New Sun is firmly in the mould of reading like fantasy at first but is eventually revealed as far future si-fi.

House of Suns was one of my introductions to Space Opera and it blew me away. One of, if not my favorite (i need to re read it as its been awhile). I think it has the character exploration your hoping for.
As for Neal Asher, his Polity stuff is a great mix of Space Opera, Military SF and Cyberpunk. And the Cormac books have a great character arc where the main character learns a lot about his world and himself over time. Great video and suggestions!

Terminal City by Reynolds. A bit of EVERYTHING. House of Suns, a favorite. Also Against A Dark Background and The Algabraist by our lamented late Iain Banks and Eon and Eternity by our equally lamented Greg Bear.

Lord Valentine's Castle has been on my shelf for 40 years and I haven't got around to reading it yet. House of Suns was great, but I think I like the Revelation Space series more.

Wow 40 years? 😁 I'll try to read (or listen to it) during the spring. I have to read Revelation Space then. And thank you for watching 😊

Great list. I read House of Suns, which I enjoyed quite a while ago. I thought I read Lord Valentine's Castle, but I don't see it marked as read in my list. Your description of it sounded like something familiar to me. I've been wanting to try the Honor Harrington series, but haven't gotten around to it yet. My favorite space opera series that I've read so far is the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. Those books were a lot of fun.

Thank you for watching Staci! I have only read the two prequels to the Miles Vorcosigan saga, the books focusing on his parents. They were absolutely AWESOME and I think Bujold is a real genius 🔥🔥🔥

Better be ready to spend some time in the Honor Harrington series! Fortunately most of them are in the Library. Definitely start with On Basilisk Station. You will be engulfed in ti and then you can read several spinoffs as well. A ton of reading in them all!

My favorite far future space opera is the Xeelee sequence books by Steven Baxter. Those books just blow my mind.

Reynolds is a genius. Almost all his space operas are just incredible. Charles Stross writes in a similar vein and I group these two together. This is a completely realized future with great characters and huge ideas. Science - NOT fantasy.

It may not be far future but it gets there eventually in the Death Becomes Her series by Michael Anderle is one of the best sci fi series I have personally read and the concepts are pretty unique. Might want to try it!

Try the british writer Peter F. Hamilton with the The Night's Dawn Trilogy and the Commonwealth Saga. Another great story line is the Wanderer series by Simon Goodson. Enjoy

I'll also put Goodson's books in my wishlist! Thank you for your recommendations!

I REALLY enjoyed pandora's star and judas unchained, but the void trilogy drove me up a wall I HATED Edeard with everything in me, and the just... BLAND villains.
Give me MorningLightMountain 100 times over "generic steven king bully but psychic"

Anyone that cuts a video on top Space Opera that fails to put E.E. Smith's Lensmen series at the top is a poseur. Smith _invented_ Space Opera, and NO ONE has done it better than him (try as some might, with Yoshiki Tanaka being the best one going with _Legend of the Galactic Heroes)_ even with the advantages of being feature films, long-running prestige television, comic adaptations by master comic authors and artists, audio dramas, etc.
Because Smith, in the Lensman series, _invented the modern day Combat Information Center_ used by modern navies worldwide. No successor has any anything like that level of influence.

This video is not a ranking or even a dissertation on the intrinsic value of space opera books, so I really don't understand where did you get that idea.
I asked for reading suggestions by giving specific parameters and mentioned the results. That is all.
I don't like the tone of your comment, honestly. I implore you to keep such vitriolic, and completely unwarranted, takes away from this community.

Start the Honor Harrington series with the 2nd book, Honor of the Queen. The 1st book kind of sucks.,
