Yeah, concrete ships were a crazy idea, but they worked. At least some of the time. I belive most concrete ships commissioned by the US government during WWI never really got to see any time in the war, but they were a creative design. Check out some of the comments below from Carl. He's talks about some of the history of the cement boats in the great lakes, and how they didn't weather very well.
Another great video! I was thinking the same thing about that shark before you mentioned it at the end. I was thinking somebody must've fed it and it was expecting a free meal. It seemed kind of menacing. That would have made me nervous.
Yeah, that shark was a little crazy. I think it was a juvenile that was used to being feed by divers. It’s a good example of why not to feed the sharks. 😀

Back in the late 60s here on the great lakes there was a fad building fero cement boats the skill involved and the cure of the cement determined their life span Some are still around most only lasted a season or two In the winter any moisture in the cement would freeze and in the spring there was hair line cracks all along the water line They tried fixing them with a layer of fiberglass on the outside Nearly all being diy projects One had to take in the cost of material building and the cost of breaking it up Most diyers switched to another mediam Have a great day!

Another great one. How many wrecks are at tech depths? And are there any tech operators on the island? Just got my ANDP Heliotrox certification and I’m hooked on the deep stuff
Congrats on getting your Heliotrox cert!! There aren't any actual tech operators in the Virgin Islands on either St. Thomas or St. Croix. However, some shops will do fills for divers and run the occasional group trip for deeper dives. Getting air and O2 above 40% is relatively straightforward, but trimix may be a challenge. Most of the wrecks that I'm aware of on St. Thomas are within the recreational limits of 130' (40m), but you could plan a deco dive and spend more time on them. I believe there is more tech diving on St. Croix because you can swim out from the beach in a couple of locations and be in 3000' of water on a wall dive. Not that you'd want to go that deep. :-) For more in-depth information on tech diving in the US Virgin Islands, I'd reach out to Mark at Nevin Scuba (nevinscuba.com). He's my tech instructor and does a lot of tech diving in the USVI, both OC and CCR. On St. Thomas, I'd check with the Red Hook Dive Center (www.redhookdivecenter.com), and on St. Croix with St. Croix Ultimate Bluewater Adventures (www.stcroixscuba.com/). If you haven't looked at diving the wrecks around Florida's West Palm Beach area, I'd add that to the list. There is a large technical diving community in the area, and shops run regular tech trips. Hi guys totally jealous awsome video awsome dive The water temp last week 35 f When you first mention shark The silloet of the wreck in the back ground looks like a megladon sneaking up ! They built a fish tug here out of fero cement it sank comming up the harbour they made it off hauled it out fixed it took it to Georgian Bay sank again still on the bottom 150 ft crew swam ashore
The fero cement ships have a really interesting history. Kind of amazing they floated at all. At least the crew of the tug you mentioned was able to swim ashore. Thanks again for all the support!

Wow. Great information. Thanks for sharing. Never thought about the cement breaking up in the winter if it had any moisture, but makes total sense.
