It’s not just because of their 3-0 loss to Monaco a couple of days ago as yes they had a good preseason under Hansi Flick (in all honesty it doesn’t mean anything), they’re going to be missing a lot of key starters due to either injuries or their participation in the Olympics, and also their squad hasn’t significantly improved from last season especially since they don’t have a proper left winger or a quality defensive midfielder as there are holes in the team that has to be resolved even though they’re a much better team than what we think they are. Real Madrid are so far ahead of them right now on and off the pitch and they really need to cut the gap with this team. Ansu Fati just came back from his loan spell at Brighton, yet picked up another injury that’s going to rule him out for a significant period of time, Ronald Araujo will be out for a couple of months after he got injured on international duty, Gavi has been recovering from the ACL injury he picked up last season and he’ll probably be back in November, Pedri will be fit enough to play tomorrow’s game and will probably come off the bench, but he cannot be trusted since he’s going to end up getting injured again, Frenkie de Jong has been injured since the end of last season, he missed the EUROs and just when he’s supposed to be back for their first game of the season there’s no timeframe for his return, Fermin Lopez and Pau Cubarsi will be unavailable due to the fact that they were just playing in the Olympics. Dani Olmo their new signing won’t play tomorrow as he hasn’t been registered by La Liga and they’re going to have to sell players and get them off the wage bill for that to happen. Flick is going to have to work things out and rely on some of the academy players who did well during preseason, it should be worrying that they haven’t even kicked a ball and yet they’re still going through an injury crisis and this is an issue that hasn’t gone away with this team. I used to love watching this team. I watched just about every match from the Rjikaard era through to around the departure of Messi. They were worth watching during those years.
