I guess this is sedimentary rock, but I don't think I've ever seen (in person) one with such a clean dividing like between the colours. When I saw it, I knew I had to make something interesting from it. I used a variety of carbide drill bits to make the hole, ending with 3/4" diameter that fits my ring finger. I then did the rough cutting with a diamond blade in my angle grinder and the final shaping on my belt grinder using silicon carbide belts. The last step was to dunk it in polyurethane to let that soak in and help stabilise the fairly delicate sand stone. Even though I don't think I'll actually wear this ring, it was a fun challenge to make it, and I may find another use for the rest of the rock for an future project. therealnightwriter I just checked all available news sources and police scanners in Canada. So far there is no indication that someone here has reported a stolen (or missing) sedimentary rock.
Awesome grinder skills, John! The colouring in the stone looks like it might contain iron. Seems the perfect thing to form a ring out of :) Cool project
As you were sticking your finger through for the test fit, I had the horror flash thought. OMG he is going to get his finger stuck.. PHEW. You live to video another day ;0 Thanks for the entertainment John.
Dude, that is flippin' beautiful! You could probably go into business making them to order. I'd buy one. Thanks for the video. Hell I got so wrapped up in the ring I didn't mention the quality of the video itself. Great bit of editing and clever use of coolant delivery.
John I bet it would have really been a stunning ring if you had polished it in a rock tumbler. Looks great though. Love your imagination and inventiveness. You make great vids keep up the great work.
Grand kids have a rock tumbler. Three or four days of tumbling rocks and they looked the same at the end as when they started, lol. Good thing the tumbler was in a closet or I would have gone crazier.
I agree with the others; that water bottle was a neat simple trick! I wonder if CA glue or a runny epoxy would also soak in and work to strengthen it? Hmm, no sedimentary rock in my back yard to try... :-)
In high school metal shop I made a titanium ring from the landing gear of an F16 fighter plane. Our teacher was friends with a mechanic from Grumman and provided the titanium from the scrap bins. I won an ward for it and had it for years until it was stolen from my car. The ring had a similar shape to yours. I imagine that yours is a lot harder :)
Absolutely loved this video. I especially love your bottle of water with the pinhole to keep your drill bits cool, I need to drill through about a half inch of steel do you think your bottle of water gimmick would work for me?
hey john i wonder if it would be possible to polish that rock like you could do it with marble or granite? that might look really cool too, even though i'd imagine it beeing a whole lot of extra work
That really is great videography John. The rock is interesting and your skills shined when you turned it into a ring. Wear it for your next street fight or just to knock some sense into that troll.

Did the angle grinder really cut it that fast, like butter?
Yes, all of the clips in this video are at normal speed.
wOw! may I ask why diamond blade that is?

Iron, Amber, Wood and Bone.
Congratulations, Re'lar! You have mastered the Name of Stone.
John I bet it would have really been a stunning ring if you had polished it in a rock tumbler. Looks great though. Love your imagination and inventiveness. You make great vids keep up the great work.
the small hole at the bottom of the water bottle was a great idea.
You could finish in a rock tumbler. Smooth and polish it. Very cool.

Very cool John!! 👍 Ron, Littlewierdshop

Even more impressive.

traderjoes Fascinating anecdotes like yours always make the Comments Section worthwhile reading.
Cool project, thanks for sharing. You might want to consider getting a patent for your automatic cooling system though ;)
Absolutely loved this video. I especially love your bottle of water with the pinhole to keep your drill bits cool, I need to drill through about a half inch of steel do you think your bottle of water gimmick would work for me?
It`s a very soft rock indeed.
Really cool.

Prehistoric drill bit torture :D
Looks heavy!
stone is the new wood

How long did ot take you to make it
