It was a great airplane.... but..... maintaining the MA-1 system was a nightmare. The F-106's Hughes MA-1 system was a "consolidated system" composed of the: (1) Radar system: (2) CN&L (Communications / Navigation & Landing Systems): (3) Computer (4) AFCS (Automatic Flight Control System: (5) Power. Without the presence of Hughes Tech Reps on the flight line, the average MA-1 flight line techs were hard pressed to "make the airplane "right". As time went by, "things" did improve (due to "experience") but it was a "messy presentation". As time went by, "things" did improve (due to our "experience") but it was an up-hill battle.... a very difficult time. Having been there and done that, as an MA-1 flight line tech at: (1) Minot for the winter of '60" and then (2) Selfridge where I was in D Flight with tail # 58-0798 (which is now a "Plane On A Pole" at a large Army hospital in Texas).... and then ran the system mock-up and then moved to the Nevada desert).
This set up honestly reminds me of how the Soviets put a gun pod on the 3rd gen MiG-21s. Just instead of a double barrel 23mm it's a rotary 20mm. Heck the F-102/106 isn't that far off of the MiG-21. I'd even say they are more comparable then the F-4.
why? would take to much space the one oh 6 had internal AIR to AIRS this system and the M61 is superior to your m6. this gun pod was a very simple and effective solution to a problem the M6 idea you have would i think require a complete redesign of what was a plane no longer in production but still in service.

great video, thanks
I wonder if the AN M3 20mm single-barrel cannon could have been installed on the 106, maybe 4 guns - like the F-8 Crusader.

Nice video.
