I read Michelle McNamara's book the week they caught him. When I started the book he had not been caught. When I finished, they had just arrested him. It was amazing timing. The book is a great read.

*NOTES: He wasn't fired from his police job, he resigned so the police force wouldn't do a deeper investigation. The hammer & dog repellent was going to be/was used to get past yards with big dogs. DeAngelo is seen as one of the people in a photo of one of the Town Hall Meetings. He also has degrees in forensics & detective work, which aided him side-stepping getting caught. After the first case to convict someone using DNA evidence in the US was won in the 80's, DeAngelo got scared and stopped committing crimes, as mostly everyone in the world had not known that DNA was even a thing or existed at this time of human society.
Thank fucking Christ that most modern police forces are now starting and maintaining databases of DNA for everybody they process. Allowing investigations to be concluded much more quickly when they find corresponding matches. Honestly the stuff this depraved bastard did sends shivers down my spine and he managed to do it with complete immunity in multiple areas and towns for decades. There’s still hope they might one day have closure on other big cases such as the zodiac killer in the near future as well.
This monster lived .5 miles from my sister and her family for almost a decade. He made his final home, outside of prison, within a mile of two schools and several family parks, all within the vicinity of his most brutal crimes. There's no telling how many people he continued to stalk and what petty crimes he obsessed upon while no longer physically able to commit the crimes congruent with his M.O., or whether he watched woman such as my sister walking their children to and from school knowing most individuals would pass him by, taking him for a harmless grandfather. My family and I drove as well as walked past him home countless times before his arrest. We were none the wiser until the day my sister's quiet neighborhood was disturbed by the sounds of circling helicopters overhead, only to discover their purpose once we watched the local news moments later. The reason I share these facts that have deeply impacted my family's sense of security, is to remind everyone taking the time, and with the maturity to comprehend, this real-life brush with evil of one thing: we never have any way of knowing how close we are everyday to the horrors that we see on television or read in books and other media. My sister and I spent our lives researching serial killers and the reasons how/why the manifest into these things; we never could have imagined one was lurking so close to home. These monsters that we make larger than life in our minds, they look like everyone else. They don't look like Freddy Kruger and Leatherface. They don't all hide out in the woods and under bridges. They sometimes spend thirty years living in the middle of a family suburb, terrorizing their own family while everyone else thinks they're harmless.. Never take your saftey and the saftey of your family for granted. Never assume you will know danger the moment it presents itself; true monsters learn to blend in. Hold your family close and thank whomever it is you pray to, as well as the numerous individuals who worked relentlessly for decades to solve these horrendous crimes, that one fewer of these beasts is freely roaming the Earth. I was in Seattle (serial K world capital) during the Green River Killer's reign- they were finding women's bodies in the bushes twice a week and it wasn't even news!! At that rate, I thought maybe I'd get affected within 5 years, 2 1/2 years later a retarded ax-murderer broke into a friends daughter in laws mothers home and chopped her up- destroyed the family, cowered in the home afraid of even opening a window at 100F, daughter ended up committing suicide.

According to his entry on Wikipedia, they were divorced in 2019; whether that was before, or after, he admitted to his crimes, I’m not sure. Perhaps she waited until he confessed, so she wouldn’t have to be called in to testify, because she knew something, as you speculated; or maybe she didn’t know anything, and set the wheels in motion to divorce him, back in 2018, when he was arrested. It’s interesting that she never divorced him before, despite being separated for many years: I know that isn’t unheard of, and it sometimes happens with married couples; but when it turns out that one of them is actually a serial killer, and a serial rapist, it makes you wonder all sorts of messed up things, you would never consider. Though, at the time of his arrest, he was living in a home with his daughter, and granddaughter; so you’d like to think that, if his wife knew something about his crimes, or even if she only suspected him of something, she would have fought tooth and nail, to stop her daughter and granddaughter living with him. Either by threatening him, that she’d go to the police, or tell her daughter the truth about him. Or that she’d have just told her daughter something in secret: even she didn’t tell her everything she knew/thought she knew about him, in order to dissuade her from allowing her father to live with her, and her child. At least you’d hope she would have done something along those lines, if she had any idea about him: even if she was scared of him, or he’d threatened her life, if she said anything, you still wouldn’t allow your daughter, and granddaughter, to live with a man who you either knew, or you suspected, was a serial killer/serial rapist. So, who knows what she knew, and when she knew it; it’s probably something we’ll never find out, unless either him, or his now ex-wife, comes forward with new information, which seems unlikely. At least that particular monster is finally behind bars; even though, with his advanced age, life in prison won’t feel enough like life; but at least his victims have gained some measure of justice, and the survivors know he won’t be calling them anymore, and threatening to return for another visit. An old family friend looked a lot like the police sketches at the time. He tells a good story of being treated very suspiciously by a waitress, then rushed by cops as he left the restaurant. It all got cleared up.

