Dan's Law is especially in place here because they de-aged Kyle Chandler for the opening scene (I think just with makeup and hair colouring). Obviously, he's gonna be back later because he looks 15 years older in real life.
Well you should see who's behind the camera. Jaume Collett Serra who directed Carry On, may not be the best action director ever but in terms of making a well made entertaining mid budget action movies, he's certainly one of the better ones
I remember discovering Dan's Law when I was sick for a while and watched one of those Law & Order (or whatever, one of those shows) marathons on USA. They'd investigate like four people, and I'd recognize the third actor and the other three were just random bit actors or something... I knew who the bad guy was. I love how "streaming content" has become the "straight to video" of this generation.
Dan's law applies to TV as well. We were watching A Brilliant Mind and suddenly Mandy Patinkin is in a seemingly tiny role as a random person at an apartment building. My wife and I both said, well he's going to turn out to be someone important...😂
Dear Dan, the fact that you don't have 2 mln subscribers yet is a mystery to me! You're a STAR & one of my fav movie critics since Screen Junkies days 😍😍😍😍😍
Who's Cameron Diaz's dad in Back Back In Action? Who do we get to be opposite Glenn Close? John Malkovich (a wink and a nod to Dangerous Liaisons), Jack Nicholson (a wink and a nod to Mars Attacks), Pierce Brosnan (a wink and a nod to 90s Bond films), Harrison Ford (a wink and a nod to Air Force One)? Whoever it is, you know it's going to be a wink and a nod do some well-known nostalgic 90s film.
It always amused me that Dan was willing enough to give a freaking spoiler review to an average forgettable Netflix movie that I won't watch in a million years but here we are 😅
Dan thought this might be a sequel to the 2014 'Annie'. I thought it was a remake of 'Looney Tunes: Back in Action', but without the Looney Tunes this time somehow.
I thought it was a remake of the 1994 DTV cult classic Back In Action, with Jamie Foxx in the Billy Blanks role and Cameron Diaz in the Rowdy Roddy Piper role 😅
Honestly, the thing that reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaally pissed me off regarding this movie, is the fact that Belarusians speak Polish here (well, at least they try speaking Polish). Yup, I'm Polish, so it was hard to miss for me. Given the current history and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, happening RIGHT OUTSIDE THE BORDERS OF MY COUNTRY, and Belarusian input in all this...I'm more than angry, that my language is being assigned to Belarusian thugs. It was obviously done by someone who thought to themselves: "Oh well, no one will notice anyway." or "Oh well, there is not that much of a difference anyway between these languages." I'm livid...and I want blood :(
Corollary to Dan's law: in a movie where the leads are movies stars, if the only villain you have seen so far is not a famous actor then they are not the real villain.
We have a homebrew version of 'Dan's Law' for watching media lately (pointing out weirdly cast big name actors, or Chekov's *fill in the blank with big obvious weapon or plot device*), very happy to have a term to use now!
I actually fell asleep watching this. No real story or logical dialogue and every 20 mins they break out into fight sequences. Really top notch stars in this and it does not rise up to their level.
It’s very obviously going to be called “Back in Action Too” (in the style of the “Look Who’s Talking” films) to signify both a second film and that the grandfather is now also ‘back in action’. They could even have “Back in Action Now” for when their children become full fledged spies or perhaps marry someone who is, by default, drawn into the ‘action’.
Now I just need a name for my noticed phenomena of old sequels to franchises that were considered bad when they came out at the time but after new, worse instalments look better. My main example of this is the Jurassic Park & Jurassic World movies.
The most prominent example of Dan’s law that comes to mind is “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (American version). Watched that for the first time within the past year, and that one angered me since the entire movie revolves around that “who done it” mystery.
Another actor to add to Dan's Law is Jai Courtney. It doesn't matter if he starts off playing the good guy and gets killed early, he'll always come back later as the villain. When I see him in a trailer without any context, I already know he's the bad guy.
I am glad that Dan formalized "Dan's Law". I am old enough that a similar thing had occurred to me. If you watched enough "mystery" shows, it becomes relatively easy to guess that the well-known actor with a seemingly minor part is the "surprise bad guy" Ironically, this concept has become less useful to me since I no longer watch a lot of TV or top tier movies. That is to say that I no longer know when someone is a well-known actor, so I can be fooled more easily these days.
