      Better if you aim for the thigh right above the knee. The knee is a low percentage small, slippery target, especially on that kind of exchange. You’ll not only stop the kick, you’ll often get a knockdown.

    The second one, where you step back is called a 'leg void' in fencing.
    Often people get hit anyways, because they don't move the whole leg - either:
    The foot moves back, bending at the knee, or
    The hips move back without lifting the foot properly.
    Alas, good footwork is hard.

    I learned that the heel kick we used in kung-fu can be used a low kick block. I prefer to ride the leg kick similar to the butt block, but I twist my lead leg and come up on the ball of my foot so the kick rides up a few inches higher on my leg than the kicker expected and it lands in my hand.

    Hey couch, so did i tae kwon do for about 12 years but recently got into MMA (before the end of the world) and on my first day my couch saw that i was standing in a bladed stance. He corrected me saying that if i stand bladed i would just eat leg kicks and i have also notice my boxing and clinchting doesn't work as well either in a bladed stance. So i stood more in a muay thai stance so that i could learn that style of fighting rather than just my own. However i am finding it hard to be able to move quickly and i generally find it more comfortable fighting bladed.
    Should i just carry on fighting square to my partner and get more use to it or is there away to make the bladed stance more effective for MMA?

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Stances change constantly and dynamically throughout an MMA fight as the situation changes. A side stance (or a bladed stance) has very specific uses (eg: side kicks, back kicks, philly shell) You won’t always be using those techniques. There’s no reason to lock up into a single position like that.
      You will always feel more comfortable doing what you are used to. But unless what you are used to is winning MMA fights, then you need to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

    Thanks for sharing this. The karate part makes much sense. Pretty cool to know.
    In Savate, we often use most of those moves, as we can't check kicks (don't know why).
    So the push kick, the dodging (though we keep the stance at all time to keep balance), the counter punch - by moving inward or laterally, kick the supporting leg and deflecting the kick (as holding is also not allowed, *shrug*) is often used to avoid a direct kick.

    The explanation of the reverse hand pulling isn't part of Taekwon-Do, but now I wish it was. Textbook explanation is simply to provide an Newtonian reaction to the punch going forward (not sure if it achieves that, but that's the official explanation from Choi's Encyclopedia).

    Hey Ramsey
    I watched this video about a month ago and yesterday we were drilling a combination ending with a leg kick and I don’t know why I just left my leg there to be kicked
    Maybe because it was the end of the night and my head was fried I didn't even think to myself “this hurts I should do something different” until I had taken about 10 or 12 leg kicks
    I feel very stupid now butt scooting backwards around my house

    @fabio1160 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Ramsay. This was illuminating!
    Since we are talking leg kicks, can I ask you something about them, that does not relate strictly to defending?
    What is the difference between low-kicks muay thai style, with the leg more or less straight, and other low kicks with the "snapping" motion of a round kick (bending / chambering your knee).
    I suppose they are two different tools for different jobs, but I can't quite figure out the relative advantages of each.

    The push kick can be aimed to the thigh of the leg that your opponent is using to kick you, but it's a technique that just happens in the moment, it's not like a shin check that you can do all day long. You can do this if you already have raised your shin to check, but your opponend delayed his kick.

      If you’re fighting a new southpaw fighter, throw head kicks at him with your right leg until he stops bothering you. If you are the new southpaw fighter, an orthodox fighter is going to attack your lead leg in very different ways at different angles than the basic outside leg kick from a closed stance shown in this video. However, if they stand directly in front of you while throwing a right inside leg kick at your lead leg, fire your left straight at his chin, not unlike what you see with the right hand at 2:09

    hey sir ramsey that low kick defense using the butt by lowering the body, is it possible to step the lead leg first, then lower the body, then using the lead hand for a stiff jab(probably twisting the shoulder to protect the chin) instead of takedowns?..

    First off thanks for your videos, the question i have is is there a way to have effective foot work if you can't do the traditional squish the bug for punches and kicks? I was trying to shadow box in my friends wrestling ring that was converted from a boxing ring but we put extra padding and because of that you sink in and I find it hard to put out the imaginary cigarette. Thanks again for the videos and thank you to any one who takes the time to answer my question if they do.

    Try this one ,move a little get alot ,turn your knee ,use your knee to stop his shin in the low kick not with your shin against shin use the knee to hit his shin ,you really only move a couple of inches ,move a little get alot
    ,he wont want to kick you like that again cos it will nearly snap his shin if he kicks you hard enough ,remember move a little ,get alot! and when you do a thigh kick use the part of your shin just below the knee ,1 to 2 inch area under the knee makes contact where the muscle splits ,and if you really wind that up you can turn your opponent totally upside down by going through both legs ,your using the part of the shin down near your foot ,,there's no power there ,well not much anyway ,, ,see the closer to the trunk means more power ,that's why elbows and shoulders are so devastating ,closer to the trunk ,it will feel alien when you 1st try to work it out but trust me persevere and you'll find a new power ,also try slap down their 1/2 punch 1st ,it lines you up for the kick nicely

    What about defenses for calf kicks? Some of these defenses wouldn't work as the kicking leg would be too low down.

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t be in position for a calf kick. An effective calf kick happens in one of 3 scenarios: 1. A standing fighter kicks the legs of a downed fighter. 2. Fighter A fakes an outside thigh kick, fighter B raises his lead leg to check, fighter A shoots his kick under the checking leg and targets the standing calf/ankle, sweeping his opponent. 3. Fighter A feints to one side then cuts a sharp angle around his opponent in order to kick him from behind in the calf, and/or sweep him.
      The defense: 1. Get up. 2. Be the one who acts instead of the one who reacts. 3. Don’t give your opponent angles like that, and make him pay for it when he tries.

      @@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 Heel is a super strong part of the body that's much better designed to absorb impact. Your foot is well reinforced with ligaments designed to absorb impact from the heel up through the funnel shaped tibia against a well reinforced structure of tissues and cartilage in the knee. If you compare that to the traditional check of taking lateral force on the shin(tibia), taking it on the heel is far superior.
