I'm not even a legit fan of Lana (I really like her music and vibes tho) but I can really notice the difference in her demeanor. she used to seem so sad and talk so slow in her interviews from just a year or two back. now she's so engaged in the conversation, it's really refreshing to see her smile and laugh so much.

Lana del Rey's exploration of hip hop isn't considered cultural appropriation in the same way that katy Perry and Miley Cyrus were because she is not trying to use black culture or black ppl as props or as an "edgy" fad. She generally enjoys their sound and doesn't compromise changing her own sound to cater to a certain demographic, but instead blends the two and result is great. Love lana

I'm a big rap listener and I really think Lana got some hip hop vibes . She sings like many rappers ram, I mean by her flow's rythm and Melody. For example the beginning from 'Videogames' really show a rapper flow with the 'swinnin in the backyard / pull up in ur fastcar' so she's already kind of in hip hop culture

Being a Black woman I do have a problem with cultural appropriation, but I see it as someone using others style to gain a profit. That's why I don't like Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus anymore. Hip-hop was never true to who they were. They just used the sound, and features of artist to get more views and money. I FUCKING HATE THAT SHIT. Lana is not that. Like she said she's about the music. I don't know why, but this video reminded me of an MTV interview of Lana from 2012. Her jacket, makeup and hair look similar. She is still the same girl as she was then, but she has become happier. Cause they are friends and she wanted them in her album, she also collab with Sean & Stevie and wants to collab with Marina who are all white... but who cares M I rite?

i think she wore the headress because she thought it was really unique and beautiful. which would be more of an appreciation, given the fact she was also chilling with bikers who usually have mad respect for natives. i didnt see it as anything bad. :)

When an artist creates a persona they are extending their art, how is it not authentic? Artistic personas almost drove David Bowie and Alice Cooper literally insane.
Authenticity in art is just making up bullshit that doesnt feel like other people made up bullshit. I think shes smart and her music is beautiful.
Shes genius because she created something that feels like it has existed for a long time but it never actually existed until she made Lana Del Ray to purposefully project that americana cenematic feel, and Lana Del Ray seems like an artistic variation of herself (Elizabeth Grant) and not quite a persona really.

Theres a difference between sharing and taking and pretending its the product of your own culture. Cultural appropriation is a concept that attempts to address power imbalances between different ethnicities - granted, sometimes it is taken too far but in most cases I think its fair.
Rock music is a great example of cultural appropriation - its an art form that originated in African American communities and was essentially taken by white people and expressed as though it was their own invention.

Keep in mind that rock is a river composed of many streams, as Alan Freed put it. Some of those streams are "whiter", such as country, folk, and pre-rock pop. This diversity, of course, is a good thing.

No you just create a song in a style you like and if the song goes viral and people say you are a staple in certain genre you just become the symbol of that genre. Lana is very unique and versatile in her art, so to minimize her discography by constantly bringing up a few hip hop elements, and essentially act as if she is solely influenced by only the hip hop and rap genre is not only inaccurate, but it's dismissive and disrespectful of all the versatility in Lana's creativity as an artist.. My point is, Lana is not a culture vulture, she doesn't rip off of anyone's music, and she incorporates her own unique flare to her lyrics, melodies and instrumentals. She has a beautiful habit of blending at least 2 genres together with poetic, true-to-herself lyrics. She has always showed her appreciation of anyone and anything that inspired her. Even the fans appreciate hip hop culture and all of the influences who have inspired Lana to create. She is fine and has been fine, the actual offense they were referring to was when she wore the native american head piece in a music video. Other than this mistake, she is non problematic and a kind soul. I think her first 2 albums, Born to Die and Paradise, are the ones people are mainly referring to when talking about the hip hop element. Because her unreleased music, and all of her other albums are heavily influenced by pop, rock, jazz, so much more than only hip hop. I'm glad so many people can appreciate Lana for her unique style and blend of different genres.
Only Lana can pull off 40s hair and an adidas tracksuit and make it seem natural.
