Thank you. I’m 83, and usually a Clown in a group visiting the oldies in nursing homes, and we visit a couple of local Hospitals. Most importantly, we are all Volunteers, and some of our Members are still working.
As the resident idiot (remarkably BUBBLES stands out), I do some magic, but it has to be very big, colourful and delivered with a story. Routine (pardon the pun!) hand and card tricks just don’t work, because many of our clients simply can’t see what we’re doing - in one visit, I tip a small jug of strawberry milkshake down a black 6inch diameter tube being held up by a Nurse. A few magic words and “hey presto”, I tip the tube upside down and the milk has magically become a colourful shower of a couple of dozen balloons.
The Nurse’s mates, having escaped being sucked in for the trick, are caught out with “oh bother, how did that happen? The beauty of it is that with just the amount of fuss being added to her discomfort, even the patients with varying levels of dementia get to enjoy the routine. NO, I’m NOT a genius, but if we can get through in one piece, our collective job has been done. As much as I do magic, and a couple of the others have an occasional trick we all sing and do silliness.
When several, quite often so, members of the Audience come up and thank us, the pain and discomfort of keeping my 83yo carcase on its feet and still working just evaporates. Several years back we were doing a Christmas gig, and I was performing right next to a 4 place table, the elderly gentleman sitting right next to me, who had not once seemed to not really “there” (we never judge, nor do, we make assumptions) turned to me, put up his hand and with a firm grip, said “thanks, mate, I really enjoyed that”. Never assume; the Nurse who was in charge of his group told me that he just swings in and out of awareness of his surroundings, and is ALWAYS the perfect Australian bush gentleman.
Another group who have asked for us (I haven’t spoken to the lead lady, so I’ll leave the organisation’s name name out - they are ALL volunteers for a group which helps children in or from dangerous, violent and otherwise bad situations.
The previous year I met a pair of identical twins. Their Grandmother has raised them from them having been dumped on her doorstep only a few weeks old. Just on puberty (I have gaughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters, I know the signs), these young ladies were brilliant with the younger kids and the ladies preparing food. I said so to Grandma, and that’s how I was given the story. I named them “Pinky” and “Purple” for the colours of their tops, I’m certain they changed their tops over time, just to confuse me.
The latest gig we did for these people was for 2023 Christmas. The twins were back, fortunately with slightly different tops. This time obviously turning from those delightful tomboys. Phew. Still the same, they
were right back into it, and the pretty young lady they had brought along was brought right into things too, and mixed tops again. In the end, we couldn’t compete with Santa Clause and quietly made our exit off stage, unobtrusively we thought - one of the twins was running up the driveway with, as loudly as she could (and THAT’S saying something). “Bubbles, please wait “. I don’t know which twin, but the hug was fabulous. The World is not ready for these beautiful young ladies.
The biggest problem we face is how to pace out our work (60 to 90 minutes’ showtime, plus setup and knockdown really can be a morning’s exercise).
My only problem with getting to the Clowning gigs is lack of transport. When my wife of 51 years died, my health went bad. I was only 12 when my Grandma died and Grandad was dead in only three months. They were obviously still in love, as we were and I still am 10 years later. I was worried that the loss of the lifeblood of my life was going to do the same with me. My youngest daughter told me that I was moving in, so she could keep an eye on me. BUT, we have 5 drivers and only 4 cars - 3 studying (daughter is 47 and Graduates this year). I’m still out a car. So Clowning has to take a break. Dammit

What a wonderful gift you bring to the residents! How disappointing it must be to not be able to do it for lack of a car at the moment. Years ago, before I learned Ventriloquism, I taught Spanish classes at nursing homes. Same as you, I never could tell who was “there” and who was “out to lunch” so to speak, and of course some days it varied and I was surprised by the comments that revealed they’d been listening all along. One day I was told by one lady just how glad she was that they were still being considered worth pouring into. Absolutely! What a treasure.
I’m sure in your time you’ve likely seen clowning and live performances ebb and flow in popularity. It seems to have had quite a resurgence after years of isolation and quarantine.
It’s great work if you can get it and the people you encounter can form such a meaningful part of your life story 💕
So sorry for the loss of your dear wife. I’m glad you still give others a reason to smile despite it all. Good on you ☺️
Thank you so much for sharing with me today. I too am smiling because of you