And he ping ponged through three departments, probably so his coworkers wouldn't figure him out. Dude was Angry, that doesn't disappear just because you go to work. I was in elementary school in Elk Grove CA, 15 miles south of Sacramento when the East Area Rapist first started his crimes. The media also called him the East Side Rapist. He was arrested less than a half mile from my wife's house in 2018 in Citrus Heights, a suburb north east of Sacramento.
It's still hard to believe that he lived so close to me (I used to live in Citrus Heights up until last year). I even saw and met the man a few times over the years. Particularly at the elementary school I went to (his granddaughter went there) as well as at the local grocery store. He always seemed like an eccentric person, sometimes grumpy and angry, but I don't I would have ever expected that he of all people would have been a killer. It really gets me paranoid knowing that a monster lived so close to me and I never suspected a thing.
A few times, yeah. I neglected to mention that he also went to a local Hobby Lobby, which I saw him at on occasion. That's where I talked to him. I don't know why he himself went there, but I always went for paints.

It is amazing how much trouble one human being can cause. He stopped in 1986, but not before stirring enough trouble where he could read about his victims for years. If it was not for the people who made it a life goal to solve this case, all of his victims that lived would never get closure. As for "he showed no remorse", people this violent never will show remorse, we as a society should stop expecting that.
I live in Sacramento, and the same day he was arrested I was actually in a fairly bad car accident. Being pretty interested in the case, and finding out, I ran to the jail courthouse where he was appearing. You guys have absolutely no idea how big of a deal this is out here. I'm dead serious, the media coverage every time he's in court is like that of OJ Simpson.

I was stationed at Mather AFB in Rancho Cordova at the time (1974-1978)that he was identified as the East Area Rapist (EAR). He struck many homes in the surrounding area during my tour at Mather. I was married and flew B-52's. At least once a month, sometimes two all crew-members would have to sit on Nuclear Alert for a week at a time, this meant that myself and the rest of the members of the flight crews of the Alert B-52's and the Alert Tankers (KC-135's) and the planes maintenance personnel slept in the Alert Facility on base by our planes in case we were needed to protect our Nation against the Russians(think the Cold War). During these times our wives stayed in our off-base homes during these alert tours. All of our wives were absolutely terrified at what was going on. It seemed at the time that hardy a week or two would pass without reading of his acts of terror. I remember all the times that my my wife called me at the alert facility scared out of her mind at 2 or 3 am because she heard something outside, perhaps the wind blowing a branch against the fence, or a dog or cat hissing or growling in the night, maybe just the house settling. The husbands were all stuck there at the alert facility worried sick about them. During that time I remember how scarce guns and deadbolts anywhere in the area. You spent hours screwing Sliding Glass Doors and Windows shut when you weren't flying or on alert. That POS is responsible for destroying so many lives, not just the folks that he actually raped, tortured and killed, but also thousands upon thousands of folks he didn't visit, except in their thoughts and dreams everyday and night. You would try to push it to the back of your mind and try to go on and lead a somewhat normal life but when the sun went down he was on everyone's mind. He was the worst kind of terrorist that you could imagine. For that four year period you just didn't know if your house was next. It was akin to living out the scariest horror movie you ever saw, except you may have the next starring role, The stakes were altogether too real. I know of many many people that would like to have some time alone with him now and I know that will never happen and unfortunately the State will be far to lenient in their penalty, if it isn't excruciating painful for him, it will never be the correct punishment. I truly appreciate all of the Law Enforcement, the years they spent and their tenacious attitude that helped bring this to an end. God Bless You All.

