I like the comment about when you see wildlife enjoying the area that will be the win. It shows what habitat management is about. It also shows as hunters we are far more complex than the image being portrayed by the anti-hunting groups. It really is about just being part of nature, and when we get to feed our families as a result that it is only a small part of the whole experience.
I have watched this series mostly on my other account on the iPad because I wanted to see it all on a bigger screen. Even though my daughter and I couldnt afford to take care of this property we will live vicariously through who does. Y'all are made of magic. Just explain how a five year old would watch my favorite dudes do what we all love and never complain. Thanks for everything. These videos mean a ton to the small guys out here. Thanks again.
Well done! I’m a public land black tail hunter in Southern California... or in other words, I like to do a lot of hiking with a rifle slung over my shoulder... trying to avoid private property and hoping to bump into a forkey. So the thought of working some land like this is amazing. Great series! Can’t wait for the next episode.
I definitely feel that long-term habitat is the way to go, but there are absolutely middle grounds to take to get some good immediate feedback in prey.
Great series! Living in Michigan I love to see someone taking a regular piece of land and turning it into something special right here in my state. And then chronically it all in a quality done series! Great job!
I'm an environmental science student and I'm really really looking forward to what these guys are doing with this place. I want to learn a lot more about land management
As a guy born and raised in the west who’s only hunted wild public land this is so foreign haha. Seems more like farming and harvesting than hunting. I’ve never understood the appeal of this but it’s interesting to watch haha.
I have used one of those pull behind “hogs” and you really should use the offset tongue feature. That keeps you from running over what you haven’t mowed. It really makes a difference!
Thanks for the series guys it means so much to me! I do love western hunts, but living in Northeastern Lower Michigan it's a dream. This, I can definitely turn into reality. I love every minute!
Man o man I hope you guys burn those fields! Fire does incredible things. I burned on my own "back 40", more like 3 but we saw quail, painted buntings, and turkeys come back. Seeing the fire adapted plants come back afterward is miraculous! We burnt a cabbage palm to a crisp, I mean 60 foot flames coming off the top, and that thing sprouted bright green palm frond a week later. Fire adapted habitats are downright magic!
im a massive fan of you, Mark, and all of your friends on the podcast! ive always loved hunting and now it has become my biggest passion... a million times over.. thank you!
I like the electric fence around beans idea for the late season on a piece of this. Leave half unfenced give them a taste, week before gun season remove the juice.
I was originally into the idea of giving away the land at the end of the season, but now I want you to keep it so you can demonstrate long term land management strategies, season after season.
Love this concept I've been doin the same thing to my little 22 acres in southern Illinois for the wildlife and my livestock growing plants and grass to that naturally pollenate and seed itself and replenish itself every year with very little effort is the best thing I could of done
Honestly, you guys should work on establishing the management and habitat for two years. Continue to video and document. Also, don't give it away to some individual. Form a nonprofit and use it to introduce others (underprivileged kids, those with a terminal illness, etc.) to hunting and the outdoors.
That’s an awesome mower! I’m going through the same debate with some ground in Iowa. Do I cut brush and try to restore the prairie species, or should I set up for deer? My big enemy is wild parsnip. That stuff is all over the property
Good episode but I would have like to see more detail in it. Such as where and why you set up your blind and what type of plant you are putting in your food plots. Hunting gear and methods. Also why does burning matter vs cutting matter
The farmer in me is dying watching Mark try to get the equipment going.
A little bit of me dies every time I watch it too. Haha!
me too! Maybe they need a couple more "consultants"
I bet the gas was turned off. Done that a hundred times. Great video. 👍🏻
Lol, I watched him turn it, it's all because he didn't have his PPE on, his gloves on lol
Nothing better than stomping around the woods with some good buddies enjoying the great outdoors!

I keep telling everyone about this series. It’s so awesome.

I'm an environmental science student and I'm really really looking forward to what these guys are doing with this place. I want to learn a lot more about land management
_prizrak nilbog_ studying the enviroment. I think lol
Me too! I'm digging the holistic ecological health approach to land management.

Mark, I wish you were my neighbor. I’d love to help a young guy like yourself out with all your equipment troubles!
Keep at it, this is how we learn.

Those mowers start a lot easier when you turn the fuel on...
Or turn the key on.
Or just put the lead on the spark plug
Thanks for the series guys it means so much to me! I do love western hunts, but living in Northeastern Lower Michigan it's a dream. This, I can definitely turn into reality. I love every minute!
What an awesome opportunity to build a place/space to serve the purpose of enjoying your passions.
It's been 18 days. Ready for the next episode, please.
Super awesome getting to see you all fix up and manage that property just to turn around and give it to me! Loving the series so far.

