Comic Book Moves were in its prime from the start of Batman Begins up until Spider-Man No Way Home. Since then, there has been a rapid decline. Is it over? Or can it bounce back? Who has had the better run over the last few months? DC? Marvel? Will James Gunn fix DC? Will Feige drop some stuff of his plate and get Marvel back to its glory days? John Rocha joins Kristian Harloff on this episode of Big Thing Capes and Cowls edition.

I think Rocha is right on the money with Marvel right now. They tried to hire young writers with little experience to basically create an in-house writing staff. Which was such a dumb idea and was clearly just done to save money. I still think they can correct course especially with all the news about slowing down and hiring experienced writers on Blade, Fantastic 4, Thunderbolts, etc

Where Gadot is concerned: back when Jenkins had parted ways with them, Gunn responded to someone (on Twitter) who said they'd let Cavill and her go by saying, "Who said we were getting rid of Gal?" Granted that was awhile ago, but that's the last thing to come from him about it. If anything I think him not shooting the news of her staying down on Threads or Twitter like he's so quick to shoot everything else that's not true down means there's truth in there somewhere.

Fantastic conversation with two greats! So many topics I have questions about. 1) Did Steph say personally on Sith Council she didn’t want to review Ahsoka because of the strike? If so, I must’ve missed it. Don’t do other socials. SAG really needed to clear up some confusion on this matter. Obviously taking money from an AMPTP signee is bad but the lack of clarity is annoying. 2) Before Gunn was fired he was going to be be head of the ‘Cosmic MCU’ under Feige. Once Alan Horn fired Gunn a lifeline for Kevin was gone and we got Phase 4-5. Curious how different it would have looked if Gunn stayed at Marvel.

Interesting takes on Batman Begins. That was my favorite of the trilogy for years, until I went back recently and watched Dark Knight again. DK hit a little different with some time and distance from just how much I loved the first movie, and now it's maybe my favorite... but it's close.
I can't even fathom anyone thinking Begins is a bad movie -- he may as well be speaking a language from another galaxy. You not only get to see Bruce as a kid, but as a young adult struggling to find his way, and then his training arc, wrestling with how to balance his two lives, not to mention Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson as antagonists. It hasn't aged a bit (whereas Batman 89 is fairly creaky).

I respect and admire Rocha as a man of integrity and strong human values. When something offends his sensibilities, he comes out (metaphorically) swinging. I surely understand Kristian's point on wasting energy on the various social media platforms. After a while it feels like boxing Jello. You come out frustrated and exhausted, and Jello is still Jello. That being said, sometimes it becomes impossible to let a morally repugnant statement stand unchallenged. Keep on keeping on Outlaw !!!

Great show guys, love to see the homie Rocha popping up anywhere.
I've come to disagree with Kristian's stance that the average filmgoer is not in-the-know enough to be impacted by the behind the scenes stuff. I think this used to be true, and was 100% the case pre-2000, but the modern average filmgoer has been skewing younger for the last two decades and Covid exacerbated that process.
Movio has done a few really interesting pieces on this, speaking with marketing executives in the film industry about demographics and one thing that's interesting is that the average age of pre-sales moviegoers has gone down significantly, from men in the range of 25 to 54 to a majority that is younger, aged 12 to 34 and this is largely because that older demo never came back from Covid. The main demographic that is driving ticket sales is an always online demographic that has grown up with social media now. So when Kristian says "My mom/uncle doesn't know who these people are" I don't think that matters because they don't create the majority of the audience.
I heard so much early this year that The Flash would do great because no none was aware of the behind the scenes drama because we live in a bubble, that movies historic flop is either because Ezra was on a crime spree or because the announcement of the death of the DCEU has ripped the interest from the public. Both of those explanations require that filmgoers at-large be aware of the behind the scenes stuff. Watching DC crash immediately after announcing that the films were no longer going to be kept in continuity and still thinking casual fans aren't aware of what's happening on social media seems largely incorrect to me.

    • @Vulcanerd
      @Vulcanerd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

To be fair, DC hasn’t had a film that’s done more than $400m worldwide in 5 years. Remember, Shazam 2 crashed hard and BB is struggling despite decent reviews overall.
I think people are just disengaged from DCEU.

Odds are Superman Legacy will be pushed back to 2026, due to the work stoppage. So there will be more room to breathe between Aquaman 2 and Gunns Superman. Maybe thats the space needed for the public to forget about the current DC struggles and a clean slate with Gunn and Co. Thanks for another great show, and its great seeing Rocha here! Always enjoy his takes on the industry.

James Gunn also said that The Dark Knight is not classic. He didn't want Affleck nor Cavill back. Then he change The Flash ending and took Keaton an Calle out of it. Even I tried to defend him in the past but you can't blame the people if the studio keeps messing with their favorite IPs.

Quality wise dc overall has been better than the mcu since endgame. The Batman is a top 20 comic book film for me and the suicide squad and peacemaker are both great and I love the first Shazam.

When you throw in DC animation. DC has outclassed marvel since endgame when it comes to overall quality.

Multiverse of Madness is a fascinating continuation to WandaVision. MoM is a perfect payoff to Agatha's cryptic warnings about the Scarlet Witch prophesy.
Wanda acts very similar to Agatha in MoM, which is something that I don't see anyone talking about for some reason. They both stalk an inexperienced yet formidable young woman with immense powers and feel deserving of that power. Now that Wanda has realized her mistakes, she will understand why Agatha acted the way she did and they can become besties again.
With this in mind, it's clear that Wanda learned a different lesson in MoM. She accepted the loss of Vision in WandaVision but still hadn't processed the loss of her children. The Darkhold enhanced her desire for some semblance of the happy life she experienced in Westview as an isolated fugitive between the two projects.
At the end of WandaVision, Monica says, "They'll never know what you sacrificed for them," which is a reasonable thing to say as someone who feels empathy for Wanda and a connection through similar experiences of grief. Wanda responds, "It wouldn't change how they see me." This shows that even though she feels remorse for her actions, she still feels vilified by the world and embraces it in MoM. Wanda goes on a quest to understand her powers, but in doing so, she inadvertently becomes the woman she was destined to be and goes on a quest for someone else's powers.
It was a perfect storm of all of these things happening at once, and it all goes back to Agatha, who indirectly mentored Wanda into becoming a power-hungry villain. A beautifully tragic story is told through these two projects, and WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness are great companion pieces, in my opinion.

They started writing the script for MoM before Wandavision even finished, and Sam Raimi admitted to never having watched the show. Fans can make connections and see a progression of the Wandavision story, but that isn’t built into the story of MoM.

@alexp601 It's all there if people would just look a little deeper. I just think people simplify it and say it's bad writing just because Wanda has a similar character journey and because she turns evil. The story is much more complex and intricate than that. She's so blinded by her grief that she even murders Monica's mother in an alternate universe, whose death in our universe was the reason why Monica felt empathy for Wanda and helped her in the first place. By the time Wanda is kneeling in front of her alternate self in her complete corrupted get-up at the end of MoM, Wanda's journey feels earned. She relapsed in MoM, and it was the most compelling way to move forward with the character. I'm just looking at the bigger picture, and I feel like this film is going to age really well in the future.

I agree that Batman 89 is outdated but it's still good movie. Prince soundtrack still great. All movies in 80s were campy wasn't until The Crow that darkness was put into Batman. Nolan Batman Begins side by side looks like the Crow.. even Joker looks like Brandon Lee

Thank you for giving Man of Steel the credit it deserves! People way oversell the “it wasn’t a financial hit” rhetoric. That’s absolutely not true. It made darn good money. 👍
