Hi friends! In this video I show you how to play the cowbell part combined with the beat for "Honky Tonk Women," by the Rolling Stones.
I recently joined an all female Rolling Stones tribute band called Honky Tonk Women, and this is how I play the two parts simultaneously. - เพลง
Thanks Mindee - that was the clearest demonstration of that I've seen!
Thank you friend! 😊 I do my best to make my lessons understandable for all levels of drummers.
I know nothing about drumming but love that song and intro! Thanks
Thank you!
That cowbell, snare, tom and hat intro is so iconic and memorable.
I love this intro. You know it the moment you hear it.
Very good lesson. I’ve been playing it incorrectly. Your a wonderful teacher
Thank you!
Awesome lesson, good job Mindee
Thank you!
Finally THE explanation! Thx you
Thank you!
This drum intro is my religion.
It is so fun. 😊
When I was 8, my mom's girlfriend gave me her old 5 piece set of Ludwigs. I learned how to play listening to Charlie Watts. Picked up his habit of stopping the hi hat beat on the down stroke of the snare. Whenever I tried to play other music, I had a hard time doing it because of that habit. Thought I was crazy. Didn't have videos back then. I picked it up by ear. So, when I finally seen him doing it, I felt a lot better about my drumming skills, and my ear for it. I'm 56 now. Wish I still had those old Ludwigs. 🤣
Thanks for the lesson! It’s good to see someone offering a free lesson, not a link to their website asking for money.
Well thanks!! I love teaching as much as I love playing. 😊 (I do have those links as well of course...Patreon, website, I give private lessons, ect )
Dang, I wanna hear the whole song now.
She must have a FEVER!
Excellent video!
Glad you liked it!
I love your demo!
Even though it's not the studio version of the song...Your playing captures the Studio Version!
I think the cowbell was added as a dub over the regular drum playing by Charlie Watts. But Your version is better than anyone else I've heard on YT.
You are correct the cowbell was an overdub in the studio version. This is a demo on how to recreate the song live when you don't have an extra person to play the cowbell/lead singer doesn't want to. I play in a Stones Tribute so had to figure out how to make both happen at the same time.
A bit ironic, I had a dream I was playing that on the drums last night. At 65 years old just got a set of acoustic drums. Better late than never.😊
So Glad I found this. thank you so much Mindee for the clarity
Thank you Mindee! This is just what I was looking for. I appreciate you writing out the music, counting it out, and playing it.
Thank you for the feedback! I appreciate hearing that my lessons are helping others. 😊
Excellent description! I've played that for years.. but now realize i've been counting it in wrong the whole time! I thought they were doing some weird syncopated timing intro.. but its just so much simpler - just starting on the one! Doh!
I still play it the same way but now it's dead simple to count in thanks to you! Thank you!!!
If you want a fun exercise.. the way I play it is this:
- have the cowbell to the left of your hats, same height
- play the cowbell pattern with your left hand
- play the drum pattern with your right hand.
Its perfect as Charlie always drops the hat beat on the snare hit anyway.. and its a super simple 'one hand' pattern of 8ths on hat and snare on the backbeat.
- the cowbell goes straight quarters on the chorus.
I play lots of patterns this way with the left on percussion and the right covering the drum part.. eg Footloose, etc.
Thanks! When playing it with the band I do it similar as you described, except my cowbell is with my right hand, and my left is playing open, doing the 1/8th notes on the hi-hat, dropping down for the snare on 2 + 4. 😀
@@DrummerMindeeJorgensen yes I meant to mention that.. cowbell on the right oit left .. works either way depending on you your preference :)
Brilliant just brilliant! So clearly explained 😊
Thank you! ❤️
❤ Stones 👍
This is so awesome! Thank you for posting this!
You're welcome and thank you for watching. 😊
Learning the song, this was so well explained and helpful. Thanks!!!
Thank you, I am glad you found it helpful. 😊
LOVE THIS>>....thanks again MIndeeeeeeeeee...great song when I was young
Nice job Mindee and thanks. Great breakdown of this classic. Well done.
Thank you🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Mindee, I'll really wow them at the next gig! Well maybe not, but at least I'll know I'm playing the intro right after a few decades of not playing it right. Thanks again.
Thank you! 😊
Thanks thanks
Very, very good Mindee!!!!
😊😋🤗I LOVE YOU!!!😂🤣😂
Great instruction video! I just picked up a cowbell finally and this is the first song I’m trying with it!
Thank you!
Thanks for breaking that down, really helped.
Vielen Dank!! Genau das hab ich gesucht!!
Nice one x
Right on!
Very nice lesson, i like to play this song.
Thank you Mindee! exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you, good to hear.
Thank you! Too many drum tutorials with multiple drummers defeats the purpose
You're welcome!
Excellent! I've just been working on figuring this out and your video explains it perfectly!
Glad it helped, and appreciate the compliment. I try my best to explain things so everyone can follow along and understand. 😊
Thank you… Why is it the simplest of beats elude me? I have to remember to count. Thanks , Mindy!
Thank you!
hi great video, i usually play cowbell with my right hand ,2 and 4 on snare left hand, bass drum on 1, and on and 3, hi-hats play 8ts with left foot that works good for me,but still a great tutorial,
Thank you so much you explained is the best☘️☘️☘️
Thank you friend! 😊
nice and very well explained. will help me alot.
Thank you!! I love to help. :)
Excellent , nicely done
Thank you 😀
Great breakdown, it helps immensely. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! 😊
Glad to hear it helped! Thank you for the comment!
Parfait bien vu 👍👍
Great lesson, I usually get lost when trying to learn but I didn't with you♥️👍
That is the perfect compliment to a teacher, thank you! 😊
Great video - thanks for breaking it down for me. I also am looking for a way to emulate that groove without having a dedicated cow-bell player. I suppose (if I was better at using all the goodies built into my e-drums, I could instantly create a loop of the cowbell and then play along with it... but that's a big IF for my techno-challenged brain... ha) 😅
Thanks! This way is fun, and the next step I took was playing the hi hat 1/8th notes with my left hand, moving it to the snare for 2 and 4. 😀
She likes the stones.. shes a good drummer.. shes pretty.. she has great legs.. I think I'm in love
I'm a tiny bit confused about the bass drum. It seems like it's on the one and the and of four and the and of one. I'm a total beginner!
Hello. In this beat the bass is on 1, the and of 3, the and of 4. Kick - snare - - kick snare kick. - are each an 1/8 note rest. I hope this helps, if not I can try to film something to send you. :)
@Drummer Mindee Jorgensen thank you! I have since learned that my understanding of "and" was wrong. It's before the beat, not after.
You from Cincinnati?
I am not.
Its a son clave on cowbell? Maybe???
❤ain't she pretty?
When I do it I play 8ths on the hi hat with my foot for a fuller, richer more complete sound. And forgive me, it’s women not woman.
Now a days I play the hi hat 1/8ths with my left hand, moving down to hit the snare on 2 and 4. 😊
@@DrummerMindeeJorgensen that sounds interesting. I would like to see a video of that. Best wishes
I'll get a video at the next gig or rehearsal. It works great, it keeps to Charlie's signature style of leaving the hi hat off the 2 and 4.
@@DrummerMindeeJorgensen excellent 👍
