I think that environment has a lot to do with it. Take for example that the men you are meeting at the club are not looking for women to necessarily date. They are looking for women for the casual hookup. If that's your intention than you will find plenty at your disposal. In my experience I have found women in the places I frequent outside of the bars/clubs. Consider the market, the dog parks, work more often than not within reason. You dont want to go dipping your pen in the company ink. I think just about anywhere you don't have to put in the facade and you can be you. I also think what your cousin said is actually true. Its very off-putting when a woman just looks at you as an atm. Much like men in the club, women that treat men look for the transactional relationship. The podcast was very entertaining and interesting about what dating is like in Dubai.