Nothing you do to the man will bring any of those people back, his death, no matter how cruel and satisfying YOU think it might be won't erase decades of trauma and misery,. You might need to take a deep look inward, you, a person who is not even counted among the victims calls for the death and torture of another you supposedly condemn for THEIR cruelty. He's caught, he's in his 70s and will more than likely die before this even goes to trial. He can't hurt anyone else on the outside, and nothing is gained from stooping to his murderous level.

it's so weird to hear these stories about someone doing something crazy for homework, usually as "punishment". In my class, there were people who didn't care about studying much and they would just not do any homework, let alone something crazy like that. The teachers thought they would punish well by giving an unreasonable amount of homework, only to find that nobody actually did it. And it was just that. What's the worst that can happen? Some people are just drunken on power, they need to be lowered down a notch.

This guy tried to snatch me when I was a kid in Dana Point harbor. This was the day right before he killed that couple near the harbor. I was fortunate because I wouldn't let myself get close to him. I'll never forget his face. My mom called the police and made a report. God was looking after me on that day.

i honestly never thought they would catch this guy. definitely a case of "better late than never". with modern forensic technology they're closing more cold cases now than ever. amazing.

DeAngelo is seen as one of the people in a photo of one of the Town Hall Meetings.
He also has degrees in forensics & detective work, which aided him side-stepping getting caught.
After the first case to convict someone using DNA evidence in the US was won in the 80's, DeAngelo got scared and stopped committing crimes, as mostly everyone in the world had not known that DNA was even a thing or existed at this time of human society.
Thank fucking Christ that most modern police forces are now starting and maintaining databases of DNA for everybody they process. Allowing investigations to be concluded much more quickly when they find corresponding matches. Honestly the stuff this depraved bastard did sends shivers down my spine and he managed to do it with complete immunity in multiple areas and towns for decades. There’s still hope they might one day have closure on other big cases such as the zodiac killer in the near future as well.

This monster lived .5 miles from my sister and her family for almost a decade. He made his final home, outside of prison, within a mile of two schools and several family parks, all within the vicinity of his most brutal crimes. There's no telling how many people he continued to stalk and what petty crimes he obsessed upon while no longer physically able to commit the crimes congruent with his M.O., or whether he watched woman such as my sister walking their children to and from school knowing most individuals would pass him by, taking him for a harmless grandfather. My family and I drove as well as walked past him home countless times before his arrest. We were none the wiser until the day my sister's quiet neighborhood was disturbed by the sounds of circling helicopters overhead, only to discover their purpose once we watched the local news moments later. The reason I share these facts that have deeply impacted my family's sense of security, is to remind everyone taking the time, and with the maturity to comprehend, this real-life brush with evil of one thing: we never have any way of knowing how close we are everyday to the horrors that we see on television or read in books and other media. My sister and I spent our lives researching serial killers and the reasons how/why the manifest into these things; we never could have imagined one was lurking so close to home. These monsters that we make larger than life in our minds, they look like everyone else. They don't look like Freddy Kruger and Leatherface. They don't all hide out in the woods and under bridges. They sometimes spend thirty years living in the middle of a family suburb, terrorizing their own family while everyone else thinks they're harmless.. Never take your saftey and the saftey of your family for granted. Never assume you will know danger the moment it presents itself; true monsters learn to blend in. Hold your family close and thank whomever it is you pray to, as well as the numerous individuals who worked relentlessly for decades to solve these horrendous crimes, that one fewer of these beasts is freely roaming the Earth.

