So True! I must admit that I've always been into Bonham. I may be a bit late, but I realize the amazing talent of Mitch Mitchell! A true inspiration indeed
Shit, he's an inspiration to me and I'm an old drummer haha. His flawless playing of the accented 16th note triplet fills in Hey joe is INSANE. Amazing drummer
Even among drummers, he's under-appreciated. IMO a LOT better than many drummers from the same era who get more credit than they deserve (looking your way, Ginger Baker).
He wasnt the fastest nor did he have the heaviest sound ever, but what always impressed me and why he is my fav is his incredible creativeness being able to combine the soul of the blues and the intensity and power of rock perfectly matching Jimis blended sound of blues and rock while being able to incorporate his jazz background to add in fills during Jimi's leads and solos keeping the drums from becoming stale and repetitive and still ablento keep perfect rhythm never missing a note and being completely on time to bring it all back together right back to the standard beat
I've loved Mitch Mitchell since the 1960's.I met him in 2008 after the Hendrix tribute show at the Beacon Theater in New York City. I asked him .."did Hendrix ever tell you what to play or what not to play?" Mitch replied.."no,he let me make of fool of myself just Iike I did tonight!" Which means that even though he got a standing ovation when he came out on stage Mitch seemed to be drunk or high and couldn't really play,he had to be lead off of the drum riser after trying to play with the S.R.V.rhythm section.. Oh well, it was great to meet him, have him sign my program and thank him for all his great drumming with Hendrix. One of Mitch's biggest influences was Elvin Jones and Miles Davis and Tony Williams use to go see Hendrix play. When I spoke to Mitch he said that he still had a Gretsch drum set Tony gave him and cymbals Art Blakey gave him too. R.I.P. MITCH MITCHELL
Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, John Densmore, Michael Shrieve, Michael Giles, Charlie Watts, and Ginger Baker were all mixing jazz with rock drumming during that time. I think Mitchell Mitchell was the one who most overtly displayed his jazz influence on the Are You Experienced album, which blew the doors wide open for everyone else to follow.
Really a jazz drummer in hippie duds. His rudiments and articulation are out of this world. Equally as fantastic a rock drummer as Bonham, Bruford, Carter Beauford, et al
@@chickentwisties2298 I have no clue why I would ever comment something so ignorant Buford is probably better than Bonham but they’ve got very different styles.
Mitch, while not one of my favorite drummers, I can’t deny his absolute banger of a solo and his rudimentary skills along with the feel that he keeps with it. Bravo Mitch Mitchell, Bravo!
One of my top 5 drummers of all time.....I LOVE the way he played. I don't know whether he was really unappreciated or underrated or whatever people say....I just know I LOVE listening to him.
I was able to see Buddy and that band of his 13 times here in the Twin Cities. Been 50 years and I still cant believe my eyes and ears. He taught us all how to play.
I’m appreciating the openness the group had to allow for drum solos- a tradition that lives in jazz to be welcomed within their experiment. Jimi’s hammering and feedback blends incredibly with the drums as launches into the next song…but it reminds us that these were men who loved to play and listened well.
He’s bad ass isn’t he! I’m sure Mitch would say Buddy Rich or Gene were better but as a rock drummer Mitch is King Kong. Did you notice the John Bonham triplets (fast part in Moby Dick) there? He was doing it before Bonham made it famous. Mitch is a beast
This is a bebop-influenced solo, there's no trace of Rich's snare drilling here. Max Roach's influence is evident on the melody and space he leaves between the notes and his ride cymbal work is in the vein of Elvin Jones.
He was great!! But,he nor anyone will EVER match Buddy Rich!! Rest in peace Mitch and Buddy. Two of my huge influences in my drumming! Sandy Hanson,Agent Orange.
Look at how the dude with a left-hand guitar looks at him and knows he's in the presence of a legend. I don't know who the guitarist was, but Mitch was a beast 😉
gy4b70 There aren't many who thinks Mitch is better than Bonzo especially the numerous drummer polls where Bonzo is either #1 or top 3. That doesn't take away from Mitchell's great chops.

Mitch was the best rock drummer of his time.. Better than all his peers, Bonham, Baker, Watts, (who always claimed he was a "jazz drummer" , was a fucking shmo who did NOT know how to play jazz ) and Moon, were all inferior to Mitchell's technique, finesse, power, and accuracy.. Baker was a delusional egomaniac, Bonzo, although had some great chops and execution, was limited, and Moon.....Well, Moon was nothing short of an orangutan having an epileptic seizure.. Sorry if i've offended anyone, but that's the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts. I respect all drummers for what they've individually contributed to rock music history, but that's the way it is.. Mitchell was the man, case closed.
Rhythmista Agree Mitchell is ahead of every one except Bonzo. That man is a monster. He pioneered so many things that it's almost ridiculous. Mitchell is a beast tho
This show isn't his best drumming, he sounds pretty tired. Listen to Hear My Train A Comin from the Berkeley concert. That's some of his peak drumming there.

Hendrix songs like Voodoo, Fire, Foxy, Purple Haze, Crosstown Traffic wouldn't be nearly as good without Mitch
Noel Redding is worse. At least some people knows Mitch from:
-Drum Talent
-Yer Blues
-Overshadowed by Jimi Hendrix
Random Slayer Fan Boi Noel Redding sucked tho

Yes.
Love how at 1:39 Jimi is like "The fuck is on my guitar??" while Mitch is going crazy.
Stewart Copeland once said "Jimi Hendrix was Mitch's guitarist" very true.
my fav drummer ever... so under rated and appreciated! genious level drums
I could be wrong, but wasn't Mitch one of the first drummers to incorporate Jazz drumming with Rock music? Mitch is a beast on the skins!!
Ginger Baker too
Def not the first, but Bill Ward from Black Sabbath definitely had some jazz influences imo
Ian Paice, Bill Bruford, John Densmore, Michael Shrieve, Michael Giles, Charlie Watts, and Ginger Baker were all mixing jazz with rock drumming during that time. Jimi loved Mitch ❤ knew exactly when to bring him back 😀
From jazz - Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Bill Ward, Ian Paice etc etc.
Amazing talent
You can tell Mitch Mitchell was a fan of Buddy Rich by his style and technique.
His style has nothing to do with Buddy. His licks are clearly influenced by Elvin Jones and Max Roach.
i think he sounds more like buddy rich than the other two
This is a bebop-influenced solo, there's no trace of Rich's snare drilling here. Max Roach's influence is evident on the melody and space he leaves between the notes and his ride cymbal work is in the vein of Elvin Jones.
Roberto Ricci Definitely agree. Elvin comes to mind when I hear his phrasing. Way more tasteful than Buddy, in my opinion.
more like Max Roach. he kinda sounds like bonham though, the way he hits those triplets but that's probably cause of the kit
He was great!! But,he nor anyone will EVER match Buddy Rich!! Rest in peace Mitch and Buddy. Two of my huge influences in my drumming! Sandy Hanson,Agent Orange.
