Yes, Leigh, growing onions is not easy, especially from seed. Here is how I do it, firstly, your soil must include as much washed sand as possible, no clay at all. Secondly, sow your seed on top of a thin sand topping in the same tray. Cover with a black plastic sheet or refuge bag. Your germination period should be around 48 hours. As soon as you see roots, do not touch them, place a layer of rough compost on top, and spread it thin just covering your seed. Now, the most important part, watering. Warm your water before spraying, not wetting. Only dampening every 12 hours. Yes, this may seem very tedious, but follow this method and your results will be good. Take care where you place your tray, a warm slightly shady spot, and at night cover it with a towel to keep the temperature stable.
After about four days green shoots will appear, place your seed tray in a box so you have light only from the top. This process encourages "bolting" allowing for your seedlings to lengthen in size, easier for you to transplant. After this, it is up to you to use discretion, and practice your green finger skills. For fertilizing young seedlings, I would suggest buying TDS/pH/ Temp. meter from Lazada, they are cheap. Run your mixture at 650>850 ppm per liter of water, and check your water pH reading, which should be 6.4> 6.7. Remember, onions grow best in well-drained soils. That said, good luck.

Brilliant mate. That's appreciated no end. I'll try that soon as Toon picks up another packet of seed.
Fingers crossed because we love our onions.
      Big thanks 👍

@@TLFarm That is okay Leigh, just be patient due to low morning & night temps, but follow as said & your results will be there. Try to plant the purple onions, have better results, and keep us updated on your progress so I can help if needed, Onions are always needed. Good luck with your gardening.

Aphids can be a nice sweet treat on a leaf or two of nutty bitter spinach

Onion seed very temperamental, I always buy sets here in uk, my Dad was the only one who I knew who had success growing them from seed,
your plants are Pak Choi, great in noodle soup with fish balls, coriander and garlic that the Mrs cooks,
Good sign having hover flies, we used to get a lot of aphids on the plants, but I did an experiment and grew some sacrificial plants in a corner of our garden, soon we got ladybirds, lacewings and the bluetits fed well on them also, good old mother nature, so if you get small birds visiting it could be a sign that they are looking for
    aphids,
Great vlog again, can't wait to get back to Thailand 🙏🙏🙏

      Excellent tips thanks Martin.
Toon says that Thailand has ladybird bugs but I'm still yet to see one. If we can start attracting those that'd be fantastic.
I'm going to try again with the spring onion seeds. Direct sowing super shallow in finely sieved compost this time.
Maybe I've been popping them in too deep?
We eat loads of them & they make awesome Dong so I'm eager to get it right.

Dad and Uncle used to get fine seaweed from the beach for the garden. Also have a seaweed concentrate called Seasol here for soil conditioning.

I think that's probably the same here in Thailand also Brian. I could well have to install some shade netting.

Re spring onions, I find if I spread my seed enough that when I go into Waitrose they are all just by the entrance, plus the spring onions are always close by - bonus

Companion plants are required for the onions, in the nightshade family. Peppers and tomatoes plants. They like nitrogen only until the tops are green then lower the nitrogen from a 20-20-20 to a 5-5-5.

Maybe let one of the store-bought spring-onions grow large enough to go to seed and use those seed yourself?
They might be better for your locality, with better growing quality in your area.

I'm no expert. But I remember the time in high school. We planted onions in our agriculture class. We put a lot of burned husk (the rice skin) on top soil. Our green onion grew so big. Well, we feed them with a lot of water too. I bet you that your vegetables will grow very good with burned husk. Is there a milling machine there? They used to give it away in the past because they really want to get rid of it to have room for new one.

You can wash off the aphids with fast water.
It breaks their sucking tubes and kills them. Easier and less messy than hand cleaning.