I was in Seattle (serial K world capital) during the Green River Killer's reign- they were finding women's bodies in the bushes twice a week and it wasn't even news!! At that rate, I thought maybe I'd get affected within 5 years, 2 1/2 years later a retarded ax-murderer broke into a friends daughter in laws mothers home and chopped her up- destroyed the family, cowered in the home afraid of even opening a window at 100F, daughter ended up committing suicide.
I go the park the lived right by occasionally and I was less than a mile away from his house laying in bed with my ex talking about the GSK crimes because we had a creep who had kept coming up to the door in the night. Gives me shivers thinking about it

According to his entry on Wikipedia, they were divorced in 2019; whether that was before, or after, he admitted to his crimes, I’m not sure.
Perhaps she waited until he confessed, so she wouldn’t have to be called in to testify, because she knew something, as you speculated; or maybe she didn’t know anything, and set the wheels in motion to divorce him, back in 2018, when he was arrested.
It’s interesting that she never divorced him before, despite being separated for many years: I know that isn’t unheard of, and it sometimes happens with married couples; but when it turns out that one of them is actually a serial killer, and a serial rapist, it makes you wonder all sorts of messed up things, you would never consider.
Though, at the time of his arrest, he was living in a home with his daughter, and granddaughter; so you’d like to think that, if his wife knew something about his crimes, or even if she only suspected him of something, she would have fought tooth and nail, to stop her daughter and granddaughter living with him.
Either by threatening him, that she’d go to the police, or tell her daughter the truth about him.
Or that she’d have just told her daughter something in secret: even she didn’t tell her everything she knew/thought she knew about him, in order to dissuade her from allowing her father to live with her, and her child.
At least you’d hope she would have done something along those lines, if she had any idea about him: even if she was scared of him, or he’d threatened her life, if she said anything, you still wouldn’t allow your daughter, and granddaughter, to live with a man who you either knew, or you suspected, was a serial killer/serial rapist.
So, who knows what she knew, and when she knew it; it’s probably something we’ll never find out, unless either him, or his now ex-wife, comes forward with new information, which seems unlikely.
At least that particular monster is finally behind bars; even though, with his advanced age, life in prison won’t feel enough like life; but at least his victims have gained some measure of justice, and the survivors know he won’t be calling them anymore, and threatening to return for another visit.

An old family friend looked a lot like the police sketches at the time. He tells a good story of being treated very suspiciously by a waitress, then rushed by cops as he left the restaurant. It all got cleared up.

I was in elementary school in Elk Grove CA, 15 miles south of Sacramento when the East Area Rapist first started his crimes. The media also called him the East Side Rapist. He was arrested less than a half mile from my wife's house in 2018 in Citrus Heights, a suburb north east of Sacramento.
It's still hard to believe that he lived so close to me (I used to live in Citrus Heights up until last year). I even saw and met the man a few times over the years. Particularly at the elementary school I went to (his granddaughter went there) as well as at the local grocery store. He always seemed like an eccentric person, sometimes grumpy and angry, but I don't I would have ever expected that he of all people would have been a killer. It really gets me paranoid knowing that a monster lived so close to me and I never suspected a thing.

It is amazing how much trouble one human being can cause. He stopped in 1986, but not before stirring enough trouble where he could read about his victims for years. If it was not for the people who made it a life goal to solve this case, all of his victims that lived would never get closure. As for "he showed no remorse", people this violent never will show remorse, we as a society should stop expecting that.
I live in Sacramento, and the same day he was arrested I was actually in a fairly bad car accident. Being pretty interested in the case, and finding out, I ran to the jail courthouse where he was appearing. You guys have absolutely no idea how big of a deal this is out here. I'm dead serious, the media coverage every time he's in court is like that of OJ Simpson.