I'm putting my money down on the title being Back 2 Action, and Cameron Diaz's dad being Jim Carry in what can only be described as a terrible choice after The Mask.
However … it would be refreshing to see the male lead go from the love interest to parent for once (AKA: Sally Field opposite Tom Hanks in “Punchline” in 1988 and “Forrest Gump” in 1994)!
It‘s funny but I‘m only going back to Netflix for Anime these days. I have completely lost interest in their movies and TV shows, since they are just rehashing stuff you have seen a thousand times before.
People are a bit harsh on this movie. Is it a game changer? No. Is it a fun enough family friendly movie. Yes. It's a lot better than a lot of Netflix releases like hot frosty, bridgerton. The banter and chemistry is fun
My go-to example of Dan's Law both happening & not happening is the original Mission Impossible movie. Jon Voight appears to get killed early in the movie, but comes back later & turns out to be the villain. But in that same movie, Emilio Estevez is killed off in the 1st 10 min & is never heard from again. The guy was 1 of the biggest stars of the 80's & still starring in The Mighty Ducks movies at the time, so I was sure he wouldn't have such a tiny role & I thought he would come back at some point in the movie... But I guess that was the point, to keep the audience guessing throughout...
Just seeing their respective surnames was enough for me to MASH the Hard Pass button. This pair are dreadful “stars”, I’ve never enjoyed their performances in any movie they’ve been in, so this is a real return to form. Nice to see Demi and Pamala getting career revivals because they’re actually ACTING, but this pair are going nowhere, again, and deservedly so.
In my head canon, Cameron Diaz's mother sent her to boarding school in the US so her AMERICAN dad could keep an eye on her, thus making it possible to cast an american actor(please) as her dad, who just turns out to be...Mel Gibson! Crazy idea(not really), but it would make since for the world they created, seeing as how Glenn Close's character likes younger men.
@pattheplanter We're not not making something based on reality, and we're not asking deep questions. But if you wanna... Let's say we make Glenn and Mel the same-ish age and now she dates younger dudes because men her own age are less malleable to her liking? Sound better? It doesn't have to because it is my fan(I use that term lightly) fiction that I'm sharing FOR FUN AND LAUGHS. But thanks for your creative criticism and making me revise an obviously bad idea that could actually happen if this fun and silly trap of a movie gets enough view hours for a sequel lol
I’m a big fan of Dan’s Law. I do feel the need to point out an exception (that proves the rule?). That would be Executive Decision and Steve Seagal’s character, Lt. Colonel Austin Travis. I’m not sure why I bothered mentioning the name of the character, I’m sure we all remember it so well.
I really like your reviews Dan and i was hoping for one on StarWars Skeleton Crew show, but its probably too late now . I was wondering what where your thoughts about it (if you saw it that is)? I really liked it, for me its a bit like Goonies is space.
Diaz and Foxx have negative chemistry. They didn't kiss once and we're supposed to believe they're the perfect married couple trying to protect their family. But I think even consider that stuff is putting way more thinking to this than any of the people that made it. It's literally made to be played as background noise, it barely qualifies as art or cinema.
The fact that belarusian antyterrorists speak polish is so absurdic. I can't. If it wasn't enough they also mention they are russian and at the begging that they are from eastern Europe. They just couldn't pick one.
My obvious kind of choice for the dad in the sequel is Antonio Bandares. My much more entertaining guess would be wildly age inappropriate Zach Galifianakis.
Michael Douglas, of course.. Back in Action Fatal Attraction… alliteration always wins.. 😂 And the thing they look for…. A rabbit’s foot…ok, I’ll see myself out now.
Please review Better Man. We finally get an original movie that’s amazing and it’s going to bomb. Please use your platform. I always enjoy your opinions.
Love them both but nah...this wasn't it. There was no romantic chemistry between them. The best sequences were the action scenes and some of those were dicey. Dare I say, Cameron was better in action than Jaime (he seemed a little creaky).
Netflix is becoming the Hallmark (Christmas) of the retired spy genre.
Dan's Law is especially in place here because they de-aged Kyle Chandler for the opening scene (I think just with makeup and hair colouring). Obviously, he's gonna be back later because he looks 15 years older in real life.
I blame Carry-On for making us believe that Netflix can actually do above average action movies.
Well you should see who's behind the camera. Jaume Collett Serra who directed Carry On, may not be the best action director ever but in terms of making a well made entertaining mid budget action movies, he's certainly one of the better ones
And Rebel Ridge

