The thing I love about Mastadon is that the subject matter of their songs are based on my favorite subjects. Cryptozooology, prehistoric animals, the ocean, ships, etc. Awesome visuals they put into all their songs. Great band.
I actually made that into a little over 5 minutes on a loop, when i first heard it, played it through my headphones and played it hundreds of times because its dark, and has alot of emotion. Plus, the fills are fucking perfect, and its just an amazing jam flow off the top of the head im sure he just thought up jamming one day.

The Red Baron, Oblivion, Curl of The Burl, Stargasm, Colony of Birchmen, Sleeping Giant, Iron Tusk, Hearts Alive, Blood and Thunder, Trainwreck, Work Jorse, and March of the Fire Ants. All of which are just complete masterpieces alone. But, these albums each say a whole lot. I love how they separate their albums in aural elements and give each a different back story and structure.
The intro to this song is one of the best intros i have ever heard. So dark, so fucking perfect. Maybe im the only one who feels that way being a drummer, but its absolutely fucking rad. I could listen to it on loop for a solid hour.
and this album has a ton of great ones on it so, to agree and say this is the best one is a stretch. but the banjo lick straight into metallica-esque jamming is epic!!
Honestly the best and most underrated song on the album in my opinion. Scene kids may love Blood And Thunder but Mastodon fans know this is where it's at.

@@JayBigDadyCy Tbf, I think a lot has to do with mixing. Lars was pretty good back then, but they always mixed the drums to be very quiet during the first 3 albums for whatever reason
@@verstarkt2192 Eh. I mean, if you think a transition riff is stealing then be my guest. It is the same riff, but I think bands are allowed to show tribute to their biggest influences. Whether people like it or not, Metallica is a very big influence to most bands and they like showing it. I never thought of this riff ss Mastodon "stealing" from Metallica. It's just a riff that fit the song that they used.
I have been listening to Mastodon for like three hours now. Brent, Troy, Bill and Brann really know how to make some fucking beautiful music! And Brann's drumming is to die for!
when i listened to this song for the first time i was at 1.22 like "dafuq?..." then at "1.26,holy shit!!!"best bridge i've ever heard in my life, hands down
@NickGimacutU Not to mention the Melvins (who Mastodon have covered and played with live) and High On Fire (Mastodon was formed after the members met at a HOF show.)
I'm actually glad that they played the songs they did. I wasn't expecting any of them except for Black Tongue and Dry Bone Valley so it was cool to hear a bunch of unexpected songs. They're probably tired of playing Blood and Thunder and Oblivion.
For me , Metal and Hard Rock was Just DEAD ......Then came the MASTODON and Changed Everything ...the BEST Sounding Prog MEtal Sludge Band in the Universe . One of the Best Bands of All times .
Seems like a lot of youngsters are listening to Mastodon lately and instead of being a metal elitest I can just introduce you to similar artists. Baroness, Kylesa, Red Fang, Black Tusk, Sleep, Isis, Pelican,The Sword, Electric Wizard, Orchid and Kyuss are all similar in genre and fantasy background. Obviously don't sound the exact same but I get a similar stokage from them.
@stuthorr when I first heard this song i was amazed.! I was doing the dishes and was listening to Leviathan at that time. And when i heard that lick, mastofon had me hooked up for the rest of my life. the sadest thing about this story is that none of my friends like mastodon. but hey, who gives a F***, I like them and that's what really matters. I saw them at their gig at the Hove Festival in Norway and that was one of the best live esperiences i've ever had!
I am 16 and listen to Mastodon, to my opinion, Baroness has one song I like. You see, the standards of music have changed quite alot, and to my opinion if us youngsters were to start listening metal out of the sudden; than they should start out with something such as Iron Maiden or Guns 'n Roses. Then by time some harder stuff sow they can get to expiriment and found out their favorite sub-gènre.
Awsome legendary sound that's is mastadon..saw them perform this live in Newcastle and sounds brill live ..wee do u begin to write sutch awsome an metal sound..other bands take note
@UKRCyanide Yeah, and the second guitar ads with two more notes to the harmony. And Sanitarium is in E key compared to Megalodon's D if I'm not mistaken. I really like that "eastern" adden note :D
@DillingerEscapeMan it does actually, but Mastodon didn't record with a metronome on this album, so it'll drop and raise ever so slightly in their songs
The thing I love about Mastadon is that the subject matter of their songs are based on my favorite subjects. Cryptozooology, prehistoric animals, the ocean, ships, etc. Awesome visuals they put into all their songs. Great band.
At 1:20 I just imagine Brent looking around all confused for a second like "This was where this was going... Right?"
It'd be hysterical if they all stopped and started yelling at brent. "Oh. I got it." then they break out into that amazing riff. .-.
simplethunder You can really see Brent's roots as a banjo player peeking through in that riff
Exactly, even sometimes his live solos display that chicken picking at its best.
Axel Alvarez not exactly chicken picking.. but definitely hybrid picking!
Gay
I've always loved how the guitar riff at 1:20 turns into a country lick just before the rest of the band explode back into the song :D
I like to imagine that Mastodon recorded this album on a pirate ship in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle during a hurricane.
And that 1:20 riff was Brent briefly remembering Alabama while on the deck
Wtf
Wtf
Didn’t they?
Wait, that's not how they recorded this album?
I'm a guitarist, but I absolutely love the drums in the intro of this song. One of my all-time favorites
Drummer here and same! Been my favorite intro for many years.
The drums are awesome on almost every mastodon song, Brann Dailor is one of the best in the business.
1:20 best unexpected Mastodon lick ever.
0:00 Sailing on suspicious waters

