Reports suggest Ukraine is preparing for another strike against the Kerch Bridge | DW News

- The bridge currently provides the safest road connection from the Russian mainland to Crimea, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
Kyiv's forces have managed to halt traffic on the bridge with two separate attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Once with a truck bomb and once with naval drones. Russia has managed to repair the damage.
Now the British newspaper The Guardian is quoting Ukrainian intelligence officials saying Ukraine is planning a third attack, has the means to carry it out and expects to destroy the bridge by the summer.

Why would they signal it through the press?
So they don't kill civilians. Ukraine isn't like Russia.
DW spioniert für die Russen.
Watch it again, he will tell you
@Matthew-rp3jf yea right, they shelled donbas civilians for years. Even shelled the people on election day.
So that if they don’t do it, they have an excuse “It was leaked so the surprise element isn’t there anymore”. This is just another psychological warfare tactic.
"Ukraine must not destroy the Kerch bridge. That would be very unfair." --- Vladimir Putin.
"That was the most dumb thing I ever heard in my life" (T. Carlson after Putin's interview).
"Well Tucker, to understand why Russia invaded Ukraine you need to understand the history behind it. You see, billions of years ago when the young solar system was forming and the Earth was still a molten sphere orbiting the sun...." Vladimir Putin waffling and excusing his war crimes.
And it’s going to happen on July 20th at 10am sharp, they are going to send in a submarine that will leave the harbour at 7am . Follow the link below to find its route and a direct line to captain Jon , he prefers sms after 8am after he drops off his kids at st Mary’s school . Wtf
why report this to Russia??
There are lots of reasons for the Ukrainians to go public on their intentions.
It makes Russia reallocate resources to defend the bridge, using up resources & potentially leaving gaps elsewhere to be exploited.
It warns civilians that they use the bridge at their own risk.
It plays mind games with the Russians.
It increases the publicity value of destroying the bridge, & when they do destroy it, it makes them appear stronger bc they did what they said.
@@HAPninKEN It's their bridge after all. It's only fair to let them know.

Why is it news?, we heard this from german officials long time ago in the Taurus Leaks.

did you just say that russia annexed Crimea legally ??? WTF??? please explain how that was legal.
All reports say that the annexation was ILLEGAL!!!
Remeber when there was all this talk about an offensive on Kherson and we had a surprise Kharkhiv offensive first ?
Yeah this is a bit smaller in scope, and the other was allocated elsewhere.
Analyst have said air drones aren’t an option because of small warhead. Definitely. But even maritime drones have a quite small warhead. They are able to damage the bridge but this damage was modest. Cruise missiles have even smaller warhead and this bridge is protected so it would be waste of missiles. In case the most succesfull attack (with a truck) it was used more than 20 t equivalent TNT. It is very difficult to destroy or even damage something like bridge (and very heavily guarded one) from outside. But Ukraine will definitely try it. It is very important touze for military equipment as well as symbol.
Wow, thanks for sharing! Let's hope the Russians get the memo this time.
Really don't understand the heads up
Russia has limited air defence capability, they're trying to keep it stretched thin while they keep hitting oil and airbases across russia
You must be the biggest genius in Russia......
Its not secret. Its a very obvious target that's been hit before. The heads up is to scare Russian civilians from vacationing on Ukrainian land. The bridge is the only way for fascist tourists to visit Crimea without driving through the frontlines. If Russian rightfully fear Crimea they will not go there. A bridge strike could trap Russian peasants in Crimea and neither country wants to deal with that obstacle
Think of it this way, they are letting you know what Russia knows.
"A similar system" ? It is the exact same system, just a different name, they codeveloped it... I tuned out after that, any military "analyst" should know this, especially this far in the conflict....
What? You told us the bridge has been destroyed twice already. Have you forgotten to tell us it was rebuilt?
Called critical thinking m8. If attacked it third time logically would expect you to think it has been repaired. Lord
It might seem surprising as we're very used to governments not fixing that effin' pothole in like FOREVER.... but actually people do repair infrastructure. And that's a big piece of infrastructure.
@@ThatGoat maybe due to the inefficiency of cars Goverment can’t afford to fix potholes at the current politically acceptable tax rates. So tell me why the Dutch can have nice shiz and we can’t? Ow wait cause they ain’t car depended honey.
Two attacks has caused Russia into expending many resources in getting it back into operation. They have therefore proved that they have the capability to bring down the bridge and they have seen the benefits of reducing material shipments into Crimea. It’s only ever been a matter of time.
Yeah, nobody failed to tell us that it had been repaired. You should listen better.
Why would they warn Russia in advance lol
Because if they do destroy it. It is a bigger deal they called their shot russia couldn't stop it.
When did DW become a Russian spying agency?
Seit wann ist die DW ein russischer Geheimdienst?
May be warning civilians
Russia must be expecting this.
There can be many reasons. But:
They might hope Russia move their troops or some equipment to protect the bridge, making it easier for Ukraine in other locations.
They may try to get Russia to look bad, by saying the do something and then do it. It would make Russia look like they cannot protect anything.
They may be preparing alias, testing the water to see what reactions it might bring.
They may say it to keep Ukraine in the media, so that people do not forget that they are still in a war.
It might also just be someone talking themselves up, saying I know something therefore I am special, bla bla bla 🙂
We never know why, and a lot of war stories are like that, thus we can't really trust anything, so take everything with a pinch of salt.
America knocked out a bridge.

That bridge should have been gone two years ago.
It should never have been built
What do you mean the Russian annexed Crimea legally?
Ukraine is fearless and inventive, that bridge is going down sooner or later!
Ukraine is under some time pressure if they want to benefit from destroying the Kerch Bridge. Russia is building a railroad through Mariupol and down to Crimea. When this railroad is finished Russia will be less depended on the Kerch Bridge. Thus Ukraine might only benefit for a year or so. And the need equipment they can uses in that window, if they are dreaming of retaking Crimea. But NATO seams to be holding back support to the detriment of Ukraine. 😢
Honestly the situation does not look good right now.
After they've finished that railroad, how do you think they will protect it against, say, multiple drone attacks? It's quite a stretch to keep intact.
The railway is already there. I think they are building a highway. But this route is still much closer to the frontline than Kerch Bridge meaning the northern route is much easier to bomb with cheaper ammunition. If you get closer to the frontlines, drones and regular artillery have more access.
Careful that’s a real story you’re telling
There have been multiple train accidents and derailments in Russia in recent weeks… nothing is guaranteed in Russian logistics
That new railroad uses several smaller bridges, all easy to take out. Ukraine will make the railroad unusable as soon as Russia has spent resources to build it
But According to sun/bbc the bridge was fully destroyed 1years ago.

The third's the charm...so they think
Ukraine will focus on refineries & then try to use few resources on creating distractions too; the bridge attack is one of the distractions

They don't have to hit the bridge supports. They can hit the support cables
Which support cables?
@nuorigin
"They can hit the support cables"?
A cursory examination of the Kerch Bridge makes it blindingly clear that it is NOT a suspension bridge, so there are NO "...support cables."
The bridge supports are vertical members, which would be highly vulnerable to a horizontal impact from a 'Storm Shadow', or 'Taurus', cruise missile, or indeed one of the French glide bombs in Ukrainian service.
A sea drone with some form of plane-polarised charge would be another option.
One way or another, that bridge has a very limited life expectancy.
