Sam is appealing to Christian annilationism, and not to the general Christian version of the afterlife: default immortal spirit so one can be blackmailed into heaven.
The idea of resurrection was exclusive to Jesus. The interpretation from it, is varied otherwise in Christianity.
A Moral Commander cannot reconcile this reality of unequal natural suffering so it's all mental masterb....n anyways.

    • @laurajarrell6187

@@fredbmurphy I'm sorry, but resurrection was absolutely not unique to Christianity. The main godess in ancient sumerian religion was (way before judaism, much less christianity, but in similar area) was hung on a stake, died , went to underworld and was resurrected 3 full days, (not the 'weekend', like jesus in the Bible,) by the god who wanted her as wife. And, like in zoroastrianism, the jews believed, still do, that they'll be resurrected when the messiah comes, it's why they require natural burial. And in hindu, again, much older than christianity, (in fact, it's the oldest religion in continuous practice) lord Shiva 'died to save humanity' and resurrected! I think that, too, may have been 3 days, but I'm not sure. To many ancient peoples, 3, 7, 8, and 40 were all 'magical' numbers. Virgin births claims were even more common. So, nope, nothing 'new' in biblical stories. 🥰✌

I'd like to echo the thanks of others for all the videos you've worked on over the years. It hasn't been wasted; there are untold numbers of people that you've helped by broadcasting these compilations. Many times for me it's helpful to go back to these snippets of whole videos to help clarify arguments, thought processes, without having to wade thru all the BS from the religious folks.
I do have a request, which I recognize may not be easily accomplished. But if you happen to have the details of the full debates/addresses, etc., could you post them in the descriptions? I can't tell you how many times I watch your videos and then want to watch the full thing, but it can often be a daunting task to discover who the people are, what the event was, what the topic of debate was, etc. Again, I realize that might not be easy (or even possible), but just thought I'd put that out there.
Many, many thanks for these vids. They help. And nothing that helps so many people is ever wasted.

While I agree that in some respects, the world benefits from the free exchange of ideas, people sitting in their homes, behind computers should not benefit from the work or intellectual rigor of others without adding little or nothing. Another claim is that since science has not been able to provide evidence of an afterlife, therefore there is not an afterlife. In my view, all religions have very silly beliefs associated with them. For my evidence that there is an existence beyond this one, I offer 1) the memories of some children of past lives, which sometimes provide checkable evidence 2) Some near-death accounts where the brain is not functioning, yet the person provides evidence that they could view and hear events, both near their bodies and at other locations 3) The evidence provided by evidential mediums of deceased persons, or souls, being aware of, and commenting on, events which took place since their physical death. 4) This one is necessarily anecdotal, but I have had dreams where I was talking with people I know who were deceased. These dreams were very clear and seemed very "real", and not like my usual "goofy" dreams. Also, most of us have "had a feeling" of how some event will turn out, or have thoughts about someone just before hearing from them, or getting news about them.
As examples, see the case of the child who remembered being a pilot in the Pacific during World War 2 who remembers the circumstances around his death, and the people he worked with, and even attended the reunion of his flight group; the near-death experience of Dr. Eben Alexander, a neurologist; and the work of evidential medium Suzanne Giesemann, a retired Navy commander. To me, the evidence provided by these facts prove, to my satisfaction, that we existed before our present lives, and that our existence continues beyond these lives. Religions can be helpful in some ways, to some people, but certainly do not provide a satisfactory explanation to our questions.

I wish we could get rid of terms like "die" and "death". There are alarming and misleading. People don't die, they just stop living, and there's a critical difference in meaning and impact. Same with death. Nobody is in a state called "death", it doesn't exist.
People just live for a finite time, and then stop living.
When a vacation ends, you don't consider yourself in a state of "vacation ended", it's just over.

    Is there Life after death?
When God created the human race. He had a big vision in mind. He placed of Himself within each of us -- something called our soul. And since God will always exist, so will we. Our bodies will expire, but our soul continues on forever.
We wonder about the life after death because of what God placed inside of us and because our soul is greater than this finite world. Some people try to ignore God's plan, but it's still there. The Bible sums up what God did and our limited view of it. "He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end." (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
Our belief in the afterlife, doesn't have to be based on a wish. Instead, the proof you're looking for is found in Jesus Christ. After Jesus Christ died on the cross He was buried and sealed inside a guarded tomb. Jesus' body remained there for three days. Then after the third day, Jesus Christ arose from the dead. Jesus came back to life, hundreds of people saw Him alive, and He demonstrated there really is life after death.
Not only that, Jesus told us what we would be doing after His death. When Jesus was unfairly sentenced to death, two others were sentenced with Him. (The two thieves) As they were hung on the cross, one of the thieves said, "Jesus, remember me when You enter into Your kingdom." (Luke 23:42)
Jesus answered him, "Today, thou shalt be with Me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43). Jesus died that day but we know He went to Paradise afterward.
You have a soul and it doesn't end with the death of your body. The resurrection of Jesus Christ not only provided evidence of the afterlife but also offered the opportunity to be with Him in Heaven for all eternity.
John 11:25,26 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.
And whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?