No orphans is a deal breaker for me. 😢
An addendum to Dans Law.
This is twice as likely if it’s a British Actor.
Nailed the 'wink and nod' factor being part of the casting, regardless of who it is
8:51 No Dan, the law says it must be Back In Action 2 Electric Boogaloo.
The Thing = MacGuffin
Yes, I love Hitchcock and know what a MacGuffin is. The thing is a type of MacGuffin in spy movies.
@@DanMurrellMoviesNice!

(6:44) Dan’s Law is just Law & Order Logic. This rule has been established for a very long time. 😄
Sounds like the plot of Spy Kids. 😂
0:28 "Back in Action is directed and co-written by Seth Gordon; his last movie was Baywatch ughnnnnnnn"
Netflix original films are higher quality versions of Asylum movies, which is what people rented when the new films were all already taken.
I used Dan's Law on Detective Pikachu the moment I saw Bill Nighy
The movie term for "The Thing..." is a "Macguffin", a plot device, generally an object chased throughout the picture.
Honestly, the thing that reeeeeeeeeaaaaaaally pissed me off regarding this movie, is the fact that Belarusians speak Polish here (well, at least they try speaking Polish). Get Malkovich as the dad, and if it centers around older spies, call it "Bad Back in Action" 😎🤪
Followed by "Bad Back in Traction". With the R looking like a 3.
Corollary to Dan's law: in a movie where the leads are movies stars, if the only villain you have seen so far is not a famous actor then they are not the real villain.
Father: Clancy Brown
Dan be really trying to mine gold from this septic tank and 100% managing to do it

Ty Dan. Best reviews on the internet on ANY subject. This is fact

To be fair he was already well known but definitely not as much as his is now
Another actor to add to Dan's Law is Jai Courtney. It doesn't matter if he starts off playing the good guy and gets killed early, he'll always come back later as the villain. When I see him in a trailer without any context, I already know he's the bad guy.
1:32 McGuffin. You are talking about McGuffin
MacGuffin is a broader term. I feel like the thing is a subset of the MacGuffin that’s specific to spy movies.
No orphans? What about the children of the henchmen they kill?
As soon as Dan said that, I thought of an "implied orphan count" in the corner of the screen all the way through.
Fun fact: I don’t think they kill any henchmen. At least not directly
@ Well, I don't think I'll be fact-chacking you on that one - so I'll have to believe you. A-Team weapons physics?
@@DanMurrellMovies That's even worse 😂
I'm happy to see Jamie Foxx back in action (ha) but I saw a bit of this when my mom was watching it and eh I have a ton of other stuff to watch first
I am glad that Dan formalized "Dan's Law". I am old enough that a similar thing had occurred to me. Gotta get John Gleese to play the dad in the sequel or maybe Pierce Brosnan if they want to play up the retired spy angle.
I'm putting my money down on the title being Back 2 Action, and Cameron Diaz's dad being Jim Carry in what can only be described as a terrible choice after The Mask.