I once believed that metal and country could never be collaborated.
1:20
Mastodon made me believe.
1.20 Has there ever been more unexpected notes in metal music? Love it.
Ikr? They coulda used a banjo, and it would've been perfect. Love it.
+Jason Thacker they already did in divinations
That's one of the main reasons why I love this song and Mastodon in general, they're one of the few bands that can totally surprise me
You could enjoy Mr Bungle, then. Check out their debut album. Most random stuff in metal ever.
What's cool is Brent Hinds first instrument was the banjo and it clearly shows in his playing style.
The Red Baron, Oblivion, Curl of The Burl, Stargasm, Colony of Birchmen, Sleeping Giant, Iron Tusk, Hearts Alive, Blood and Thunder, Trainwreck, Work Jorse, and March of the Fire Ants. Megalostodon
Your real dad shut up
rude
mastolodon
Megalostodathan
Mastogalodon
Love how there music goes perfectly with there art work
Tyler is Hyper same
That's Moby Dick, a sperm Whale, not a Megalodon. The same album has a song named Leviathan however, so there's that.
I wot, their ain’t no song on this album called leviathan
The riff at 1:27 sounds like a sped up version of a riff in the Metallica song (welcome home) Sanitarium
Could not agree more.
that's called having Metallica as a big influence on your music
Better than Metallica
There was another song on this album with the riff from Call of Ktulu, I can't remember which one though.
Fenrir Lokison it's called hearts alive
The intro to this song is one of the best intros i have ever heard. So dark, so fucking perfect. Maybe im the only one who feels that way being a drummer, but its absolutely fucking rad. I could listen to it on loop for a solid hour.
My love for that intro arpeggio knows no limit.
1:27 definition of metal
Some killer melodies in this one. The knack for sound these guys have is amazing.
This was one of the best songs I've ever heard live by Mastodon.
this song is my favorite mastodon, the amazing guitar introduction that gives way to speed is the best
Favorite Mastodon song
Other than Blood Mountain, yh. Btw, the whole album.
and this album has a ton of great ones on it so, to agree and say this is the best one is a stretch. but the banjo lick straight into metallica-esque jamming is epic!!
1:20 dat random country lick and BOOM
Awaken
@notyuu totally, it's an iconic Brent Hinds riff
Honestly the best and most underrated song on the album in my opinion. Scene kids may love Blood And Thunder but Mastodon fans know this is where it's at.
Almost the best metal song I've heard in years!
I love that banjo-style riff Brent throws in there
Killer country lick @ 1:23 straight into the thrash, excellent.

34 people were slain by the mighty beast megalodon. Their friends and family dislike this song in their honor.
the Most Brilliant Band in the World .These Guys BLEW my MIND !!!
I saw Mastodon yesterday, in Lisbon - Portugal.
I have no words to describe how was it.
Take my word for it, this is one of THE best songs to mosh to 🤟🏽
At 1:28, that riff sounds like a shark is swimming after you👿😈\m/
This song is one of the best mastodon songs ever
This is one of my favorite Mastodon songs.
1:27 still the best riff i have ever heard

Thanks for that list! I have been on a tear with my Mastodon as of late, but I needed new bands to listen to with the same feel!
The riff at 2:27 is soooo good
It's very similar to the riff under the "cyanide he craves" section in the last baron
This is great, but that Live performance when Mr.Hinds has his throat infection, God that this so crazy and powerful.
01:26 riff, very Annihilator-ish to my ears.
Love it!
It's literally "Welcome Home, Sanitarium" lol. Not hating Mastodon, but it's almost the exact riff. Love the song nonetheless

Holy shitballs, listening to Once More 'Round the Sun and then this is insane. Both are fantastic !
love this stuff! and "sanitarium" is my favourite metallica-song, lol!
that country lick just makes the song. DAMN they are AWESOME!!
You should be glad to be one of the few people that listen to Mastodon instead of bashing other artists.
Give this man all of the upvotes!
Mastodon always has the best album art.
That intro is so trippy. It's so entrancing, it sucks you right into the song.
that country riff is what made me love this song