I was stationed at Mather AFB in Rancho Cordova at the time (1974-1978)that he was identified as the East Area Rapist (EAR). He struck many homes in the surrounding area during my tour at Mather. I was married and flew B-52's. At least once a month, sometimes two all crew-members would have to sit on Nuclear Alert for a week at a time, this meant that myself and the rest of the members of the flight crews of the Alert B-52's and the Alert Tankers (KC-135's) and the planes maintenance personnel slept in the Alert Facility on base by our planes in case we were needed to protect our Nation against the Russians(think the Cold War). During these times our wives stayed in our off-base homes during these alert tours. All of our wives were absolutely terrified at what was going on. It seemed at the time that hardy a week or two would pass without reading of his acts of terror. I remember all the times that my my wife called me at the alert facility scared out of her mind at 2 or 3 am because she heard something outside, perhaps the wind blowing a branch against the fence, or a dog or cat hissing or growling in the night, maybe just the house settling. The husbands were all stuck there at the alert facility worried sick about them. During that time I remember how scarce guns and deadbolts anywhere in the area. You spent hours screwing Sliding Glass Doors and Windows shut when you weren't flying or on alert. That POS is responsible for destroying so many lives, not just the folks that he actually raped, tortured and killed, but also thousands upon thousands of folks he didn't visit, except in their thoughts and dreams everyday and night. You would try to push it to the back of your mind and try to go on and lead a somewhat normal life but when the sun went down he was on everyone's mind. He was the worst kind of terrorist that you could imagine. For that four year period you just didn't know if your house was next. It was akin to living out the scariest horror movie you ever saw, except you may have the next starring role, The stakes were altogether too real. I know of many many people that would like to have some time alone with him now and I know that will never happen and unfortunately the State will be far to lenient in their penalty, if it isn't excruciating painful for him, it will never be the correct punishment. I truly appreciate all of the Law Enforcement, the years they spent and their tenacious attitude that helped bring this to an end. God Bless You All.

Nothing you do to the man will bring any of those people back, his death, no matter how cruel and satisfying YOU think it might be won't erase decades of trauma and misery,. You might need to take a deep look inward, you, a person who is not even counted among the victims calls for the death and torture of another you supposedly condemn for THEIR cruelty.
He's caught, he's in his 70s and will more than likely die before this even goes to trial. He can't hurt anyone else on the outside, and nothing is gained from stooping to his murderous level.
@@largol33t1 California no longer has capital punishment. So the whole question whether he should get it or not is a moot point. Although he certainly deserves it if it was still an option.
@@diablerietandino1941 Capital punishment in the United States doesn't involve torture. The Bill of Rights expressly forbids " cruel and unusual punishment". So, I'm not sure where you are getting that from.
Additionally, California no longer has capital punishment. It's a moot point debating the issue. Although this guy certainly deserves it if anyone does.

it's so weird to hear these stories about someone doing something crazy for homework, usually as "punishment". In my class, there were people who didn't care about studying much and they would just not do any homework, let alone something crazy like that. The teachers thought they would punish well by giving an unreasonable amount of homework, only to find that nobody actually did it. And it was just that. What's the worst that can happen? Some people are just drunken on power, they need to be lowered down a notch.
When my mother was young her family home was robbed by the Visalia ransacker it's pretty scary to know all these years later. They had a serial killer in their house luckily nobody was home at the time

There was no Air Force in WW2, think it was called Army Air Corps and couple years after WW2 they renamed it to Air Force.......it’s trivial, I know.
During WWII it was known as the US Army Air Force and under Army command, the US Air Force didn't become it's own separate branch of the US military until after the end of WWII. Army Air Corps(FKA Army Air Service)was used after WWI right up to the beginning of WWII.

I remember this freak. I can remember being around 8 or 9 years old. I can even remember seeing a sketch of him in the Sacramento Union (a newspaper, that has been for many years, defunct from bankruptcy).
This guy tried to snatch me when I was a kid in Dana Point harbor. This was the day right before he killed that couple near the harbor. I was fortunate because I wouldn't let myself get close to him. I'll never forget his face. My mom called the police and made a report. God was looking after me on that day.