Definitely love seeing this property grow. Good having the Meat Eater crew close to home again.
You guys are living the dream! Congratulations on all your hard work coming to fruition!
I love this series. Learning about the habitat and management aspect of the property. Keep up the great work
I like the electric fence around beans idea for the late season on a piece of this. Leave half unfenced give them a taste, week before gun season remove the juice.
This is a great concept! Looking forward to the next instalment!
This is my dream right here, love watching what you are doing for both hunting and conservation! Keep it up.
I was originally into the idea of giving away the land at the end of the season, but now I want you to keep it so you can demonstrate long term land management strategies, season after season.
Same. It is a big deal giving away 40 acres. That's a big ass prize value. I say keep it and show us what it can do...
Just a dream series! Love the idea and looking forward to the finished product!
I wish Mark would do more on public land bow hunting in Michigan. Maybe next season.
This is a beautiful thing. Actual concervation not just talking about it. Keep it up
This is my absolute dream to have, look after and share a spot like this. 😍
The background music when he was trying to start the bush hog made it all the more hilarious 😂😂
I recently found your show on Netflix and I just want to take the time to say that I freaking love it!!!!! Amazing work!!!🦌🦌
Love this concept I've been doin the same thing to my little 22 acres in southern Illinois for the wildlife and my livestock growing plants and grass to that naturally pollenate and seed itself and replenish itself every year with very little effort is the best thing I could of done
So far so good. Cant wait to see the land and the progression of all the hard work you guys put in!
My favorite MeatEater you tube series.
Great series! Loving the land so far
Loving following this Back 40 series. Very cool stuff, and super practical. Cheers!
Awesome! I was just wondering when we'd get the next episode.
Watching Mark struggle with anything mechanical reminds me that man has entered a regressive phase.
I was waiting for that pull start to break
More great stuff! Thanks for putting it out there for us to enjoy.
A good chainsaw and power pole saw will be invaluable for clearing trails and shooting lanes.
Finally episode 2! thanks guys
Appreciate it guys! Keep up the good work.
Great idea with story line. I will learn a lot from your video. Also be entertained in the process.
Such a great idea for a series!
Learning a lot with you guys. Thanks!
Fire doesn't require as many parts. Burn a few spots and plant a plot or two later.
Honestly, you guys should work on establishing the management and habitat for two years. Continue to video and document. Also, don't give it away to some individual. Andy Musgrove fuck underprivileged kids give it to someone who will truly appreciate it! A hunter!
This show is top notch guys! 👌🏼👍🙏
Mark, really enjoy the format of this series! Also a Michigan boy, from northern Oakland county.
I live in Southeast Michigan and love watching the show. If y'all ever need a hand out there let me know!
That plant expert must be really knowledgable because I had no clue what he was even taking about other than "burn it!"
Love this series. Looking forward to the next video
Back40 is awesome. Im an estate manager for an estate of similair size and it sure is a lot of work. Saw a buck yesterday! And see tons of squirrels.
Loving this series!
Looking forward to Episode 3
Awesome series guys, I can't wait to win the farm! You are all invited to hunt with me.
That one guy with the mustache and glasses looks exactly like my uncle Gabe. Like seriously his twin
I'll trade you my motor skills for your ability to figure out away to hunt everyday haha
Keep em coming.
Great episode
Such a cool project!!!
Great series...I’m working through a similar process in different habitat...hoping to learn some stuff.
OMG did he put oil in it first!!!!!!!!!!

I live in Michigan. Hoping to win the farm!
I live in the same township; that would be even more convenient.
Great series keep up the good work
Love MeatEater content
That’s was me at one point with this old piece of crap mower I had haha @ 11:20
Can't mash that subscribe button any harder without breaking my phone. Pumped up to see some thinking man's chicken in the next one.

Keepem coming
I thought Mark was gonna blow a rotator cuff
Brother it wasn't your fault it was the gloves. You've gotta watch them, they can be pretty sneaky at times! 👀🔍👓😎
Awesome! That’s so cool!
Man, I'm jealous I don't get to do that stuff anymore. I'm ashamed that I haven't been able to pass things on to kids like this.
Love the new show!
These need to be an hour long. : )
Dan Whiting, your chief back 40 engineer. Call me.
Good stuff!
To own 64 acres here in Indiana for hunting... I could die a happy man.
New engine should start on first pull. Is the gas shut off ?
Choke it? That’s so crazy it just might work.
Awesome video
I want out of LA so bad... This is my dream have some elbow room to develop my own land.