In it he dives into the philosopher Tom Clark's essay "Death, Nothingness and Subjectivity". I implore you to search "Sam Harris Generic Subjective Continuity". He still doesn't believe in anything supernatural, and GSC is completely naturalistic, but he has made progress in adopting this conclusion of what will happen after death _if_ there are infact no supernatural afterlives or souls, and we truly will cease to exist at death.

Here's an idea: the best afterlife, at least from the perspective of this life, and the perspective of this life must rule supreme, because it is all that is, the best afterlife is that which does not matter, because if it matters, then this life does not matter. The quantity of relevance that you place on the afterlife, you take from this life. Would you like to consider this life unimportant? Maybe, it is your business. But should i? If yes, then it would no longer be my business, and if it would not be my business, then yours should not be your business, meaning you should not have the beliefs you have. You could just Google "Sam Harris", but does it matter how educated he is? He's very well known. You don't need anything to not believe in religion. When I was about 13, I thought Bible stories were hard to believe. So I decided since I was so young, it was okay for me to doubt. I remember thinking as I got older and I would just change my mind. What I had done was the opposite of Faith. Armed with my new freedom to Doubt, though I didn't realize it, I would never be able to believe any religion... not Hinduism, Islam, Christianity... In ths same way I never believed in Superman no matter what the books said, I never believed that any holy book. It wasn't about Evolution, wanting to sin or Atheism, if my dating is right it was 1958 and I was 13. I had never heard the word 'atheist' or Evolution. I was like a Kid from Mars landing on Earth and took Holy Books for what they were, old story books. I didn't give one more credence than another. I didn't worship stories in old books written by people I don't know and can never know. I'm 78 now, I've been close to death a couple of times, I was not afraid, I don't worry and have never worried about sin. I treat people like I would like to be treated. Married my high school sweetheart in 1964. It doesn't take education, it takes the desire to believe things only if there is clear evidence that they are true.

@@bobusa1960 You say that as if it is a real scientific field of study lol. How many religions are there in the world and all of them claim to have the perfect word from the creator of the universe. Not to mention they all contradict themselves (I read the bible and even the quaran). The bible even contradicts itself. I assume you are christian and you think that all the muslim and hindu theologians are wrong and yours are right. Theology doesn't contribute anything to society and does not evolve unlike physics, medicine, chemistry and all the other fields. Those fields have new discoveries all the time and our understanding of the cosmos evolves with them. Just look at physics from 200 years ago and now and then look at theology from 200 years ago and now. All the holy books in the world were written by bronze age peasants who didn't even know the earth orbited the sun or that disease are spread by germs. They knew nothing about the universe and somehow you and many others are claiming they got everything right and they know for 100% that the universe was created by a god that even listens to prayers and cares about sin. In the far future if humanity survives all of these religions will be taught at mythology class. Each religion is an tight societal meme unto itself and resilient to external change. All these Mental giants failed Epistemology 101 and cannot resist discussing the *U N K N O W A B L E !* as if they know...sigh

Knowledge is different than wisdom, and knowledge does you no good without wisdom. Wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit.

By this "logic" lots of people on Earth have no "holy spirit" / "soul". 😂

Because the Buybull tells you so? Broaden your horizons and read outside the Buybull. Study how the Buybull was compiled for one thing. Then consider how many denominations and sects there are just because your holy (book full of holes) is interpreted in so many different ways. This very fact is the reason for so much divisiveness and religious wars. One would think the all-powerful god could have inspired a book that could only be interpreted in one way. Anyone who denies the contradictions and out and out atrocities god permitted/ordered is suffering from cognitive dissonance or terminal indoctrination.

To dismiss religion as a set of dogmas meant to provide a coping solution for the problem of death is one thing and to dismiss consciousness as an emergent property of information processing is a completely different thing. We know something about religion, we invented it, but we know nothing about consciousness. I refuse to accept the fact that Sam Harris, as a very bright man, is unaware of this distinction (and other inaccuracies), rather he intentionally builds his argument in a way that might convey his point to a dumber audience which is fine, I guess, as long as the message gets across.

Can you present an example of a consciousness that is not a product of a physical brain and that exists outside of a physical brain?
