Detroit Highway That DISPLACED Thriving Black Neighborhoods To Be DEMOLISHED | Roland Martin

  • From the 1950s into the 1970s, highways built in U.S. cities profoundly wounded black communities. Many of these thoroughfares were a part of the federally-funded system of highways that went through black communities displacing thriving black businesses and homes.
Now a federal grant will rectify what the construction of one of the shortest signed interstates, Detroit's I-375, did to Black neighborhoods like Black Bottom and Paradise Valley 60 years ago.
On Thursday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced a $1 million program named Reconnecting Communities for the city of Detriot for its long-awaited plan to destroy the depressed freeway. Buttigieg says to fix a problem, we have to face and accept what caused it.
The highway removal could begin as soon as 2025, two years earlier than expected, with construction finished by 2028.

Yep, Buffalo, NY. Now they are doing what is known as "Buffalo Revitalization," better known as gentrification or Urban Development. In Buffalo, the suburbs look like slums now, so it looks like they're forcing the Blacks into those areas and moving the Whites back into the city. The expressway (the 33) has served its purpose. Even a large wading pool which was a gathering place for Black families is suddenly being used as an ice skating rink. Not many Blacks ice skate in that community. I left Buffalo to go to college, came home to visit, and saw a lot of White children playing. I looked at my husband and said, "WTF." I told my little brother that we will not sell our family home because the property value will shoot up.

Speaking of the I-375 project has anyone driven down Michigan Ave and Trumble area? A new giant hotel a new apartment building, bars, shopping and banks! Ford Motor Company renovation of the old Train Station! I drive through that area every day on the way to work at MGM Grand and its stunning how much that area has changed in the past 2 or 3 years!!

A lot of my Black friends lost their property due to "heir's property". Because they could not get probate attorneys during the 1920's and 30's, mainly due to "Jim Crow". I-375 came through in 1958-59. People had to start packing up long before they started breaking ground. The bulldozers started work in 1961, by 1964 they had already started pouring concert. The I-375 finished in 1970. After money was release from the Vietnam War budget.

So what does this mean for Detroit today. Well, the White investors, like the owners of the Detroit Pistons and the Tigers, long with Ford and Mason, will buy up much of the available land..., once it comes up for sell. Very few Black investors will be able to get any of the land, because they will be priced out. Right now the local Blacks are hoping to be players in the hunt for some of the land. But my guest is that they will get 30 acres or less of any of the land. And will suffer in the road planning portion, sewage, water and power needs of their projects. As always the City will fall short in being fair to those that live in Detroit. It will all focus of a lot of dead presidents. Money.

The ILDOT received funding to rebuild Rt3 that runs directly through our town and a neighboring black populated town. They've rerouted those funds to facilitate a nearby race track. I even made a statement for court records of it's effects to these communities. Yet, to no avail. Wish I knew what to try. But it's 😢.

True that, the devil is in the details! Not every Realtor will be qualified to completely inform you of your purchasing options for your financial situation. You may have to consult with several to have a reasonable chance of acquiring enough information to make the playing field level and you should understand exactly how you stand before you begin to actively tour potential homes for your family. Adjustable-rate loans can work if you are disciplined and plan ahead for the inevitable increase in the mortgage payment amount.
