Jaffer Sharrif of the Cong party who was railway minister was fully and solely responsible for turning good operational perfectly working steam locos to scrap which would be benefiting his community which had a large no of scrap dealers who had no interest in any heritage or nostalgic value, they were purely metal scavengers. India during the mid 90,s destroyed many such wonderful locos which could have been preserved and would be in working condition like in USA and UK where steam is so much alive and well preserved.
God bless those individuals who stepped in to preserve the last few locos and the steam shed at Rewari.
Unlike UK which has over well over 500 plus steam locos in very good condition, the barely 8-9 locos in India must be preserved for as long as possible, their value cannot be judged. UK has even built their last brand new steam loco as late as in 2009, the Tornado ! The National Rail Museum in York has so many steam locos in pristine condition.

Chittaranjan locomotive works manufactured so many broad gauge steam locomotives.. this still have all the sketches and drawings. They should manufacture 1 new broadgate steam locomotive.. recently I saw one video in other country they manufacture the whole new steam locomotive for tourism purpose and they ran it on 100km per hour. India can also do... Old restore steam locomotives are not capable to run on maximum speed. All over the world railways are bringing back their black beauty on main line. Indian Railway should restart the old historical trains with steam as a special trains.. like golden temple mail, grand trunk Express, Howrah mail, Orient Express etc...

India has never appreciated its transport history as it was controlled by British and then Anglo Indians for too many years. This indifference and madness was hoisted on an unsuspecting population who also had scant knowledge of the value of steam as it is appreciated in western countries. India is about short term profit. As long as someone is making money, it must proceed with the most ludicrous decisions. Look at the number of steam locomotives manufactured at Chittaranjan, that have been preserved. Earlier and more valuable examples manufactured in western countries were relegated to the scrapheap.India remains a joke internationally. Unfortunately, the younger population are poorer for the decisions made in folly by their elders.