Jamie personally talked Cameron into coming out of retirement for this film
Before they wrote the script or after?
“Spoilers” 😂
I actually liked this for what it was lmfao and also that violent plane crash at the beginning really locked me in.
Dan's Law could be a subection of the statue of Roger Ebert's Law of Economy of Characters.
dan's law does NOT apply to charles dance in the last omen
Dan's Law can apply to all MCU films. You hire Robert Redford in a spy thriller, you bet your ass no one else's getting to be the villain.
It‘s funny but I‘m only going back to Netflix for Anime these days. I have completely lost interest in their movies and TV shows, since they are just rehashing stuff you have seen a thousand times before.

I thought it was fine, it was solidly entertaining enough for a Saturday afternoon
Dan's law applied to GOT = Sean Bean is secretly the Night King
I don't think Bryan Cranston in 2014's Godzilla follows "Dan's Law."
I love how Netflix movies have become the new straight to DVD movies.

Like if you haven't seen "Back in Action", but don't care about spoilers.
No mention of Lynch? Come on Dan, I thought you were a cinephile. His work changed my life and his passing actually made me cry.
Maybe he mentions in next charts
Watched it. Teenager daughter is spot on... Movie is so middling that crashed into the separating pillars in the middle of the highway. Mel Gibson?
I’m a big fan of Dan’s Law. I do feel the need to point out an exception (that proves the rule?). That would be Executive Decision and Steve Seagal’s character, Lt. Colonel Austin Travis. I’m not sure why I bothered mentioning the name of the character, I’m sure we all remember it so well.
Defiinitely Seagal's best role in film. Of course, some twists will be Dan's Lawbreakers.
The obvious choice for the Dad would be Michael Douglas
I really like your reviews Dan and i was hoping for one on StarWars Skeleton Crew show, but its probably too late now . I was wondering what where your thoughts about it (if you saw it that is)? I really liked it, for me its a bit like Goonies is space.

Back 2 action! Come on Dan!
So this is The Incredibles but with spies.
Dan's Law = Chekhov's Actor
My obvious kind of choice for the dad in the sequel is Antonio Bandares. My much more entertaining guess would be wildly age inappropriate Zach Galifianakis.
The sequel will just be called “In Action.”
Dan, are you gonna review the cinematic masterpiece, Grand Theft Hamlet, that came out in theaters this week? Lol
Love the Arkansas sweater! Represent.
#DansLaw 🎉 Also the #DataCorollary - if they kill off a twin in the movie, the evil one’s still alive.
9:29 Jon Voight, bam!! Welcome to the spy multiverse 🕴️🌌
Isn’t he going to be too busy being tRump’s “Hollywood Liaison” along with Mel Gibson?! Kevin Zorbo must be so mad 😂
Sounds like January movie in a nutshell
Is it a sequel to the great Billy Blanks and Roddy Pipper1994 Back in Action, that combined great stunts and food poisoning?
What’s with the Arkansas hoodie? I hope it wasn’t a lost bet.
I live in Arkansas and like to rep my home state.
I guess Cameron needed a 3rd home
Michael Douglas, of course.. Back in Action Fatal Attraction… alliteration always wins.. 😂 And the thing they look for…. A rabbit’s foot…ok, I’ll see myself out now.
This definitely looks like a movie u fold clothes to😂😂
Nice hoodie. Hopefully the basketball team can turn things around this season. 🏀🐗💯✌🏽
Timothy Dalton would be great as Diaz's father.
Please review Better Man. We finally get an original movie that’s amazing and it’s going to bomb. Please use your platform. I always enjoy your opinions.
The sequel would be Back in Action Too with Mel Gibson.
Dan, please review The Last Showgirl.
Cameron Diaz's father will be played by an AI digital clone of Bruce Willis.
Here are your seven words you LEGEND
I call this a x1.5er kinda Netflix Movie. I had fun but only because I sped through all the parts that bored me.
Jaime Foxx and Cameron Diaz (especially) were insufferable on Graham Norton last night. Film looks like pants.
355 did the samething with sebastian stan😂
I'm going with Liam Neilsen
No orphans? I'm out
Review The Brutalist
This movie is ass juice. Completely predictable and the action sequences are laughably pathetic.
