Thanks for doing the breakdown! I've often wondered what the difference or differences were between the versions. I only have the arcade collection version for Switch so this was super neat!

I got the NES version when it was originally released for my birthday. ALL of my friends were so jealous! Music was great, graphics were amazing, challenge was perfect.
    Great vid!

Very good explanation. Even as a Salamander fan since NES days, I never fully understood the differences between versions.

One of my favourite SHMUPs ever.

I had no idea all of these variants existed. A concise and knowledge rich video that remains engaging throughout.

My first Konami shmup was Gradius 3, the PCE version graphical display looks so close to the snes entry of gradius 3, im gonna give that a try first

Searched for a video comparing versions of salamander, specifically thinking of the c64 version. Didn't even mention it existed haha

I had to look that up, and there is a version but wasn't developed or published by Konami. A company called Imagine released it. I had only focused on the versions that Konami worked on.

      The C64 version was amazing!

Yeah, there were versions for the Spectrum and Amstrad too. It always surprised me that there were never ports for the ST and Amiga. Incidentally, there was also a port for the Sharp X68000 that's supposedly excellent.

@@kyorin6526 Yes, it's staggering how good that port was given the limitations of the system.

Thanks for explaining everything, especially about the modern releases! I can't seem to find comprehensive lists of rereleases for any games except ones with obsessive fanbases, and all the variations of this game make the issue exponentially more complicated.

Glad you found it helpful. It's crazy how many variations there are. I first realized it when I picked up Salamander on PC Engine several years ago and realized that it was almost completely different from the NES Life Force that I was familiar with.

I actually prefer Salamander to Gradius. I love the biomechanical theme, and the gameplay is much more accessible, especially the version without the power up menu.

I like that version a lot better as well. It's much easier to recover after you die since the game gives you the multiple much more frequently.

To me, the MSX version is the best by far. Fuller, super complete, amazing story, lots of lore... May be the poorest in graphical terms, but playability and depth are sublime.

Salamander. I guess it has a more powerful mapper, you can have more options/multiples.

It's another case like Super Mario Bros USA.
