Raymond Dionne This was only the prologue of things to come. When CART teams switched over for shortly after, old IRL teams were blown away. On the driver side only Sam Hornish was capeable competing against the CART guys.

Scott Sharp did okay. He still won three times after the Penske crossover in 2002. I think Buddy Lazier still could have done okay (did pass Vasser in the 2000 race before Vasser's late pit stop with a few laps left and did beat Franchitti and Kanaan in the 2005 Indy 500 even though they had faster cars) but he was too loyal to Hemelgarn like Ward Burton was too loyal to Bill Davis and it sunk him. If Greg Ray could have stopped crashing, he might have been able to weather the storm (he did have the speed to duel people like Brack and Montoya pretty well, until his inevitable crashing...) Hornish survived largely because he went to Penske. Had he stayed at Panther, he would have gone down much like Lazier I suspect. The rest of them, however? Not much talent to speak about (since I think Al Unser, Jr. and Eddie Cheever were pretty much washed up at this point.)

the IRL sucked. I love how irl apologists nitpick and point out the very few instances of original irl drivers winning a race or passing a CART driver as proof that irl drivers were somehow as good. A race win here or there or a pass every so often doesn't mean crap. Lazier, sharp, Under-a-cheever, greg ray, ward, tony stewart or any of those guys were never as good as any of the top CART drivers of the day. Sharp and Lazier had PLENTY of chances to prove themselves to top owners in CART before the split. They were both mid-packers at best and proved it regularly. Sham hornish was only good on ovals and usually only the foot-to-the-floor type ovals. Additionally he only ever won watered-down Indycar championships. Ugh, thank god the irl is relegated to the trash bin now.

@@arenasnow "If Greg Ray could have stopped crashing" hahahahahahah :D That's exactly why he sucked. He was in WAY over his head. Greg Ray couldn't handle big time pressure ever. It showed in 2000 and 2001 when he had to deal with defending his position against GOOD race car drivers. The entire crew of IRL regular drivers through 2002 was full of scrubs!

I like the intro to the broadcast of this race. It tells you who won the Indy 500 in past years before 2001. Tony Stewart did the "Memorial Day Double", meaning he competed in this race and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte the exact same day.

What an amazing way to open the 21st Century at the Greatest Spectacle In Racing, Juan Pablo Montoya dominates the 2000 race and becomes the first rookie to win the Indy 500 since Graham Hill in 1966. The following year, another rookie Brazilian Helio Castroneves wins it in his first start and goes on to win it again in 2002.

Okay, I get why Castroneves was penalized for switching lanes and cutting off Stewart in the outside lane, but de Ferran stayed in the inside lane and did what he was supposed to do. The ruling on this doesn't make any sense. BOTH Castroneves and de Ferran were penalized and ordered to go behind Stewart, but it does not seem to me that de Ferran did anything wrong. Only Castroneves. This is important since this is what ultimately decided the race and gave Castroneves the lead over de Ferran after Stewart pitted on the next caution. It seems like the IRL officials should have given the lead to de Ferran, placed Stewart 2nd, and dropped Castroneves to 3rd, which probably would have given de Ferran the win. I don't have *so much* of a problem with de Ferran being placed behind Stewart, but Castroneves was the offender here and was allowed to stay ahead of de Ferran despite making what was ruled to be an illegal move to cut him off. Was this solely because they were trying to increase the odds of a Tony Stewart win since he was an IRL alumnus and the other contenders were still in CART? The 2002 result makes one wonder.
The problem I end up having is how much Helio is hyped for his 3 wins (as if he's close to any of the rest of them in ability) and gets talked about like an all-time legend when he only took the lead on track to win once (2009) and was passed by the winner now three times (de Ferran in '03, Hunter-Reay in '14, and Sato in '17.) And how smug he gets when saying he wouldn't trade any of his wins for a championship, even though it is a major problem in his career that he never won a title when FIVE of his teammates did (de Ferran, Hornish, Power, Pagenaud, and Newgarden.) We already knew there was a reason to doubt 2002. Now looking at this more carefully than I did in the past, there's a reason to doubt 2001. Either Castroneves cutting off Stewart in the pits was illegal or it was not. Since they were judging it as illegal, he should have been placed behind de Ferran, rather than effectively being given the win here. He just keeps looking less and less impressive the more closely I look at his career.

Scott Sharp crashed because like all of the original IRL drivers he sucked and couldn't handle the pressure like a top line driver. Mark Jizz-more didn't have a chance against the CART drivers regardless of his gearbox issues. Though the whole reason he had issues was because of Kelly's crappy race team preparations. This race was soooooo amusing because it just showed what all Indycar race fans had known since 1996 - CART was a better series through and through and Tony George's crappy IRL series was full of second-rate drivers that couldn't hack it in CART. All the ABC announcers were such IRL shills and you could tell they were so bummed out at the results. CART 1st-6th with Greg Ray doing his usual wall dance when under pressure!! LOL Thanks FTG! CART killed itself and never was the better series, explain why both CART and Champ Car went bankrupt and IRL didn't... Explain why CART lost venues, teams and drivers every year since the split? You're a typical CART fan and typical CART fans do hate the IRL. You know what destroyed CART? The fact they kept adding road/street courses and lost ovals every year since 1979. TG would not have felt necessary to build the IRL, if CART just kept racing on lots of ovals. Guess when CART finally started racing on ovals more and more? Indeed, two years AFTER the IRL already existed in 1998. It didn't work out, weird huh? Going to Texas without testing, while Gossage asked multiple times if CART wanted to test before the race weekend? Guess what, the crowd was as thin as it could be and the race discontinued. Yes, indeed man, CART was the better series!!!

Robin Schippers typical idiot IMS fanboy/placefan response. Keep telling yourself all that garbage. If the IRL was soooooo great then why is the current IRL/indycar series a virtual carbon copy of what CART was??? Answer: Because TG just wanted CART all along. Now all you have is a watered down version of what was the best version of the sport ever. Look for yourself idiot: More road/street courses than ovals - check: more foreign than american drivers - check: multiple engine manufacturers - check. Get a clue.
