  • Jump back to June, cold temperatures, great company, and some awesome birds and bird photography in Australia! I finally had time to edit a vlog from our bird photography road trip.
    We drove from Melbourne to Wangaratta, then all the way to the South Australian Mallee and back! 3500km later, we were exhausted, tired, cold, but happy! Not everything worked out as planned, but in the end, we got some great bird photos!
    Let me know in the comments how you liked this bird photography video and if you wanna see more behind the scenes stuff.
    Have you seen my series Bird Photography Secrets Revealed yet? There I look at the fundamentals you need to know to take amazing bird images.

    Hi Jan,
    Wow! What fun! Totally enjoyed your expedition…being able to see the incredibly beautiful landscapes of Australia was a treat. (I’m in US) And so many colorful birds! Just Fantastic. The Major Mitchell Cockatoos just melt my heart! Your images and filming are always superb! Thank you for braving the cold to share the beauty and adventures with us!
    I did notice in the behind the scenes shots that you were not using flash; yet your images still have your “signature look”. Can you elaborate on that? Thank You!
    ~Dana

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dana Campbell glad you enjoyed it Dana! I don’t use flash that often, actually always try to avoid it, unless it’s necessary. Like I said in my exposure video, the flash doesn’t affect the images that much. It’s all about exposing correctly. In this trip in the hides I would’ve loved to use the flash, as there was a lot of shadow and sun, but you couldn’t fit it. Hence I could only use a few images where the light and background was decent. With my flash I would’ve had a higher hit rate. Generally it’s all about positioning yourself well and exposing properly. That’s the foundation of a good image. The flash just adds an extra bit of life to the image when it’s possible to use it
      And some of it is editing too, I had to use a few more layers in photoshop to lighten some shadows and darken some highlights that the flash would’ve balanced otherwise

      That’s great to hear! With some meal worms. I have written a whole ebook on using different methods to attract birds. The major Mitchell’s are pretty nomadic and you kinda randomly encounter them in the mallee areas of Victoria and south Australia.
