories of 22 years living in Kenya and South Africa decades ago ! Brilliant ,just brilliant 👍

    Another great video Niels! I love the views of Africa that you are sharing with us. It's like you are peeling back the layers over a hidden world. Love seeing the birds, the monkeys, gazelles, hippos, that crocodile! The children love seeing you. :D You do a great job of editing, narrating, and music selection. Looking forward to your next one!

    Another great video Niels - you are 1 tough hombre! hahaha.
    I did a lot of bushcamping in South Africa 30 years ago and it was the same then - people would ask "aren't you frightened?, what about the wild animals, snakes and poisonous insects?"
    The truth is I never in 2 years saw any thing close by my camps, the people were always friendly and helpful and they were fantastic experiences.
    Be careful around the hippos and buffaloes as they are very shortsighted and bad tempered. The hippo is the most dangerous animal in Africa and kills more humans than any other species.
    Remember to check yourself at the end of each day for ticks. Tick bite fever is no joke!
    You are definitely the Number 1 bikepacking channel on TH-cam!
    Stay safe and have fun!

    Wow! I was in Zambia 2009 doing a wild camping safari. Beautiful country and all of the people I came across were welcoming and friendly. I assume those flies were Tsetse? Very persistent, you can hit them and they still keep coming back. They can even bite through your clothes and their bite is painful. I had the luxury of travelling in a 4x4 truck but cycling must be an amazing adventure. I'm surprised you were allowed to cycle through Luangwa. It's one of the last truly wild places in Africa with many dangerous animals.

    Your drone is a great way to see big game and get views you wouldn't otherwise see. Do you use solar panels feeding a power bank to keep your devices charged so you are effectively self sufficient?
    In the bush and NP I would be worried about lions. Yes lighting a fire to keep curious wild life away is a good idea.

  • @Wshilighlights
    @Wshilighlights 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Big fan man, great videos. I'm from South africa and have been following your journey from the start.
    One thing I would say, please stay further away from the hippos they can get extremely aggressive very quickly and way faster than they look.
    Oh and another reason for the wild fires are to encourage new growth of the vegetation.

    • @cyclingaroundtheplanet
      @cyclingaroundtheplanet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know about the fires for the growth of new vegetation. Sadly, we need fires because we have exterminated most wildlife that would otherwise be grazing this vegetation.

  • @marksadventures3889
    @marksadventures3889 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shemagh, it's what you need against the flies. You can keep from heat stroke and bugs. If you wet it then you can keep cooler.
    When in Africa we travelled by night if on foot patrols. That was long ago. Nile crocs are very powerful. Just give wild animals space and you should be fine.
